Why was Easy Whitelist created?

The idea come to me while helping my children with homework on the computer. I observed that it was hard for them to focus on the task at hand when their "time-waster" websites were so easily accessible. I wanted a very easy way to make the websites my children need to access (for homework, etc) available for their use while shielding them from inappropriate or "time waster" websites during homework time.

Easy White List is the result! My primary goal was to have the ability to simply "record" the desirable websites to the white list and simply click a button to turn off recording. It is possible to manually add websites to the white list but who wants to do that?

My children use a Mac so I set up Parental Controls to block access to other browsers so only Firefox can be used.

What's next for Easy Whitelist

Following is a list of features I'd like to add as time permits:
- Allow multiple white lists to be defined. Allow a white list to be enabled for different times of day. A white list for morning hours, a different for afternoon hours and yet another for evening.
- Add a website logging option. Allow all websites to be accessed but simply log the website and time the site was accessed.
- Add the option to have website logs emailed to a configurable list of contacts.

I'd love to hear your great ideas as well!

Who is Karl Bunnell?

I code during the day as part of my profession and I code in the evenings as one of my hobbies.

My interest in writing software began when I was in the 9th grade. My Dad purchased an Apple IIe and I would spend hours typing in games (or anything I could find) from the back of BYTE magazine. Since then I've learned many programming languages for a variety of platforms (Windows, Linux, Unix, NetWare, Mac OSx, iPhone, Android ...).

My first Add-On for Firefox is "Easy Whitelist". A simply way to protect children from encountering bad sites on the internet by configuring a "whitelist" of accepted websites.
