AdvertBan doesn't have all the features of Ghostery & Adblock Plus combined but it does do one thing that they don't very well which is not cause crazy memory leaks in Firefox ballooning memory usage to huge amounts over long browsing sessions, yes some of these leaks are Firefox itself but Ghostery and Adblock Plus are also responsible (even in the latest Aurora 8.x builds that fix some of the Firefox leaks).
The UI is pretty simple to use and it is faster but doesn't offer a whole lot of control over what you block & can whitelist like any https site for instance.
If your tired of memory leaks or websites catching on to Adblock Plus (giving you annoying warnings) then AdvertBan is a credible alternative.
Thanks for fair review :)
I can't believe all of you cheap skates on here complaining about $7.99 fee. How much do you spend at Starbucks every year? And, it's only a suggested fee, it's not mandatory
I don't know if this is the original ad blocker. They used to call it Ad-Ban, not AdvertBan. The one I have , AdBan, seems to work pretty well with the exception that it blocks stuff you want on some websites. Sometimes it blocks the scripts for picture loading which you may want on some sites. It also blocks some java script for buttons that you might want. I have noticed this on my Yahoo account -- It will block some links. This is easily fixed by just clicking it off, but if you forgot what is causing the blockage of things you want, you might get a little frustrated.
> I don't know if this is the original ad blocker. They used to call it Ad-Ban, not AdvertBan.
AdvertBan is the new name of AdBan.
> it blocks stuff you want on some websites
This should be definitely fixed. Could you send urls for broken webpages to firstname.lastname@example.org or file a bug via AdvertBan's menu?
> This is easily fixed by just clicking it off
Note that AdvertBan can be switched off on a per-site basis. See http://www.advertban.com/ff/help#how_to_whitelist_ads .
Advertban.com says it's the best ad blocker ever. Wrong! It's AdvertAllow! "There are no technical limits on the size of AdvertBan's ad filter database. This means that AdvertBan can be customized for each distinct site on the web in order to achieve perfect ad blocking results on unlimited number of sites. " Very wrong seruosly. On Alexa.com it didn't block sponsorwd links so I don't hav eto recomend this addon.
AdvertBan didn't block sponsored links on Alexa.com, because they weren't reported. Thanks to your report these links have been blocked.
Sorry, just uninstalled. 1) Didn't block much of anything. I had to re-install adBlock Plus to "help" AdBan - something wrong with that picture. 2) Any "ad blocker" that comes complete with it's own adware is lame and offensive. 3) Any addon for a FREE piece software that has the nerve to charge for itself is lame and offensive. (FYI Making addons for free software is just to "get your name out there" charging makes you a leech.)
Adblock Plus can be easily used by grandma as well, it's free and it will never ask for money :)
Good luck with setting up proper ad filter subscription lists under AdBlock Plus.
I started using this extension since Adban v1.5.1 & it was good. But now it is getting annoying with a pop-up page asking for money every time I use FF.How do I get Advertban to ban Advertban's advert?Otherwise I will have to switch back to Adblock (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/) or again start using Blocksite Extension (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/blocksite/ ) as well to block the ad page.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To AdvertBan (Developer),
Thank you for your response, further to which I have now recommended AdvertBan to friends via the "http://www.advertban.com/ff/recommend" page & have also increased the rating to 3*.
If the advert stops, as you say it should, I will up my rating to 5* & it will become a "must have" Extension & I thank you for that.
> But now it is getting annoying with a pop-up page asking for money every time I use FFThe "annoying" pop-up page shows up only once per two days after the trial period is over. And it can be easily suppressed. Read the answer on the following question.\
> How do I get Advertban to ban Advertban's advert? You can freely use third-party add-ons for blocking this advert if you wish. But it would be better if you'll recommend AdvertBan to your friends via the http://www.advertban.com/ff/recommend page. After that the advert won't disturb you again.
After having seen this add-on I wonder and ask what Mozilla checks!
Could you elaborate on why you don't like AdBan? This can help improving the add-on in the future.
CAUTIOUSLY ALL!!! This addition extorts from you money!!!!

If you have problems with AdBan, then don't hesitate filing a bug at http://code.google.com/p/ad-ban-extensions/issues/entry or sending a message to email@example.com . I'll be more than happy to help you.
AdBlock Plus is still tops. I've used it for several years now. When you can put the same work in that AdBlock Plus did and for the same price, you might have a winner. AdBlock Plus has some add-ons that will kill ads that Adban wont. Sorry, greed kills. Its sad that people will pay so much for simplicity.
> AdBlock Plus is still tops.
Each add-on has its strengths and weaknesses. AdBan is based on more advanced technology, which makes it faster and perfectly scalable comparing to AdBlock Plus. Read more at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/adban/developers and http://www.advertban.com/ff/help#why_adban_is_better_than_competing_addons .
> AdBlock Plus has some add-ons that will kill ads that Adban wont.
Report these ads, so they will be eventually blocked by AdBan. See http://www.advertban.com/ff/help#how_to_report_ads for details.
> Sorry, greed kills.
Agreed - greed kills. So why you cannot afford so low cost for AdBan? :)
This is an adware/nagware
AdBan shows the 'buy' page once a day. You can buy AdBan's lifetime support in order to suppress the 'buy' popup or switch to free ad blockers anytime you wish.
Read also http://www.advertban.com/ff/help#why_paid for more details on why AdBan became paid.
Not useful at all, IMO.
With this addon I actually see the ads while they are loading, then they just being hidden. I don't want to see ads, that's why I'm installing adblocking addons...
Ads can be loaded only if the corresponding ad filter isn't loaded yet from the server. After that AdBan blocks ads before they start loading.
AdBan loads ad filters on demand, while other ad blockers keep the whole ad filter list in memory, even if only 1% of these filters are actually used. Large ad filter lists with a lot of unused filters can considerably slow down browsing speed.
I'd used AdBan in the past. It was a decent add-on. Had this been an EARLIER version of this add-on, I would've given it 4 stars.
AdBan is now a PAID add-on.
Nothing wrong with that, per se. I DO support them.
However; this latest iteration comes with ANNOYING NAGWARE., and, in my book - that's a no-no.
I wouldn'te have even written this 'review,' had not the AdBan NAGWARE not asked me to.
So - AdBan, this is what you get - and deserve.
AdBlock Plus (Which I DO support!) is tops on my list. I've used it for several years now - stick with ABP. NoScript. Not AdBan.
First of all, read what does adware mean - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adware . AdBan isn't adware, because it doesn't show you ads - it blocks all the ads instead :)
> However; this latest iteration comes with ANNOYING NAGWARE., and, in my book - that's a no-no.
If you started using AdBan before June 2011, then send your user_id from the http://www.advertban.com/ff/user_status page to firstname.lastname@example.org in order to suppress the 'buy' popup. Otherwise you can just pay for AdBan in order to remove the nag window, which appears only once a day. Btw, the price of AdBan's lifetime support is lower than the price for cheap fast food :)
Nagware. $9.99 and you're competing with Adblock Plus? Might want to rethink the nagware. And the price. And how good AdBan is in comparison to a free product...
You can always switch to Adblock Plus if you think AdBan's cost is too high for you. Btw, the cost for lifetime support is lower than two pints of beer in the nearest pub.
AdBan 1.8.1 is a commercial extension now. You must pay $9.99 to use it. Out of my extensions!!!
AdBan is free if it was installed before June 2011. Moreover, it can be freely upgraded to the latest versions - see http://www.advertban.com/ff/help#pay_per_upgrade . Email to email@example.com if you installed AdBan before June 2011 .
Could you translate your review into English?
It looks like AdBan doesn't fit your needs. Read more about why was AdBan created at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/adban/developers .
It's more intelligent than others ad blockers, I used before Adblock plus, but in some pages didn't worked properly and AdBan solved those problems.
Thank you guys!
I resented being haunted by the popup window asking for a contribution. Then I read the other reviews, decided to donate. The developer takes pains to be responsive to users. And it melted my hard, unemployed little heart. I'm joining your happy little campers. Thanks.
Thanks for your support
а почему лор блочит? о_О
Because lor is considered harmful for young people :) Just a joke. It was blocked by accident. linux.org.ru has been unblocked on AdBan server. The corresponding change will propagate to all AdBan users in the next 48 hours.
You know the ads on Grooveshark that are thumbnail-size videos of random people dancing? Only this add-on gets rid of that and makes sure Grooveshark keeps the theme I've selected. Adblock Plus doesn't do any of that. This pretty much confirms to me that AdBan is better.
Excellent, much better than adblock plus
adban is much better than Adblock Plus, we've gone from ad blocker to adban...ad blocker that does not support Firefox 4
I am using the very latest version 1.7.2, which is available by clicking on 'View all Versions'. This is a very good ad-block add-on. In some situations Adblockplus fails to block all ads, for example on Facebook. So, this little add-on compliments Adblock plus. Yes, i run them alongside each other with no issues at all. Yes , you can try to block most of the ads manually by adding your own filters on ABP, but this has a tendency to block essential parts of the page too. So, where one fails, the other picks it up. Great work and i will continue using both...thank you!
good addon, alreeady reported a couple of sites....hope they are adblocked in the future :D
Nice improvement in the newest version. I notice it's blocking more ads than the previous. I see this add-on surpassing Adblock Plus easily. Thank you.
I got to know Ad-Ban when my usual "ad-banisher" had been disabled by Firefox 4.0. I admit I was skeptical of trying Ad-Ban, since my former add-on took no technical knowledge, just punching a button. I have little experience and no technical training in computers, having first laid hands on a computer after I reached my years of discretion at 65, 12 years ago. Ad-Ban, likewise, took no technical training, no additional downloads, no charts to check and uncheck, no other pop-ups which made me wonder if I had mischecked something crucial and would later on suffer the consequence. All I had to do was install, and as a courtesy to myself, I read the home page. I liked it. I also moved the "Report ads" and "AdBan on" from the customized icons in Firefox to the status bar, or whatever the new-fangled name for the Status Bar is. I like Ad-Ban because it has been entirely satisfactory and just plain works.
