Meet the CLiCk, Speak.js Developer

Why was CLiCk, Speak.js created?

I've always liked CLiCK, Speak, and other TTS extensions never quite had the same functionality. However, CLiCK, Speak had a weakness: it uses XPCOM and native APIs. Every time a new version of Firefox comes out, the extension has to be recompiled.

Then I discovered Speak.js, a JavaScript TTS engine based on eSpeak. I ripped out the existing TTS engines in CLiCK, Speak and replaced them with Speak.js. This allows the add-on to keep functioning when a new version of Firefox is released.

What's next for CLiCk, Speak.js

Long-term goals:

  • Update the version of eSpeak that Speak.js is generated from and change the output to use asm.js to improve performance (once I figure out how to use Emscripten).
  • Multi-language support, possibly by using code from meSpeak.js (modulary enhanced speak.js).
  • Allow different voices and add support for true female voices.
  • General speech improvements.
