Version 0.33 and 0.34 were working great until around 2.00pm 2nd August. I suspect the Grauniad is tweaking the coment page HTML just to mess this up.
Hi, unfortunately the changes are much quicker than the Mozilla review process is currently running, so this is back at the end of the queue, but is fixed from v 0.35 (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/developers/addon/ciffix/versions) or click on 'see all versions'.
Hi, Kale. We corresponded directly about four or five months ago when I had problem with ciffix and you then got it working again. Anyway, for the last couple of weeks I have noticed that ciffix just doesn't appear at the top of Guardian threads. I imagined that the Guardian had devised a way of making it disappear, because they don't like it. But I found its absence so aggravating that after another week I posted a message in several threads saying to other readers that I was missing ciffix and asking if anyone could enlighten me. Well within 24 hours both messages got removed - not just the text but the entire message so that no trace was left. But now I see a message of 19 June indicating that it has been recently running, and may still be. I wonder what's going on. I have the latest version of Firefox loaded (21.0) and I have downloaded the latest version of ciffix. But still no joy. Any ideas? I have disabled Ghostery and Adblocker then refreshed the Guardian pages, but no go.
One developer does in a few days what an entire team at the Guardian seems unable to do and restores true functionality to the Guardian comments feature. Without this, I would have given up on the Guardian six months ago.
What happened to CifFix? The whole point of getting this add-on was to get a proper flat view of ALL comments in chronological order, in order to see new comments in ongoing discussions without having to go through all the threads again, and now I find that replies are nested with the comment they are replies to again, with apparently no way to get new comments, whether they are replies or not, sorted where they belong, at the end of the list. It used to work a treat, but this completely defeats the purpose, and I might as well go back to default Guardian nesting view.
Hi, not sure the Guardian's changes quite warrant a 1-star review of cifFix! Anyway, I've put through an emergency fix to restore timestamp view (from version 28 of cifFix). Please read the 'about' box in cifFix to see how to use it best. Hopefully there'll be some smoother integration with the new system soon.
Thanks from the bottom of my heart for this wonderful thing you've done for us Guardian readers.
I'm only sorry it took me until today to discover it.
You've done a real mitzvah. May karma reward you.
I don't seem to be able to use this add-on.
I usually use firefox 12.0 on a Macbook and get a message that it is unavailable.
Sorry to use this means of contacting you but is this something that can be fixed>
Also is there a version for Safari?
At the moment, it's only supporting Firefox 18+ (including Mac versions). When I get a chance, I'll look at whether I can support earlier versions. Safari isn't ready yet, but again - it's something I'll look at when I get a chance. In the meantime, you can contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org
Excellent work - giving us choices such as the ability to read comments in the order they were written! A positive step forward - thank you. And it is very nicely integrated into CiF.
Edit - I was too quick, it is even better than I realised, allowing views to be switched without reloading including nested comments - wonderful.
Brilliant Kale. You've saved CiF.
Just to say thanks to the dev! Now I don't have to wade through tons of comments made by those damn 'nesters'.
Hey, Kale thank you so much for keeping updating this wonderful add-on. FFS, The Guardian's Comment is Free website would simply be unreadable without the good (and unpaid) work that you have done. Thank you, Thank you! I cannot actually tell you just how much! Hugs + kisses - I really don't care about your gender!
What you have done for the CiF community is little short of superb! I thank you again, Kale for your selfless work. Wish that there were more folk like you! :)
This little add-on works like magic to sort out the dreadful mess the Guardian have made of their Comment is Free section. It works almost instantly, no restart needed, and by default it collapses all the nested comments so you just see the main ones. Each Avatar has a little "Plus" sign under it, just click to expand all the replies in the nest.
It also adds a new drop-down menu at the start of each comments section that allows you to choose between the 'nested' view and a view 'sorted by timestamp', which is as close as it's possible to get to the old format of Comment is Free.
CiF used to be just about the best online discussion anywhere, and I'm grateful to the developers for restoring it to something close to its original form.
PS It's just been updated to v 0.12 and now even shows you the number of comments in any given nest, gets better and better!
