Works, but does half the job (in Firefox 3.5). After the toolbar button is clicked, I *STILL* have to click another button in a dialog box. I want the button to simply *DO* the clearing job based on the last-used settings for the Clear Recent History... tool. That tool, accessible through the Tools menu, need not be displayed by this add-on's button.

About the Clear recent History Dialog

At the moment there is no way to suppress the "Clear Recent History" dialog in Firefox 3.5 and 3.5.1. In previous versions, there was a option that you could set that would prevent said related dialog from showing up whenever you would "Clear Private Data", but that option has been completely removed in present Firefox 3.5.x versions by Mozilla and not by me. I will look into finding a way to suppress the dialog if possible. Thank you for using my Add-on.

Great Add-on, Bad Icon Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I love this add-on for Firefox, but being a traditionalist, do not like the new shredded paper icon. Could we have a choice to put the old gray/black lock icon back instead?

Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Works fine for me, does just what I want. But for those of us less technically inclined, is there an easier way to get back to black-lock icon? The new "shredded paper" version is a little too obvious for those of us who have people looking over our shoulder. Thanks.

Seems to work. A couple of alternatives: (1) Build your own custom button set with the tool available from TOOLBARBUTTONS (2) Simply press ctrl+shift+delete

Red Moving Mozilla Head Image Available.. Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Two images are available to replace the default black lock icon.
The first is the Red Mozilla head profile. The second image appears
when you hover the mouse over the Red Mozilla head.
This hover image has the Red Mozilla head opening his mouth and
turning his head as if he is eating up all of the private data.

I used 7zip to view inside of the cpd.jar file located at this path:
C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\
j5vbuchh.default\extensions\{0dd39226-2650-404d-a43d-ffd906b35a9e}\chrome.

I used 7zip to open the blacklock.png default file in an outside viewer then edited
the 26x25 px file using gimp and saved it. 7zip asks you to confirm the modified
image in the cpd.jar archive which contains the folders and images that are part
of the Clear Private Data button extension.

If anyone is interested, I can email the modified cpd.jar file to them and they
can simply replace the original cpd.jar file with this one containing the two modified
(large Icons only) images.

It looks really cool in action and makes a perfect touch to see my Mozilla
dragon eating when you click on him to Clear Private Data.

Upgraded to 5 of 5 Stars since we are looking forward to having a setting
please to allow us (for theme/color reasons) to user select a button image.

Extra functionality suggestions Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Hi there. Thanks for the wonderfull script.

Two extra functionality suggestions for your next version are:

1. Provide us with a shortcut key so we can call it immediately from the keyboard (F9 maybe?)

2. If possible, provide us with an option tab where we can 'pre-select' which items we want to clear. I use the plugin while i'm webdeveloping and i want to clear cookies. By default, the options that are checked do not contain cookies so i have to do a couple of clicks more and its painful. Therefore, it would be nice if we had an option to 'pre-select' the default items which are about to be cleaned ;-)

anyway, all in all, a simple plugin to use that was missing from firefox3. i give it 4 stars from now, with the expectation to see the features that i suggested, so it can take a 5/5 ;-)

best regards

Very Nice Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Installed a short time ago. As far as I can tell it allows clearing the private data as set in Tools/Options with one click on a menu or toolbar. I am using it to delete tracking cookies from sites that require cookies. Clear Private Data does this without the need to close and restart Firefox. I use a dark theme so the lock icon is a bit difficult to see on the toolbar. The option to select different colored icons would be helpful but certainly not needed to enhance the functionality of this add-on.

Mr. E., thank you for making life a little bit easier.

Works well, except it does not clear the history (Previous Day) of the History Submenus 1.3 add-on. Mac OS 10.5.4, Firefox 3.0.3

Awesome.
Almost decided to learn how to make add-ons myself so I could make one of these.
Then I thought I'd look to see if anyone else already had.
Whaddya know.

Nice job

Needed: Secure wiping Rated 3 out of 5 stars

I agree with the comment made way back by whbg70. What's the point of deleting stuff if it can be undeleted by a variety of free undelete programs?
I'm planning to off my mother-in-law but what's the point if any half-assed forensic expert can undelete my erased schemes (dynamite in her wig, poison in her porridge, etc, etc)?

Version 0.2.2 Not functioning Rated 1 out of 5 stars

I just installed Clear Private Data v0.2.2. Unfortunately it is not working. The options button is "gray" so that the add-on could not be set up. I was hoping to add a button in the task bar.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (0.2.2).

Here is some help.

Hi Cliff,
There are no options to change for this extension. So yes, the "Options" button will be grayed out.

The description of this extension explains what it offers you. If you want to use the toolbar button for it, just right-click anywhere on the toolbar area in Firefox and click "Customize..." in the context menu that appears. Look for a black/gray padlock icon that says "Clear" underneath it, and drag that icon anywhere you want on the toolbar. Once you are finished placing the icon, click "Done" in the "Customize Toolbar" window.

Now, if you want to set the settings for the "Clear Private Data" feature that is part of Firefox, at the top of the window just above the toolbar area, go to and click:

Tools > Options...

and then click on "Privacy" in the "Options" window that had opened up. At the bottom of that section you will see a "Private Data" area, that is where you will be able to set the settings for the "Clear Private Data" feature of Firefox.

Enjoy!

It would make a real difference, if the "Clear" was secure. (Overwriting before delete)

Nice for privacy Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Wish it were configurable so that one click on the toolbar button would clear what you've set to be cleared (in options). I'd give it a 10 if you could do this. Regardless, it's a nice convenience and a great extension.
