Version 2.3.0rc99 362.5 KiB Works with Firefox 51.0 and later

Brief 2.3 is a release dedicated to Multiprocess Firefox (also known as Electrolysis / e10s) support. Versions 2.3.0 and 2.3.0rc99 are the same and contain a last-minute fix over 2.3 and 2.3rc99.

Highlights
The Brief feed reading interface has been migrated to run in the content process, which makes Firefox UI smoother.

Known issues
Custom styles for the Brief UI outside the reading area (feed list, fixed buttons, etc.) are most likely broken due to the rewrite. CSS selectors used in them need to be changed.

Minor changes
  • brief.sqlite shrinking should work again.
  • Several overflowing labels are now ellipsized...
  • Brief shortcuts work correctly with Quick Search and do not activate from the main Firefox UI.
  • Images for the first run page are now bundled with Brief.
  • Added a German localization.

Version 2.3rc99 362.5 KiB Works with Firefox 51.0 and later

Brief 2.3 is a release dedicated to Multiprocess Firefox (also known as Electrolysis / e10s) support. Version 2.3rc99 is the same as version 2.3, but for the beta channel and English-only.

Version 2.3b2 362.1 KiB Works with Firefox 51.0 and later

Brief 2.3 will be a release dedicated to Multiprocess Firefox (also known as Electrolysis / e10s) support. Here is the second beta version.

The main change since 2.2 series is completely rewritten Brief tab, which now runs in the content process, and the support code. Several minor bugs have also been fixed.

There should be no significant user-visible changes (some minor styling improvements) except for one. All custom styles that modify the Brief tab (not the feed entries display) are likely broken and will require an update; sorry, that was almost inevitable with tag name changes between XUL and XHTML.

Beta 2 fixes several bugs, both introduced in 2.3b1 and inherited from earlier versions.

Version 2.3b1 283.1 KiB Works with Firefox 51.0 and later

    • Tag list did not display correctly
    • Wide items required scrolling the whole feed view
    • Long feed titles pushed the controls off the screen
    • Unsubscribing from a feed was not working
    • Unstarring an item was working incorrectly
    • Clicks in the margins used to cause unexpected actions
    • Feeds could jump in the list if subscribed multiple times
    • Too long labels on buttons caused the sidebar to be too wide
    • The tutorial did not open from the Brief tab

Version 2.2b1 260.3 KiB Works with Firefox 38.0 and later

Brief 2.2 beta 1
Changes:
  • UI: revamped the unread counter on the Brief icon
  • Fixed: tag list used to display incorrectly
  • Fixed: wide feed items used to require horizontal scrolling
  • Compatibility updates
  • Internal refactoring

Version 2.0b1 137.2 KiB Works with Firefox 29.0 and later

Improvements:
  • Completely new look!
  • Redesigned interface to make some things easier to find and quicker to use.
  • Simplified subscribing to feeds. Just pick Brief as the subscription method
instead of manually adding a Live Bookmark to the home folder.
  • Organize button that allows you to manage your feeds.
  • Today folder, showing today's items from all feeds.
  • The choice between headlines view and full view is remembered per-feed.
  • An easier way to collapse an expanded item in headlines view.
  • Unread folder has been removed. It was unnecessary because All items
provides the same if you press the button to show only unread items.
  • Option to change the home folder location has been removed.
Fixed bugs:
  • The options window grows in size every time it's opened. It's gonna cover the entire planet unless we stop it.
  • Brief doesn't work well with RTL text, especially bi-directional.
  • Greek characters handled incorrectly in date labels in headlines view.

Version 2.0a1 135.9 KiB Works with Firefox 24.0 and later

Version 1.7b1 148.3 KiB Works with Firefox 16.0 and later

What's new in Brief 1.7 beta 1?
Improvements and changes:
  • Option to exclude feed's items from overall unread count (thanks to Moritz Schallaböck for the patch).
  • If a single feed has been updated, its name is shown in the sliding notification (thanks to Moritz Schallaböck for the patch).
  • Tooltips for item buttons.
  • Better descriptions of item dates for recent items ("5 minutes ago", "2 hours ago" etc.).
  • Correct plural forms are now used in languages with complex plural forms.
  • More consistent shortcuts for scrolling and selecting items:
    • Space / Shift + Space scroll by screen in headlines view, by entry otherwise.
    • K/J always by entry.
    • U/I always by screen.
  • Respect Firefox setting regarding smooth scrolling.
  • Expire entries as soon as the option is set, not only after updating a feed.
  • Sort modified items by their original date, instead of the modification time.
Fixed bugs:
  • Feed title isn't a link any more in Firefox 17.
  • The number of unread items under a tag isn't hidden when there are none.
  • Brief's icon is too big in the Addons Manager listing.
  • Changing feed locations in the feed properties window isn't saved.

Version 1.6b1 235.0 KiB Works with Firefox 4.0 and later

What's changed?
  • Redesigned headlines view. No point in describing, just try it out and tell me what you think!
  • The option to turn off highlighting of the current item has been removed.
  • The option to open links in new tabs has been removed, this is now the default behaviour.
  • When storing limits are set, old items are expired immediately after a feed is updated.
  • Database is periodically compacted in the background. The prompt when emptying Trash has been removed.
  • All database operations have been converted the asynchronous API. In plain English this means that Brief is more responsive because the interface isn't blocked while waiting for data to be read or written to disk.
  • Improved speed of importing OPML.
  • Improved N shortcut (mark all items on the screen as read) not to affect items that are visible only in small part.
  • Cleaner list of feeds: number of unread entries displayed in a box on the right, more spacing between folders.
What's fixed?
  • Updating progress meter wasn't displayed when Brief is opened after feed updating has already started.
  • The toolbar button tooltip was not refreshed if feeds are updated while it's shown.
  • "What's New?" page was shown for fresh installations.
  • Quickly switching or updating feeds could cause Brief to load items infinitely, making Firefox hang.
