"1. The old icons were no longer up to date; many actions did not have an (appropriate) icon."
Icons dont degrade ( unless the supported format changes) so the "up to date' is a 'change to a new (icon) fashion' and rather than add an appropriate icon you made an entire new (worse) icon set. Very good. (Note it's worse because smaller, low contrast and no color)
"2. They were not adapted to high resolution displays (and the pie menu looked awful on those)." Presumably the new ones are now adapted to high resolution displays but now look like uncontrasted random scribble everywhere (else) - also excellent
"3. Their sources were not available, so I could not update them."
Because of course the only way to update *icons* is from their source.
"4. Their license was unknown." But historically released and freely available with this use .
"If you provide me with a new set of icons satisfying the above requirements, I might consider providing an option to use them."
Rather than just providing an option to use the original icons where they might make more sense to do so...
Conversely if you provide an option to use the old icons I might consider continuing to use this add-on. Otherwise I guess a downgrade and update halt is in order - the latest update has nothing i need or desire and actually makes the usability, recognition and functionality of the add-on worse rather than better...
Trying to open options from the menu opens a blank tab, and trying to open it from the addons menu opens the horozontal slit window.
Addendum: Not sure what version I upgraded from. There's no error messages concerning the addon in the console. I'm using Win7 SP1 _______________________________________________
Yes, there are a lot of keys starting with extenstions.easygestures; too many to list.
Addendum; I'm using Win 7, and the 64 bit version of Firefox. Uninstalling and reinstalling didn't do anything
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I uninstalled EasyGestures, and deleted all the preferences starting with "extensions.easygesture", and reinstalled. There are no entries with that suffix in about:config anymore, but I still have the same problem; ring menu doesn't open, and opening options just opens a blank tab.
Are you sure you tested it with 64bit Firefox 50.1?
From which version of the extension did you upgrade to v5.2? Are there any error messages being displayed on the console? Which platform are you using? Thanks.
Addendum: OK. I still cannot reproduce the problem. In about:config, are there any keys starting with "extensions.easygestures"?
Addendum 2: I have upgraded from v5.1 to v5.2 on a Win10 machine with Firefox 54, and I experienced no problem. Does your problem persist after uninstalling and reinstalling the extension?
The presence of preference keys starting with "extensions.easygestures" is a clear sign that something went wrong during the upgrade procedure (as from v5.2 there shouldn't be any such keys in about:config anymore). I would try to uninstall the extension and manually delete all these keys starting with "extensions.easygestures" (alternatively, you can downgrade to v5.1 and then uninstall that version of the extension). At this point, if you search "easygestures" in about:config no item should be returned. Is that so? If yes, I would expect that installing v5.2 solves the problem. If not, which keys contain still that term?
Do I understand correctly that no horizontal slit window is shown anymore and that a blank tab is shown instead when opening options? That represents some progress...
I am currently using the 64-bit versions of Firefox 55 and 56, and the extension runs without problems.
BTW, which version of Firefox are you actually using. Version 5.2 of easyGestures is incompatible with Firefox 50.1!
Great to read that you got it to work! Indeed, the pie menu cannot be opened on addons.mozilla.org. This is a limitation of WebExtensions.
I still used the old easyGestures (as the "only open when dragging" option isn't available for that fork) but using FF52 this is not anylonger (even considerung workarounds as before) possible. So now I'm forced to switch to easyGestures N - which is thankfully available. But I had experienced one problem: The pie menu was opening but activating wasn't possible - nothing had happens when either activation-button was not held anymore or left-mouse-button was clicked when menu is shown. After I have reset the preferences it worked - I think it was caused due to either 'Activate contextual menu' with none of these keys and automatically or using the same mouse button for displaying the alternative menu (after these two changes it is now working correctly). Many thanks!
Perhaps the problem you encountered was due to a conflict with the preferences of the original easyGestures extension (although these should have been removed when uninstalling the extension) or to an issue while upgrading to easyGestures N (version 5.1 only supports upgrading from version 4.8 onward)? In any case, great to read that you could fix it.
I love this Addon and it is good that in newer Firefox run :) But can you build in this addon that the menu first open when the mouse a little bit move, like the older addon. I have it with right click and with the context menu it is not very good. Thanks :)
I removed long time ago the "open only when dragging" feature because it was buggy and I saw at that time little value in trying to fix it. I might though reconsider my decision in the future, once the extension reaches again a more complete state.
In the meantime, I suggest you to use the "prevent pie menu from opening with key" feature to let the context menu appear in place of the pie menu.
Thank you very much for putting this very handy extension back to live, i.e, for having it working again with recent releases of Firefox. AFAIK there's nothing comparable for other browsers, e.g. like Chrome or Opera.
There's another Firefox extension called "CompassMenu", but it lacks both functionality and configurability, as mentioned in the according rating text.
Also it's great providing the source code of easyGestures N on GitHub, as this allows the maintenance of this gem. But don't prune too much of the existing features as mentioned in the README file, because IMO most of them are well designed and useful ;-)
Finally! This is my #1 favorite time-saving firefox extension, and someone finally got it working again. Thanks!
This is the best mouse-gestures extension because you don't have to memorize complicated patterns, you just middle-click-drag in any direction and the popup icons help you remember what each direction does. It's so quick and easy, once you use it enough (and customize it with actions you frequently use), you won't want to live without it.
Tip: If you have any trouble with it not showing up, or with autoscroll conflicts, go into the normal firefox options and disable autoscrolling (not in the easygestures options). [Firefox Options > Advanced > General > Browsing > "Use autoscrolling".]
