Hello, are there any plans to port it for Firefox Quantum (57+)? I am just realizing that I can not use Firefox without this feature/plugin.
This addon is compatible with Tab Mix Plus on my setup as of this writing. I'm running 32-bit Firefox 53 on Windows 7 64 bit. I think compatibility has to do with the inverse focus tab settings within Tab Mix Plus.
Thanks for the info!
@Casey J'ADORE votre français !! :D
Sweet. Works well on mouse click with Ctrl. key held down. Very happy with this.
I would like to press e.g. SHIFT to decide if
"open the tab next to current tab"
"open the tab at last tab position"
Thanks for reply.
This way, we'll have to press Ctrl + Shift + Enter to open the new tab at the BACKGROUND and NEXT to the current tab.
Thanks Sam -- I will keep that suggestion in mind if I do an update. Unfortunately there's a good chance that other tab-behavior-modifying extensions will not co-exist with Background Tabs (just due to the nature of how extensions work), so it's not always possible to get the perfect combination of behaviors that you seek, but you might see if you can find one that will work in conjunction with mine.
When i fould this add-on, i thought it is what i am looking for. But it doesn't work. I'm using firefox 26.0 and already have the Tab Mix add-on installed. Looking forward to the update. Thanks any way.
I just looked in to the Tab Mix Plus code. I just glanced at it, but it does appear that they use some protective code to guard the section of code that we both modify (i.e. to break other extensions rather than be broken themselves).
Understandable, since I'm sure their code depends on that section to some degree, but the down side is that my extension will not work if Tab Mix (at least Tab Mix Plus, possibly Lite as well?) is installed, and there's no practical way I know to make the two compatible with each other. If my extension skills were sharper I'd probably be able to find a way or work something out with them, but it's not going to happen as things stand.
Background Tabs will have to be the lightweight option, and if you want the Tab Mix options, you'll have to forsake Background Tabs. Sorry. :-) It's a bummer because I'm sure there's a lot of crossover between Tab Mix users and people that would be interested in Background Tabs.
Personally, I can't surf without Background Tabs, which is why I wrote it, so the choice is easy for me. :-)
this addon not working for me ... i still have to press Ctrl key simultaneously or choose from RightClick menu in order to open any of the search link, webpage link or bookmarks in new tab IN THE BACKGROUND ... it continues to steal focus to new tabs ... have Firefox 23.0 portable, settings open all tabs in the background, have tab mix plus also .... all my new tabs are stealing focus immediately ... please help ...
Hi - "Firefox Portable" is a 3rd-party distribution of Firefox, so I can't officially support it, but maybe we can figure out what's going on (since it's probably unrelated to FF Portable).
I'm afraid I don't understand the description of your problem. With Background Tabs, you do still have to hold down Ctrl; you describe that as if it's not the expected behavior?
You are saying that even when using the Ctrl key, the new tabs are opening in the foreground?
Unfortunately I have no idea how my add-on might interact with Tab Mix plus... have you tried running firefox with only my extension, or only certain combinations of extensions? If it's a problem interacting with Tab Mix Plus, I can look in to it, but it might be a while before i can fix it (if a fix is possible -- Tab Mix Plus changes way more of the system than my simple extension does.)
What version of FF are you using, and on which OS/version?
In about:config, what are the values of browser.search.openintab and brower.tabs.loadInBackground ?
In the future, I'd appreciate it if you didn't give a bad rating before seeking support for your problem.
Does exactly what it claims to do!
Giving 5 stars, does what it says it will do.
Editing review completely. I stopped using this addon because I found one that loads search bar results in an unfocused tab without any additional key press.
[update - thanks for editing your review!]
Hi - you're saying that in the past you'd just click the search magnifying glass or hit return, with no modifier keys, and the results would open in a new, unfocused background tab? That seems odd to me. Perhaps a different add-on actually was providing this functionality? Or maybe there was a previous browser config variable that they remoevd? The browser about:config variable browser.search.openintab can make it open in a different tab, but it's focused. I'm not aware of any version of Firefox that opened the results in a new, background tab.
Nothing changed in this extension's functionality during the last upgrade, and this extension never used to provide for that functionality, as you said in your review, so I'm a little sad that you gave a 3 star review based on a feature that went away and didn't have anything to do with Background Tabs :-), but I'll consider it for a future version if I get to making one.
