A little buggy but good at its core purpose Rated 4 out of 5 stars

This extension works very well for maintaining searchable text/content history, which is what I was really looking for ... and is frankly embarrassing that Firefox doesn't have this feature built-in yet as do most of the other major browsers.

The prefs GUI for Boomtango is a little buggy, some of the things you can't toggle on and off -- for instance, you can check the "Enable Thumbnails" option but then it's magically reset back to being unchecked. And you seemingly can't edit the Blacklist either.

This would get 5 starts if those bugs were fixed, it would be nice if someone savvy with extension authoring could pick up maintenance of this one!

Otherwise, being able to search your text history is great. I'm concerned about the sluggishness and database size growing over time but for now (only been using it 1 day) it's working OK.

Btw, these observations are on Firefox 8.0.1.

a bit sluggish, but that's to be expected with the amount of data being presented - and the system I'm on. While storing a thumbnail is great, I would have liked to have a setting for displaying it.

The window wasn't scrollable.

If I weren't being petty, I couldn't find any problems with it at all.

All in all, it's fantastic. I'll have to fix it to work with Firefox 5.*, if the authors don't.

This is almost exactly what I was looking for to browse through my history and clean it up. The default Firefox interface leaves a lot to be desired. But the fact that I can't delete history items with Boomtango means I'll probably uninstall it and be forced to stick with the default abilities. Five stars if you could delete history items.

great, but slow Rated 3 out of 5 stars

I have a large history (set to six months, very intense internet usage). It can take Boomtango up to two minutes to render a page view. I get four FF warnings about a blocked script (set to 30s) apart, during which time my host is 100% maxed on one core, with not much disk drive activity. Seems to be computing some kind of index in memory. This is a Core Duo 3 GHz with 8GB RAM running Ubuntu. My Google search results are often stalled two to five seconds as Boomtango computes the search history overlay box and there is no config option to turn this off. I don't use this feature much and it gets in the way by making my regular search slower. The search overlay box doesn't play all that well with NoSquint, either. My Google search results are presented with a larger than normal font and the overlay ends up obscuring other page contents. The two minute stall would be OK if it only happened once at the beginning of a history trawl, but it repeats every time I dial back another week, making it almost unusable.

When it responds, I love it, but it's not yet ready for the people who need it most.

This is a great concept for an add-on, and I appreciate what you are trying to do. But the Boomtango page needs to be made scrollable in order to be more usable. I would also like it to be easier to delete history entries.

Great addition, I have used since a long time. I use Firefox Portable and would set a maximum size for the file "boomtango.sqlite. Thank you.

Fantastic. It is rather interesting to get to see my browsing history in this way. Rather than navigating through the tiresome ol' history menu, I can just load up Boomtango and I'm ready to go. It is much easier to rediscover websites that I have visited, and it fits into Firefox like jelly in a doughnut.

Plus, considering that a similar add-on named Voyage (which has a similar purpose but shows history in a more visual way) doesn't play well with a long-time friend of mine named Stealther, and considering that Boomtango and Voyage are pretty much the only two of their kind as far I'm concerned, I'd go with Boomtango everytime.

Of course, even though this may be an awesome add-on, there are a few suggestions that I would suggest.
- There should be more thumbnails per page in the Thumbnails section.
- The Boomtango page should be scrollable, as ungeographical stated in his review.
- If I don't want Firefox to leave a trace on my computer and I take measures to make that happen, Boomtango should follow suit and should not record my history.
- I want to be able to customize how the Boomtango page looks.

Then again, those are suggestions. It's not necessary to take heed of them, but they would sure make my Boomtango experience a much more enjoyable one. Either way, Boomtango deserves a 5 out of 5.
Nice job!

Simply great! Thanks for this work. I was looking for an addon recording visual history for years. But please: make the boomtango page SCROLLABLE. Now i can't scroll it in any way, no scrollbars visible. Even better if you could manage history items with a button or toolbar or context menu entry like an old addon called Total Recall (quick tag page or quick bookmark page). Anyway, a must have.

Thanks!

Thanks for your review. We'll try to get better scrolling in thumbnail view for the next release, and see what we can do to make one button categorization possible (I assume that's what you are looking for).

In any regards, thanks for recommending and using boomtango!

A new must-have add-on. This is the way history search should be done. The richness of the interface alone makes it fun to play with, but being able to find things again adds a whole new layer of usefulness to the browsing experience. The extra data gathered is genius (time spent on site, thumbnails!). The fact this is all local and private means even the tin foil beanie crowd (you know who you are) will get some use out of this. Very nice work.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (0.9.19).
