Good but some errors like a popup about not being able to extract ids, the user account name not showing in the sidebar and the big one, not doing photos. It says that it's broken under the ArchiveFB tab though. That's probably the biggest reason why someone would want this. Fix those and this is a fantastic addon. Seeing how the last reviews are from 2012 it's probably been abandoned.

Archive a group? Rated 4 out of 5 stars

In the intro text it says it can save even facebook groups, but not in the main description. I even can't find any option to save groups when installed. Can it save or not? :)

Can I modify the source to archive pages? Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Is this an open source project and if so, where is the source kept? I would like to add to it to give it the ability to archive pages (not just profiles) because we are required by law to archive our communication with customers and I don't have a way to do that as yet.

Thanks!

Open Source

brandedsource, the project is open source and can be accessed at http://code.google.com/p/archivefacebook/. Please feel free to make modifications and, if you think it would be useful to others, contribute back to the source.

Great! Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I'm glad this was developed. I wonder if it's still needed, as I recently noticed that facebook has a feature that allows one to download all one's content. I suspect it's not in a practically usable format...

SUGGESTION:
I noticed that there is a HUGE amount of redundant data in ArchiveFB/data. I saved a couple GIGABYTES of space by replacing each set of identical files (using a script) with one copy of the file, hardlinked to all the locations where the identical copies were. ArchiveFacebook should do this hardlinking itself, or modify the HTML to point to single files instead of many identical copies of each.

Example: several thousand copies of the same 300KB .CSS file.

Thank you Matt for your answer. I do understand that it is very hard to cope with facebook developers changes.

Facebook conception of openness is somewhat strange. They change to often many basic mechanisms within their application and so everywhere code that relied on what existed is broken by their decisions.

This would be 4-star, if these would be fixed:

Why not automatic daily backup in the middle of night when I am sleeping, but Firefox browser is on?

"In general, umlauts and other language-specific characters are encoded wrongly"

He means ÅÄÖ... characters.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (1.3.0.1).

Automatic backup is not part of the add-on's functionality though it would be a good enhancement to be able to specify an automatic backup schedule. The character issue is a known problem that we hope to resolve in a future release.

Nice idea, but it does not work well: With my profile in German, several categories like e.g. photos were not archived at all. After I changed the FB language to English, the main photo page was archived, but not any albums. :( In general, umlauts and other language-specific characters are encoded wrongly. As it is, the add-on is unusable for me. I hope it will improve over the next few weeks.

Seems like a nice solid add-on, but I would really like further development of this extension. Perhaps in the future, this extension could also download selected friends' Walls and such. I would gladly pay for such a feature. Thanks.

MaStAViC, the ability to archive others' Facebook content was added in version 1.4. Please give it a spin and let us know of any improvements or bugs.

Good but some conflicts Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Very useful extension for backup-maniacs like me! But creates some problems in Firefox with bookmarks recording. At least I was able to save my bookmarks normally again, once I had disactivated this extension. I guess I should activate it only when I make a backup on my facebook profile, once every 3 months, and everything will be alright.

Good in theory Rated 3 out of 5 stars

Its a cool idea in theory, but as some others have said, it still has a ways to go. I uninstalled because it breaks 3 finger swipe multitouch on os x.

"Is this an open source project and if so, where is the source kept?" I asked that question too (since there are obviously some ways this extension could be improved).

It looks like if you just download the .xpi file, you can extract the contents and edit it, then repack it as an extension and install it. A license file is included which tells us that yes it is open-source under the Mozilla Public License.

For how to edit an extension see lifehacker.com/264490/how-to-build-a-firefox-extension

I would have given the app 5 stars but it really needs the ability to add in the dates you want to go from and to. This will allow people to get data from further back without the add-on falling over which is does when Firefox memory goes to about 1Gb.
Because of this and the fact I can only go back 6 months I will only give it 3 stars...

Archive in pieces wanted Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Could we get a parameter to this to state that I'd like to archive stuff between some dates? I'd like to start using this on regular basis and keep the archives so that each time it would not take that long and then I'd have a file for each month or each three months or something - no need to recreate everything from the start each time.

In my opinion, the most important part of Facebook backup is friends' information.
So, this add-on does not meet my requirement..
Regarding SocialSafe:
The only reason I bought SocialSafe is to have a backup of my friends' email addresses&phone numbers.
I don't care the photos because they are already in my harddisk.
I don't care my profile because I already know who I am, where I studied/worked, what is my favourites etc.!
That is very disappointing...

1Year limited? Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Hi, I tried multiple backup, but every goes until max 12 month before. And in options there is not an option to extend it. Then I will try socialsafe.net tool. :(

Freedom! Rated 3 out of 5 stars

Love the idea of this extension, but my goal is more subversive – I want something that backs up all my data, media and connections so that I can more easily migrate to another platform when a free and open source alternative becomes available (or at least something less controlling than Facebook). Maybe this is a first step. (erik aronesty: The problem I see with http://www.fbarchive.com is that I don't see who archives the data, or where. That's an even bigger question mark than Facebook itself.)
