Great, could be better. Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Nice add on. Time to educate users about the evils of flash cookies.

But this add on would be better if it gave the type of control that the Objection add on had. I would like to remove each Flash Cookie without having removing the SYS.SOL file that has my settings.

Thanks for the add on.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (1.41).

I think it is better...

First please update to the latest version which currently is 1.41 and available on my homepage. In BP 1.41 select your sys.sol file and press 'Prevent automatic LSO deletion'. So this LSO will be protected and not deleted. Note that any LSO's in subfolders of a protected folder are protected too. Thus you do not need to exclude every single LSO. There also is an option to edit the paths of protected folders.

This is another nice extension to increase one's personal privacy. However, cannot use the last two update versions. The Options box does not work past 1.38 with the installed extensions in FF 3.5.1. Don't want to register at author's website for support comments, one reply stated must be another extension causing problem? Must be different coding in v1.39 or 1.40?

I wanted to take a moment to say thank you for your creative work and excellent addons for Firefox 3.5.1, currently using AskFforSanitize 1.8, BetterPrivacy 1.40, RightToClick 1.3, StayInOnlineMode 1.0. All of which are pure genius. I appreciate the fact that you have taken the time to create these needed tools. Each if uniquely functional and makes a difference in my browsing safety and functionality.

How could you not use this one.....?

A wonderful add-on that every user should use to maintain their right to privacy. Something hidden corporate opt-ins strip from us.

Once set up you will never notice BP. It's a beautiful piece of programming code, being tiny and very well maintained.

EXCELLENT add-on! Rated 5 out of 5 stars

NettiCat, don't listen to the naysayers! BetterPrivacy is one of the essential Add-ons for Firefox along with Adblock Plus. After installing, it was discovered that I had over 500 (!) LSOs stored on my PC that I had no clue were even there. I'm also happy to report that, at least so far, my browsing experience has been completely unaffected by installing and using this add-on. And judging by these reviews, it looks as though if I were to encounter a problem that NettiCat would quickly provide friendly, timely advice. It's nice to see someone stand behind their add-on creation like that. Again keep up the good work and great add-on!

This addon DESTROYS CNN.com embedded videos. Even uninstallation of addon leaves embedded cnn videos crippled. The only way to undo this problem is by uninstalling Firefox and reinstalling firefox. I did this for each plugin to identify the problem with cnn videos. BetterPrivacy was the culprit!

@tbex2

The flash player default cookie stores each flash-enabled site you visited. Its deletion is disabled by default as it also stores all other settings related to the flash player unfortunately (e.g. update interval). If you want to get rid of it automatically as well than just check the option. I already suggested over at NettiCat that at least a warning should be added that the standard LSO is also used for tracking but one can't really blame him for choosing functionality over possibly undesired side effects (especially for technically less knowledgeable people).

Anyway, 1.38 is a great addon and NettiCat gives quick and friendly support in case problems crop up. Wish the AMO reviewers would update it more often as it's really unacceptable that the version here is several versions behind the current one.

Tracking History is still easily possible Rated 3 out of 5 stars

This is great add-on to begin with.
Unfortunately, our privacy is still compromised, even when the add-on enabled and following setting is checked:
- On cookie deletion also delete empty cookie folders

While most users who installs this add-on may feel comfortable to visits all sort of sites, apparently they do not aware that anybody can still know exactly which flash enabled sites they were visiting.

Here, take a look at this Macromedia link below, and see in your own eyes, your own history:
http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager07.html

In contrary, when manually deleting LSO via the [Remove All LSO's] button of the add-on, those sites tracking history is gone for good.

Deleting only the site data storage, without deleting the bare fact that I visited that site, is still a big privacy concern.

I wish you would apply the auto-deletion to work the same way as the manual deletion works (why there should be any difference anyway?).

Tracking history not possible

I think you just did not enable the option to delete the Flash default cookie.
This option usually is not enabled automatically, for good reason. The URL you provided just shows the Flash player settings manager with an empty list of visited websites. Note, I never clear LSO's manually, everything was removed automatically and completely, using BP default settings. If you still have problems you might want to file a bug on my website.

Ubuntu directory for LSO? Rated 3 out of 5 stars

Hi,
can someone give me the correct directory for the LSO cookies for Ubuntu? The system is unable to find the correct directory and gives a pop-up:
"BetterPrivacy is searching for your LSO cookie directory. The search takes longer than expected. To abort the search and define the directory manually press Cancel. To continue the search press Ok! (Firefox might be unresponsive while searching)."

I tried Googling for it but most of the results were praise and reviews about the add-on and the authors homepage didn't help either. Firefox version 3.0.11 Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu canonical 1.0 and Ubuntu version 9.04.

Any help appreciated,

Niko Kotiniemi

I added the paths to the FAQ but it will take some time until this site is updated

So I post the information here too:

Q: Error-message: BetterPrivacy is searching for your LSO cookie directory. The search takes longer than expected.

A: In Firefox open BetterPrivacy (Menu->Tools->BetterPrivacy) and enter the correct path of your Flash data directory. Depending on your operating system this should be one of the following paths:
Windows: %APPDATA%\Macromedia\Flash Player\
Macintosh: ~/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player/
Linux/Unix: ~/.macromedia/Flash_Player/

Great extension, but not compatible with Firefox 3.5 (with the internalization of the FLASH VIDEO VIEWING engine). If your browser crashes after updating to Firefox 3.5, you'll need to remove this extension until it is made compatible again.

problems Rated 2 out of 5 stars

Firefox 3.5 does not support the BetterPrivacy extension. When I install it, then try to configure the preferences, Firefox hangs. I have tried this several times, with the same result every time. I have a Mac Pro running the latest system, with *lots* of memory. I am very disappointed.
