I just tried this in UX Nightly (version 24.0a1), and it works! I tried changing "browser.tabs.tabMaxWidth" all the way up to 500 prior to installing Custom Tab Width, but only Custom Tab Width makes it work! Nice.
I didn't need this until the UX Nightly build. In Firefox 21, my setting in about:config was still working. Well done, Dao Gottwald!
Works like a charm on FF21. Does everything it says beautifully.
Consistently crashes and locks up FF20 on vanilla win7 installation when hitting "options"
Absolutely necessary. Should be a standard feature.
Works fine with F18
The extension DOES work in 15.0.1 and in 15.0.1 it does remember the settings from session to session.
This extension does not work on Firefox 14.0.1. The options are set to a minimum width of 1 and a max width of 10. If you change these, they switch back to the original values, and the extension does nothing, i.e., the tab width behaviour stays the same, with tabs scrolling off to the right, instead of shrinking in size.
This used to be so easy with a couple of parameters set in about:config. Then some genius at Mozilla decided that this feature was not required by users. I hate tabs scrolling off to the side.
Please, someone, give us a way of shrinking tab widths, instead of scrolling.
works great, till the latest update to FF.
since then it keeps forgetting the settings every time i restart the browser. still, works while in session, i can live with that. hopefully an update will come...
Brilliant in its simplicity. Just what I needed since I always seem to have a lot of tabs open and will be especially useful when I am working on a small screen. This definitely increased the speed with which I browse. I only wish I had found it sooner. I left the max alone and went for 45 for the min just to give people an idea of a rough value.
Middleclick opens the tab scroll buttons, even though it doesn't scroll much. Small bug, but still annoyance.
Absolutely fantastic, exactly what I needed. I have many tabs open and this changes them to a more sensible size.
Since I keep a lot of tabs open at the same time, I like them to be fairly short -- and this is the only add-on I was able to find that could simply and quickly let me do that. Works perfectly on my XP, with FF 9
very nice addon, i really like it!
would be great if you could allow max tab width values much greater than 1000, at the moment i always patch it by hand and set it to 9999 because i need much bigger tabs.
I've been so annoyed after Mozilla removed the option to remove the stupid tab scrolling from the "about:config" settings in Firefox 9.
This tab exactly what I needed > set custom min width so the annoying scrolling goes away! Easy, simple, user friendly - thank you!
At first I thought this was a good idea, but the problem is you lose sight of the Close button and therefore have to CTRL+W, or right click and then Close Tab to exit after loading the site. It would be much more convenient to be able to close the tab while viewing a different site.
I always thought narrower tabs looks better, like chrome or opera. this add-on is exactly what I want. the only minor problem is that I can not type a specific value in the max width column
Is it possible to make this extension also adjust tab height.
The addon appears to work well in the replacement of this much needed and deleted funcionality.
On other note, aren't you obligated by the license of your own choosing (mpl) to release the source code with the respective addon? That would be much appreciated.
Thanks for doing that.
I just unlocked the source. You may find it here: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/files/browse/98067/
Simple yet must-have functionality! Don't know why FF removed minTabWidth config and don't want a heavy weight solution like TMP to do this. This addon's perfect!
I would have installed in expectance that it would use less memory than Tab Utilities, but this addon doesn't work with Firefox 8.0a1. Removing the about:config variable was a really bad decision by Dao. He is disliked by many due to that illogical decision. :(
Very useful extension! Thank you and please keep up the good work. :-)
I'm going to switch to F7 soon - hopefully it will remain compatible.
I participated in the discussion cited by thenonhacker, and disagree with the decision taken there. However, I view it as a Mozilla-level decision to break this functionality and not go to the bother of fixing it. If Mozilla were more responsive to the demands of its users, this would have been fixed before Fx 5.
As the dev directly responsible, Gottwald went above the call of duty by making this add-on. Anyway, rate the extension (which is obviously useful) not the developer.
Dão Gottwald, the creator of this add-on, apparently is the same person responsible for the removal of "about:config" settings that let you customize tab widths. See for yourself: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=574654
Apparently, it's a very bad decision. We now need plugins for each about:config option removed. I am now reconsidering moving to Chome.
"Anyway fortunately the creator of this add did what should have done Moz Fx4 developers, so thanks again !"
Everyone should know that "the creator of this add(on)" is THE Firefox 4 developer that eliminated the about:config capability.
I like the add-on, but I wish it wouldn't stop Browser.tabs.closeButtons from working properly.
