About this extension
GitHub Download Now adds a smart download control to public GitHub repositories.
It recommends the most suitable release asset for your operating system, CPU architecture and preferred package format; explains why it was selected; provides local installation guidance; lets you switch release versions; and can optionally watch selected public repositories for updates.
Version 1.1 adds bounded README-guided discovery. When a root README links to an important component such as an API, SDK, library or bindings directory, the extension may inspect a very small number of same-repository documents at the selected release tag. It never recursively scans the whole repository and never executes build commands.
GitHub connection is optional. Users can connect through GitHub's official Device Flow without sharing a password or browser cookies. The connection requests no OAuth scopes and is used only to raise the API budget for public release, documentation and update requests. The extension remains public-only, works without connection and does not access private repositories.
No telemetry, advertising, analytics, developer backend or AI service is used.
