Does what it says Rated 3 out of 5 stars

I give this three stars because it is such a needed utility, not because this is a great implementation. If I click on a link and then hit "back" I want it to always work, whether or not it opened a new tab or window. This is common sense and should be the way browsers are designed. Sadly, we have to rely on add-ons like this to fix the UI.

What works: When the "Back" button would normally be disabled (greyed out), it is removed and a "Close" button is added. Clicking on that button or hitting Alt + ←, correctly closes the tab.

What doesn't work: The Close button that is added is placed on the right side of my toolbar, even though the back button is on the left. The whole point of this for me is that I shouldn't have to do anything different to "go back". Because of that, this add-on fails for me. If that one bug was fixed, I would have marked this four stars. (To get five stars, it would have to include "Forward IS Undo Close Tab" functionality to make the Back and Forward buttons completely symmetrical.)

Other notes: I did not see the "blank" entry bug in the context menu that a previous reviewer mentioned. Also, it appears development of this add-on stopped with Firefox 3.0. The fact that it works at all is rather amazing.

Good, but a bit buggy and some usability issues. Rated 2 out of 5 stars

The addon adds an empty entry to the right click menu, so you just have a blank button there forever that does nothing.
The additional button the addon adds is unconfigurable for some reason, which means you can't remove or hide it without removing the addon. A bit of a shame since the button doesn't provide any exclusive or useful functionality anyway.

a simple and great addon. I advise you to install Firegestures addon and to assign the LEFT gesture with : BrowserHandleBackspace();

doesn't work well on Mac Rated 2 out of 5 stars

- doesn't support swipe navigation (three-finger or two-finger) gestures on Mac trackpad.
- looks ugly, square icon put into round hole on back button.

Mac users, try "back to close" addon instead, works well...

no key combos on Mac FF 9 Rated 2 out of 5 stars

FF 9.0 on Mac OS X. Toolbar button and menu both work, but keyboard combo does not. No other tab-related extensions installed. Oh, well.

Thanks to have updated your Back IS Close extension ;)
I have tried to install it on FF5 but I encountered first the documented problem with IE Tab Plus. So I have uninstalled IE Tab Plus then reinstalled it.
But I have always a problem : it works with the button but not with the mouse moves.
I use the FireGesture 1.6.5 extension and the left move tries to do the back but not to do the close.
Maybe FireGesture option must be updated like for secure Login extension for which I have set the script : secureLogin.login();
Thanks if you can explain how to do it with FireGesture.
Best regards. menet

Lauren,
sorry for the trouble. I'm the BiC author, and it's working for me in FF 3.6.15. Could you email me at back-is-close@diffenbach.org please?

I *love* this Add-on and got addicted to it back in FF2. It's much better than Back To Close, but after installing it on a fresh FF3 a week ago and updating yesterday to 3.6.14 it is, once again, broken. The "close" button works, but going back in the browser is completely broken.

Sorry guys, I'm going back to Back To Close (even though I don't like it) because it works from update to update.

New FF3 Compatible Clone of BackIsClose Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I've created an extension that performs the exact functionality of BackISClose. I'm very grateful to TP Diffenbach for this extension and just wanted to make a FF3 compatible extension for us all to use.

It is currently in the developer sandbox. Please try it and leave some feedback so that I can get it on the public site for all to use.
