  • Works great, is lightweight and does exactly what it should be doing. If only it got and update to be compatible with version 57.

  • Is it possible make it 57+ compatible?

  • perhaps also copy Title AND Link? :)

  • this add-on seems to break the context menu when I right click on images.. I restarted in safe mode confirmed the context menu returned. Then installed each add-on one by one and this one was the culprit.. FF 49.0.1
!! I really like this add-on can you look into this? Thanks!

  • Solves a major annoyance that link text cannot be highlighted like other text on a webpage. I use it for copying the short commit hashes from GitHub commit history.

  • So far, it works as advertised!

  • Now I can copy the names of the YouTube videos in the right hand column, as easily as their URL. Or anywhere where the link extends beyond the text itself so it's difficult to get it high-lighted (as is very common in drop-downs).

Also you can copy the "real" link from Twitter, instead of the t.co-shortcode.

Request: I'd like to be able to copy the alt-tag (or tooltip text), as in some cases this is where the real link is shown.

..."other form controls to get their text or values" - values? Why not put up some more screenshots, of e.g. that.

The contex menu item "Copy Link Text" ends up at the bottom of the context meny, instead of just below "Copy Link Location", which would be preferable. New screenshot? (tips on moving?)

    Developer response

Thanks for the feedback... Good suggestions as far as screenshots...I will see about putting some new/additional ones up...

The add-on already automatically adds a "Copy Image alt text" menu item when available.

It is possible for developers to implement tooltips without the alt attribute (for images) or title attribute (for other elements) but in those cases I really can't reliably detect how they happen to have done it and therefore I can't retrieve it.

There is an option to "Show alt attribute text" too, but most people will probably not want this feature, as it will cause the "Copy Link Text" menu item to append alt text in this manner: If the text is "CNN with alt image" and the alt is "This is CNN", it will copy this to the clipboard as such: "CNN with alt image; alts: This is CNN!".

As far as "form control values", this is probably something mostly of interest to programmers. In a pull-down of say U.S. states when submitting a form, an item's text might show up as "Illinois", but the internal value might be "IL", but you wouldn't see "IL" on the page. The only way the average user might see this value (without using developer tools) is if the form that it is within is of the "GET" type, meaning that the form values, when submitted, will show up in the URL, e.g., as "http://example.com?state=IL" or say "http://example.com?country=US&state=IL". When you enable Copy Link Text's form controls option and right click a button or form control (including password fields if you enable that particular feature), you can either get the text showing on the control or its value (unless the app has its own context menu in which case Firefox won't show its own context menu including CopyLinkText).

As far as the position of the menu item, I am using the recommended way to implement Firefox add-ons which currently does not allow designating IDs (by which a menu editing add-on such as "Menu Wizard" or "Menu Editor" could reliably move it for you). If you want this fixed, you could add your vote, cc email, and/or comments at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=956461 where it has been requested of Firefox.

UPDATE: Menu Wizard 4.01 has apparently added an ability to assign IDs where they don't exist (and thus to control the placement of menu items like Copy Link Text).

  • We try to use these add-ons to save a little time not to put extra time tweaking and searching on how to make them work.

  • It wasn't working for me in Firefox 42.0, but that was probably due to some obscure about:config tweak that I did. I just finished reinstalling Firefox and all my extensions, tweaking, etc. from scratch and it works fine now. IMO this extension should have been incorporated into Firefox a long time ago. My thanks to the author both for the extension and for his patience with me as I struggled to figure out the problem I was having with it. It works fine now.

There is a known issue with a conflict with other menu editing add-ons. The problem is that those add-ons need an ID to find the menu item, but the Firefox SDK (which is what the later versions of my add-on are built with and which is the recommended approach for add-ons) does not provide the option to add an ID. This bug is at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=956461 . If that is not your issue, I'm not sure what the problem could be as it is working for me in FF 42 and 43.

  • Simple and it works.

  • Works fine in Firefox 40, but it can't be moved from the bottom of the context menu to a more appropriate position. How annoying! I tried using both Menu Manipulator and Menu Wizard, but the menu entry will not move.

    Developer response

    Hi,

My add-on is using the recommended approach for add-ons, the Firefox SDK which provides the ability for restartless install. Those menu editing programs are supposed to rely on IDs but the SDK does not currently allow adding IDs. If you want to see this implemented, you might vote on the bug at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=956461 . In the meantime, you can go back to version Version 1.5.3.1-signed , click on Copy Link Text 's options in about:addons, and set "Automatic Updates" for to "off". This older version did not use the SDK, so it can work with those menu editing programs.

  • Very usefull, but doesn't working any more.

    Developer response

I am trying to take advantage of the Firefox SDK to give restartless install ability, and that has apparently caused some problems in older versions of Firefox. You may have to reinstall the last working version (probably 1.6.3.1) and disable updates for now on this add-on until you can use a more up-to-date version of Firefox. Or it could be interference with another add-on. See https://github.com/brettz9/copylinktext/issues/7#issuecomment-124872858

  • I checked on Firefox 38 without add-ons.
    Please update

    Developer response

I'm sorry, but it is working for me. The last thing I might check is your particular CopyLinkText setting configuration. Feel free to report issues at https://github.com/brettz9/copylinktext/issues/ (or email).

UPDATE: I have rebuilt in a manner that now may (only) work in FF 38.

  • This should be an in-built feature of Firefox.

  • Though is't a great essential addon it stopped working in FF35.0.

    Developer response

Are you by chance using Menu Editor or Menu Wizard with the add-on? If so, see https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/copy-link-text-4750/reviews/#review-657778 about how either these add-ons or Firefox will need to fix something, as my add-on is using the recommended approach.

  • This is one of those extensions that ought to be built into Firefox. It's absolutely essential, since copying link text is a nightmare without it.

Unfortunately, as of FF 34, Copy Link Text has a conflict with Menu Editor, another essential extension, as far as I'm concerned! As long as Menu Editor is enabled, Copy Link Text doesn't show up in any of the menus.

I hope this gets fixed soon. I rely on both of these extensions, and I'm not sure I can choose which one to live without!

There doesn't seem to be any way to contact the author other than through these reviews. The support site is GitHub, which seems to be more a developer resource than a support request resource, but I'm not sure. Is there a way to post there?

Regardless, download and install this extension! All the cool kids are using it! :-D

    Developer response

Thanks for your review. I've submitted a bug report now to https://www.mozdev.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=25919 , and we'll see whether it is something Menu Editor can fix, as it indeed must be something on their end because my new version is using the recommended approach for adding context menu items (using the "Add-ons SDK" which allows the new version to be restartless). If it is not possible for them to fix (because of an issue with the way the SDK adds the items), then we can go from here to report the issue to Firefox. If you wish to keep informed of how that bug is going, you can add your email to the "Add cc" field. FYI, the program Menu Wizard also has an issue (one apparently simply cannot move Copy Link Text though it still works). • update, sorry, I continued testing and it appears the Track-Me-Not extensions is the culprit. Right now your extension is causing me no problems, just added the useful capability it's intended for . Thanks!

After lengthy process of elimination, enabling and disabling many plug-ins one at a time, it appears this plug-in is the source of problems I've been having for while. Firefox doesn't close normally and uses excess memory. Many actions get very slow when it running. As soon as I disable it, everything is fine. Closes normally, restarts normally. Maybe it doesn't play nice with one of my other plug-ins, don't know. I do know this is the only one that I've been able to identify that causes the problem all by itself.
I have used this for a long time and find it very useful. I hope it doesn't take too much effort to troubleshoot.

    Developer response

I assume you are using the latest version, right? Are you using a menu editing program? Some users have reported problems with them together (although not a memory problem). My add-on is rather light in terms of what it does, and it is now using the best practice of relying on Firefox's Add-on SDK (for restartless ability) as well.

  • This is a great add-on, it is simple and just works. I consider it to be essential as I use it quite often.

However, for whatever reason, the option in the context menu no longer appears when you are also using the "Menu Editor" add-on. In the end, I kept this add-on and disabled the other.

  • Would you like to have it translated in Italian?

    Developer response

Sure! Looks like you're already underway (assuming the BZ site gives you no trouble and my update today there was ok--not sure whether there were any changes since my previous version already on BZ but you may want to take a look to be sure). Thanks!

  • This add-on saves from having to manually highlight then manually copy a link name. You just right click the link and copy the link name to clipboard. No highlighting required. Only change I'd like to see is change the underlined character. It prevents using "T" to open in new link from keyboard, i.e. the default underlined "T" in Firefox's context menu. Slight annoyance, especially if a page has multiple links I want to open in new tab. 5-star if can change the character.

Thanks for your responsiveness. Looking forward to the new version!!!

    Developer response

Hi, I've added customizable support to the prefs now for the version just uploaded. You can wait for Mozilla to approve (probably within a couple days), or it is version 1.7.0 (or higher if I add any later ones) if you want to go to "Version Information" and upgrade now. However, I'm sorry that no accesskey will be present at all unless you are using the latest Firefox 35+ because of how restartless add-ons work (I've made the add-on restartless now too). If you absolutely need the accesskey now with an older FF version, you can go back to 1.5.3.

  • Cool! And this addon without adware (like Copy Link Name now).

  • Thank you for this addon. Very helpful )

  • A very useful add-in, but if it could be installed without restarting Firefox, it would be perfect.

    Developer response

The restartless add-on framework doesn't yet allow all of the functionality of regular add-ons as far as context menus (e.g., they don't work with keyboard commands), but I've brought this to the attention of Mozilla, and may work with them as time permits to fix. Thanks for the feedback!

  • Works Great, but it would be awesome if I could copy the Relative Link Location as well.

    Developer response

While I am happy to take feature requests, I would have expected a higher rating if you say it works great, and when the add-on does what it claims to do (and when your feature is really probably more suitable as a separate add-on since this is Copy Link _Text_). But that is a good idea, and something I may keep in mind.

  • This is the one of the addon I use most.
