Xmarks BYOS Edition 1.0.0
Xmarks (formerly Foxmarks) 3.3.2
If all you want to do is to alphabetize your bookmarks, then "SortPlaces" is a good substitute for the sorting feature in "Bookmarks Sync and Sort." . After installing 'SortPlaces', check your "Bookmarks" pull-down in Firefox, and you'll see a new selection, "Sort Bookmarks." It has a variety of different types of "Options" you can select, for sorting bookmarks. Take note that the only problem I found with this add-on, is when you launch it, a small pop-up window will appear giving you the status of the sorting process. If your Firefox 3 browser has a lot of bookmarks that need to be sorted, the sorting process will appear to slow down or freeze up. If after a few minutes the pop-up window does not change its status message, click the "Cancel" button, then check if the alphabetical sorting operation was successful in your bookmarks. Most times, the operation to sort was successful... but the pop-up window does not auto-exit after it is done. This is the only problem I've found with the 'SortPlaces' add-on. But to reiterate, if all you need to do is to alphabetize your bookmarks, then this is a 'good' substitute (I didn't say it was "the best," though) for 'Bookmark Sync and Sort' for Firefox 3. (If you can find a better sorter, share it with us).
This was awesome while it lasted. I will miss FTP and webDAV backup in fox 3.5
Thanks for the tip.
It seems is no longer maintained, I suggest you use SyncPlaces instead. It does the same thing using your very own server (NOT someone elses server), plus it syncs passwords also.
This was so vastly superior to Foxmarks. I wish it worked in Firefox 3.
This is one of the most useful sync for bookmarks. Please continue the development for Firefox 3.xx.
This is the new port: PlaceSync 0.2
Best bookmark plugin, would be great if it was FF3.x compatible! :))
Prompts an error whenever I try to import the bookmarks after having exported them complaining that the file wasn't xbel conform. Same thing with ftp upload and download.
I guess I'll have to try a different add-on. I tried it on two computers, one running windows xp, the other one vista. Both with firefox 2 - up to date.
Since updating to Firefox 3, this is the add-on I miss the most. Please update it !!
Anyone needing the 'sort' facility try:
SortPlaces - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/9275
SyncPlaces - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8426
This is the best bookmark sharing tool i've ever used !
Please update the add-on for firefox 3!
syncplaces works fine as a replacement :
Will this be updated for FireFox Ver 3?
Since this GREAT add-on has not been updated, and one of the alternatives, PlaceSync, seems to have disappeared some days ago, and the other, SyncPlaces, can't be installed because FF3 says the downloaded file is corrupted (the same happened with PlaceSync before it vanished), what are we going to do now?
Well, there is a workaround to install PlaceSync (which uses XBEL format, like Sync and Sort) : go to http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/PlaceSync-Download-106689.html
It is a mac version, but it should work for every FF3 (it did for my linux version). When you download it, it doesn't ask you to be installed just like any addon. So you have first to download it to your hard disk, then chose "open file" in the File menu of FF3, it will then be identified as an addon and normally installed.
And enjoy it, waiting for "merge" function to appear on next version.
Much better than SyncPlaces that uses a different format, json.
I still note that "PlaceSync" is not found by addon search. Strange, isn't it?
Please update this great extension for Firefox 3.0.1!
Unfortunately it looks as though this developer has disappeared, all pages show either no such user or return a 404 file not found. Hopefully s/he'll come back and continue development!
none of the other extensions supports xbel bookmarks! needed urgent for FF3.
Nice Replacement by Andy Halford
i'm looking for a good alternative at BS&S and i have just found "PlaceSync" and "SyncPlaces". What are differences?
They are a good alternative but, please, can you tell me if it's possible to sync just a part of bookmarks? like the option "select local bookmarks folder"
thanks for all
I've also written a Firefox 3 compatible extension from scratch that does the same basic synchronisation task. See https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8426
I got Foxmarks working using ftp, and I just posted a review on the Foxmarks page explaining how to do it. Foxmarks seems to be better about auto-updating the bookmarks so I am switching to that.
I have done a first step in making the basic functionality of this extension available in Firefox 3. Please try out PlaceSync at https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/8379 and give feedback there. Note also that the initial version does not have as many features as Bookmark Sync and Sort yet.
@Garfotto Even is you use your own ftp/webdav Foxmarks will send private information (maybe even your bookmarks) to their servers, see there wiki. "While we can't provide support if you're using your own server, we're collecting information provided by users who choose to go that route." So there are no real alternatives yet for Bookmark sync and sort. Is there anybody skilled enough to start a similar project?
great tool! but not for FF 3.x. Tired waiting for an update I looked for an alternative tool which does not need the server of an provider. I found it with foxmarks. Normally it is for use with the foxmark server, but there is a advanced tab under options where you can configure your own ftp /dav server. Works without the foxmark server.
This is the only working sync addon that does not copy your bookmarks to some more or less trustworthy online provider, but lets you use your own webspace and even uploads data via secure webdav. A pity it isn't available for Firefox 3!
