What if ATR doesn't work: Incompatibilities with other add-ons have been reported to cause any sorts of malfunctions. If you have problems, most likely it's another add-on interfering with ATR. A workaround is to selectively disable your other add-ons until ATR works, so to spot the culprit. Alternatively if you wish to keep the incompatible add-on active, you can probably still use the right mouse button to start ATR speech, but fancier functions might not work.
Automatik Text Reader is a multi-language speech synthesizer featuring automatic language recognition and paragraph selection.
It works fully in the background and does not popup cumbersome windows or toolbars; the user interface is provided solely by one button installed on the top-right screen corner and by a right-click menu.
No limits on the hourly usage are imposed.
Currently supported languages:
More languages will be supported if the add-on gains users interest.

- select: activate the text-selection tool. Selection is automatic: right-click over any text to synthesize it;
- play / pause: pause & resume;
- back & forward: shift speech 5 seconds back or forward.
