I had modified in the past this AARDVARK Add-on to continue to use it with the Firefox.
But after Firefox 47, I can't use it because FF invalidate this Add-on...
I have blocked Firefox update on several PCs to continue to use several Add-ons not accepted by FF.
How can we do to validate it ?
This has worked perfectly for many years, and has required no maintenance. Writing a piece of software so elegant and successful that it requires no updates over many years is like a hole-in-one in golf - exceedingly rare, and as an aspiration it is practically hubris, but when you finally see it, it is something to be celebrated. So, if the maint takes a little vacation, it is well deserved. Why hasn't mozilla just signed it? Who can say. Thanks, for nothing moz.
I would consider donating if we could get this updated and maintained again. Combines with Remove it Permanently quite nicely
Modified the maxVersion on file install.rdf, then it work ok now.
Please make this available for Firefox 28.0.
Doesn't quite work on facebook ads
Ignore compatability warning, still going strong IMO
Жаль что Недоступно для Firefox 18.0
This tool is super useful. You can choose what to print by simply deleting anything from the page you do not like. It is terrible that it is available for FF 18. It is the add-on I used the most.
Awesome and usefull Addon, too bad is not available for firefox 17
HackTheWeb is a full replacement for aardvark:
The Web. Displayed Your Way.
Click to zap away rubbish.
Hack out the noise, read, print in peace.
* Save the changes to Stylish.
* Remove Sidebars & Ads.
* Widen Text.
* Black on White.
User empowerment (based on aardvark).
This is one of my favorite add-ons. I am using it in FF 13.0 with no problem. I used a standard hack to get it to install:
1. Downloaded and saved the xpi file.
2. Unpacked with WinZip.
3. Modified install.rdf to make a large number.
4. Re-zipped the files.
5. Changed the .zip extent to .xpi
Seems to work fine.
It is a real pitty this addon is not actively maintained anymore. But so far, it keeps working without any flaws on all Firefox/Iceweasel versions up to 10.0.3 (Iceweasel on Debian wheezy).
Does there exist any replacement that does (at least) the same as Aardvark to replace it once it stops working with a higher version of FF/IW?
USE ADD ON COMPATIBILITY REPORTER (link below) TO ALLOW YOU TO USE AARDVARK, WORKS ON FF 9.0.1 !!!
This addon is absolutely amazing!
IMHO this should be a standard feature in EVERY browser out there. THE MOST absolutely annoying aspect of the Internet is printing out useful information. Hours of messing about with offline editors, copy and paste into word processors, and whatever else people devise to cope with wasted ink and crappy HTML layouts found online.
Well, Aardvark is a simple, powerful, extremely effective method of dealing with all that fuss and bother. I HIGHLY recommend this for EVERYONE doing any research, studying, or just using the Internet as a library.
Still works fine with Firefox 7 if you have the Add-on Compatibility Reporter add-on installed.
Downrated for being abandonware. Developers, if you're going to abandon an extension, please hand it over to someone else. I have tried "Hack The Web" and it's a great replacement. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/hack-the-web/
As previously mentioned, this article tells you how to edit an add-on's max version.
It's a lot easier than it looks; takes about 30-60 seconds.
1. Download the aarvark add-on
2. Open it with 7-zip (free) or another archiver
3. Extract "install.rdf" and open it in notepad
4. Look for and change the version number to whatever you want.
5. Save and replace it back in the archive
6. Install it in firefox
Almost easier than using Aardvark itself!
Works with any add-on / extension too.
This is a brilliant extension, offering functionality which I for one would hate to be without for even a day. Since we're all upgrading to Firefox 5 round about now, and Aardvark is currently incompatible, if you are reluctant to install a modified alternative version then why not use the developer's own Aardvark bookmarklet, which works perfectly fine with Firefox 5? It's at http://karmatics.com/aardvark
For people who do not want to change the settings of the add-on themselves as described below by some other reviewers: Nicorac has published on April 16 an already adapted version of Aardvark that works with Firefox 4. He provided a link in his posting. He says that he has only changed the version info as described by many people in their reviews. You cannot install from the .xpi file directly, you have to open the file from Firefox 4 (Firefox button > New tab > Open file).
If you to want to absolutely follow the safest route, because the adapted version has not been approved by Mozilla, you have to make the small change yourself. I have found the instructions for changing the version info in some of the reviews below a little too short and looked elsewhere. I discovered that more detailed instructions can be found at: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Editing_an_add-on_to_change_its_compatibility.Following step 4 of those instructions change 3.6.* to 4.0.*
In order to download the xpi file instead of installing it from the Mozilla page (which will fail in Firefox 4), rightclick on the downloadlink for Aardvark and select "save target as".
Hope this helps.
Hope for the update version for ff4
Worked! I add the property "extensions.checkCompatibility.4.0" at "about:config" setting it to "false". After it, I gotta install.
Thanks for the tip!
On http://karmatics.com/aardvark/ it says "Aardvark was created by Rob Brown (email@example.com) and now belongs to vark.com." but http://vark.com is a completely unrelated "social search engine", also called Aardvark, that was acquired by Google. Is this a trademark issue? Anyway, I'm glad the malware block went away. I'm using Aardvark with Fx 4 and so far I haven't had any problems.
please update for ff4!!
Excellent add-on. Although this may be a lot of work for you, please make it available for Firefox 4.0. Thanks.
If you're careful, you can go into 'about:config' in Firefox 4, searching for 'extensions.checkCompatibility.4.0' and setting it to 'false' to allow you to enable certain "incompatible" extensions. Aardvark DOES work fine in Firefox 4.0. Despite being seemingly-abandoned by the author, Aardvark is still my favorite extension of its type, making it easy to format a page for printing or screen captures.
