I am red-green colourblind. I get mixed up between some ambiguous colours - I can mistake red and brown, blue and purple, yellow and green. It causes some embarassing situations, sometimes. For instance, when I was only 13 years old, and in my geography class at school, my teacher at the time embarassed me in front of the whole classroom because I had coloured the sea in my world map purple.
If you do not know a colourblind person, then you may not know this, but people like me are hugely sensitive to colour. In fact, experiencing colour is one of the great joys of my life. So when I couldn't find a Firefox theme that was bright and colourful enough to suit me, without being impractical, childish or girly, I set about creating my own themes. In this way, the AvantGarde series of Firefox themes was born. Now I never feel embarassed because I can't tell which colour the buttons on my screen are, and am never embarassed because each coloured button has its own distinct function.
Up next for AvantGarde is more skinning, generally. I plan to reintroduce IconMinis for Firefox 4 within AvantGarde - they're much smaller icons which decorate menus, so that the functions of each menu item is clear and colourful. I also plan on investigating speed testing for my theme. I understand that users want a theme that doesn't slow down the start-up time of Firefox, and so I will be working to reduce the performance impact of AvantGarde in upcoming versions however I can.
