Off topic but search tip of @sturner6 fails. Tested on numerous Mac systems.
Want to try this plugin but incompatible with FF16
If you need to be able to search not only bookmark names but also data within the description, tags, or other data fields
in a bookmark,SHOW PARENT FOLDER does it perfectly!
After installation, just open bookmarks page (not just the sidebar) and right click on the column bar to add those columns (ie: Description, Tags, etc) you wish to be included in your searches. If you don't select a particular column, the data contained in it will NOT be searched.
Once the columns are selected, the contained data will be included in searches from either the main bookmark window or the sidebar.
I can't believe Mozilla does not make global searches of bookmark data possible but at least this add-on does.
The other add-on, Go Parent Folder is absolutely excellent! It allows you to find the parent folder for any line item in your
search simply by right-clicking on the item and selecting "Go Parent Folder". If you have hundreds of bookmark folders,
you will absolutely appreciate this little add-on!
I've been looking for an update to this that works for ff3.6 for so long...and I finally found it.
Show Parent Folder. It is up to date, works great and compatible with FF 3.5-3.7
A nice complement to this is Go To Parent Folder.
Don't blame Humberto. He did a lot of good with the earlier versions, but this new "Places" stuff may be an extremely hard code nut to crack. Combining History and Bookmarks may give some a power they never had before, but uses a lot of real estate. That's why I signed up for the Vacuum Cleaner; startup of Ff was getting slooooooooooooooow. I'm no add-on creator, but I know there are a lot of people out there who are. Otherwise we wouldn't have the Galaxy of add-ons we can choose from. Many thanks to all the producers! We'll love you some more if you can beat this challenge! I miss being able to find the Folder I left things in too.
Unbelievable but true - there isn't a way to search thru bookmark DESCRIPTIONS in FF3.6!!
please do us all a very big Favor and upgrade this really good and very helpful Tool for Firefox 3.6 or higher.
Thx a lot Matey
Please SOMEONE please reimplement this. I used Fx2 for extensive research and have 100,000+ bookmarks with detailed descriptions. I'll PAY someone to do a description search. Another review here says to just move the description to tags but that's virtually impossible for me.
How can we get this to work on FF3? Larry Becque doesn't know what he's talking about. There is no enhanced bookmark search feature on FF3. I need this to search descriptions, not just the bookmark name. I can't believe this isn't integrated into FF3 already!!! Seriously, WTF.
I did not find a way in FF3 to search for bookmark descriptions, so maybe Larry Becque could help here.....
This add-on is no longer needed in FF3. I used it for a long time with FF2 and lower versions but now FF3 has incorporated this functionality and more. Mayer Bassirat and others; just try upgrading to FF3 and you will see.
To Mike Dude: I'm talking about the standard search feature built into FF3. It works very well and searches everything with the unfortunate exception of the description field. However, in FF3 the proper way to ID bookmarks is with 'tags' and if you put these descriptions into tags the standard search will find them.
This add-on is desperately needed for FF3. It is the #1 reason I have not upgraded from FF2
I have tried many of the bookmark extensions for FF3 plus any tips I've seen and none of them work like this extension. This is the main reason I haven't completely switch to FF3 yet. Everything else is far too cluttered. This makes the bookmarks simple and easy to find, even with massive amounts of sub-folders.
Why doesn't anyone update this to work the new bookmarking system? This only gets 4 stars for now since it's not updated. It's very irritating that with all the people who understand how to make/edit extensions that no one has bothered to update one of the most useful add-ons ever. (-_-)
Edited to add: There are many of us who have several MB of bookmarks in FF2. Expecting us to go through every one of them and replace the descriptions with tags is not a valid option. There is a big difference between "description" and "tags". Being able to search the description field is much more useful than searching for tags anyway.
Why hasn't anyone who knows how to make extensions updated this? (T_T)
Love this extension.
Although, FYI, I was going to submit a feature request for an option to get the Bookmarks path to search results (*not* the URL, but where the result *is* in your bookmarks folder) until I noticed the screen shot of the "all" search results window.
The "Show Bookmark Path" button does *not* appear if you do not search in "all"!
I.e. searching in "name," "description," etc. does *not* show the "Show Bookmark Path" button below your search hits.
Thought that might be useful for someone else looking for that option.
For all those like me who’re waiting for a Firefox 3 version… Just realised that in FF3 you can easily do without an add-on. Simply open the page from your bookmark. In the Location Bar, click on the yellow star and it tells you which folder the bookmark is in.
Bookmark Search for ff 3.??
Did some one forget something it's not here must have help.
I recently upgraded to FF 3.0.1 and was saddened to discover that this wonderful extension is not compatible. It is the only extension that I know of that will tell me the complete path of a bookmark.
Yep. We're ready for a version compatible with FF 3.
Ready to make yourself famous, Humberto?
This works great and exactly as I would have designed it! Now I can get rid of a few duplicate bookmarks and can easily see how my grand scheme sometimes goes awry.
Someone please update this! We really need this to work with FF3.0!
I've installed it, and it provides me with the path so that I can find any bookmark (and any duplicates) within my bloated, but very useful, Bookmark Manager.
Since I'm in the research business, the ability to compile and revisit specific web sites (by category) is essential!
That I can now keep that tool uncluttered, AND stop wasting time repeating searches, is a big new bonus.
Advanced Bookmark Search 0.3 works great!
Thank you Humberto Lezama.
After an XP reinstall *(again!) I wasn't sure which 'bookmark search' add-on I had used in the past. I now know after mistakenly trying the wrong one. the 'other' one. It makes it far to complicated with too much messing about and options when, all you want is to press 'Search', type your word in and then see results.
That is exactly what this add-on does.
It does it perfectly.
thanks. This is the best bookmark searcher fo firefox, no contest!
I find this quite useful. The search built in to Firefox does not identify the location of the bookmark. Of ten I remember enough about a site to find it with searh but do not know where in my hierarchy of bookmarks I have stored it. This extension lets me see where the bookmark is located so I can open its folder and see others in the same category or know where to add other similar bookmarks.
There's a few similar add-ons, but this one is extremely simple and to the point. Let's you click an advanced search button at the bottom of your bookmarks that corresponds to pre-entered terms you input in your keywords, descriptions, etc. There are others that do the same, but they are so annoying because they make the approach too fancy. The only issue I can suggest...when displaying results of your term search, it should allow you to 'open in a new tab' rather than just 'open in a new window'...but other than that, it's good.
