Well done must-have add-on! Bewertet mit 5 von 5 Sternen

Perfect add-on. Restores functionality that was negligently removed from Thunderbird and replaces the poorly executed and diminished default filter and search feature.

But one minor annyoing thing Bewertet mit 4 von 5 Sternen

This is really a great add-on. It unifies the filter and the search so you have no redundancy with the search boxes, and you can either filter your e-mails or, if you hit enter, search everything for a specific word. Just wonderful.
Only annoying thing is, that when you backspace away the last character, the search box immediately loses focus. Thus it happened to me VERY often that I accidentally archived away e-mails, because I though I was still typing in the search box. Unfortunately I couldn't find any option to make this go away. Maybe I've just overseen something, I don't know, but it would be great if that one thing, and I presume it shouldn't be too hard to fix, could be addressed soon.

Thank you for a job well done on this add-on!

Thanks Qudeid for your feedback!

I tried the problem you report and I couldn't reproduce it. I have another version developed already but I couldn't upload it to AMO (here) still. It's on if you want (rename the file from .zip to .xpi and manually install it to Thunderbird selecting the option 'install from file..' on Add-ons tab).

If the problem still continues, please let me know it, here or on my email, twitter or opening an issue on

mixed results - seems to be a problem switching between filter and search modes

Bewertet mit 1 von 5 Sternen

I use Thunderbird at home and at work and sintalled this add-on at home only to try it out some months ago.

Month later hadn't really found it useful in any noticeable way alas. That is, I didn't miss it at work where I didn't have it and didn't notice myself using anything it provided at home.

No slur upon the add-on, just that it doesn't provide anything I seem to need right now.

I give it a one star rating though because of one surreptitious change that bugged me for months now had me scratching my head and frustrated and annoyed until today I finally diagnosed it. Disabling this add-on removed the problem.

The problem I had is that at work (no add-oine) I type into the global search box and press Enter and Thunderbird searches. I would come home and engage this habit and find that when I pressed Enter Thunderbird would not do a search, instead open the selected message for display.

This may be afeature or a bug, what I do know is that it was a surreptitious change in behaviour that caused me considerable background annoyance for months before I sat down and tried to diagnose it seriously. And that was, well, annoying ;-).

So read the offerings of this add-on again and wondered why I tried it. Still do. As I'm happy with the two boxes (Global search and quick filter) and don't need all these fancy options.

It may serve your needs and if so, I'm sure it will do it well, just be awarer that pressing Enter in your Global search box will no longer search. It may have an option to enable that again.

Hi Bernd,

I'm sorry the problem.

It sounds a bug, maybe in conflict with another extensions, because Unified Search was not created to do that (open first message on pressing Enter inside search box), and really don't happen to me.

The unique possibility to do that is being using the quick filter box, type something, 'press tab key' and then enter (with tab pressed, is normal that first message open, by thunderbird defaults).

It's really strange.

Let me one question: Did you use the Unified Search Widget -selecting it from the Customize window-, hidden the default Thunderbird boxes in the options? (is more usable than default boxes, use less space -than quick filter bar-, have shortcuts and both filtering and search from one place). Is using that where more of features of this extension can be used.

Of course, the extension is for that who use shortcuts, combined filtering and search very often; or who use a small screen, like in a netbook.

I'm sorry the problem, it's very unusual.
If you can provide some information, like version, system, other extensions used, or console error messages, maybe I can help you, if you are interested.

Thanks for the feedback,

Really great Add-On! Bewertet mit 4 von 5 Sternen

Thank you, absolutely smooth integration of the quick filter options …
I'm wondering if it is working together with Expression Search Add-On in the future?

working great but shortcut Bewertet mit 4 von 5 Sternen

this addon really helps reducing the not logical duplicity of search boxes. works really fine, but I have found problems with the shortcut (it just not work under TB8 neither TB9). I can still click on it and write the search, but I was wondering if the shortcut issue could be solved, plus it would be great to leave it configurable.

Hi again Pancheto,

*** Edited: New version 0.6.4 already available at AMO solves this problem. Please, if work for you let me know it. Thanks for the Feedback!

** Edited: I just solve the problem! I had uploaded the new version at AMO (here) but needs some time to be reviewed by Mozilla Editors and be automatically updated; if you want use the new version now, you can download it from project page at
As you can see here in the extension info, the page at is the official web page of the project.
Enjoy it!

I know this use since today! I just open an issue in my 'issues tracker' at github ( about this.

Shortcut was working well in all versions previous Thunderbird 8: the problem is that in that version, Mozilla developers decide use the shortcut Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+K for the standard Quick Filter box (what I don't understand is why they set 2 shortcuts for the same, because Ctrl/Cmd+F open the Quick Filter box two, like in previous versions); this shortcut was used by me in Unified Search to focus the Unified Search Widget.

I'm wondering by this change at Thunderbird, and I'm just coding to solve it: the easiest way is to provide another shortcut for the widget, but I'm trying to find a workaround to do work the same shortcut (because previous users and me are accustomed to this shortcut ;-).

Thanks for Feedback,

thanks for additional comments/instructions. I think I was expecting other function/s and/or different logic in operation of the add-on. Apologies for any confusion.

More about missing Labels Bewertet mit 5 von 5 Sternen

Hi Iago,

I discovered that the labels are only missing when I have set the toolbar to icons only. If I change the toolbar to icons and text, then the labels are there.

I'd really like to see the labels for Unified Search even if I have the toolbar icons set to icon only.

Also, when the toolbar is set to icons only, there are NO icons for the selectors (Sender, Recipients, etc) and no tooltips for them either.

Thanks Tanstaafl_bh, is very helpful your comment.
I just was setting up an account at where host this extension with source control and a simply issues-tracker. I open an issue with your problem:
I published too an email support ( and site support ( in the extension info for better conversations about problems (comments here are welcome and useful, but not good for conversations). Use it when consider.
When I get more free time, I will work on it.

Very handly plugin. Found a little bug, but didn't find how to properly report it, so doing it here:Plugin does not search recipients in Sent folder, I changed one line and it works now:document.getElementById("qfb-qs-recipients").observes = "usb-qs-recipients";TOdocument.getElementById("qfb-qs-recipients").observes = "usb-qs-recipient";(removed s from usb-qs-recipients)TB 3.1.13, US 0.6.0, Windows 2000 SP4P.S. Sorry for newlines - apparently after editing system removes newlines :(

After uninstall/reinstall all seems to work fine. Yes, I upgraded recently FB to 3rd version and I was using Quick Folder before that.

Hi Marrtings,

Thanks for the info and bugfix, but I was unable to reproduce the problem, and I check out the code in the 'unifiedsearch.xul' file, the toolbarbutton element ID is 'usb-qs-recipients', with 's', because of this in 'unifiedsearch.js' file I reference to this name (whit 's'; the another 'usb-qs-recipient' doesn't exists!); Please, can you check if in your 'unifiedsearch.xul' file the 'id' attribute have the value 'usb-qs-recipient' or 'usb-qs-recipients'? Can you (previous backup of your modified extension files) reinstall last version and confirm the bug? I did my checks after download and install last version in AMO, to avoid differences between my local copies and public copies.
Maybe, your problem yet exists but have different source, like an 'out-of-sync' between Unified Search widget and Quick Filter toolbar (like happen to the user tanstaafl_bh).

Anyway thanks for all,

clear button please Bewertet mit 4 von 5 Sternen

I really like this (on TB 3.1 so far) as I always confused the new global search with the one below.
I do really wish for a clear button (and possibly also a 'read/unread only'-button, as the current one is hidden in the QuickFilter bar and needs two clicks to activate, even if I stop using the quickfilter,

Diese Bewertung wurde für eine vorherige Version des Add-ons (0.5.0) abgegeben.

Hi sejtam,
I already have a version prepared to be uploaded that includes the clear button, I only need do some tests before publish it -specially on Thunderbird 5.0-; but remember, you can press 'Esc key' twice in current version to clear the search/filter text (first 'Esc key' pressed) and the filter options (second 'Esc key') quickly.
The 'read/unread only'-button (and other quick filter options) already are available under the widget 'options menu' (last button in the widget, or pressing the 'down key' when the focus is on the widget); this options menu have two visual modes: 'menu' (default) and 'bar'; 'menu' needs you click on it (or press 'down key') to see the options; 'bar' is showed auto when you enter on the widget (you can enabled clicking on the menu first option 'convert into a horizontal bar' and restore the menu mode clicking on the 'down arrow button' on the bar); I'm thinking to set 'bar' mode the default in newer versions; in both modes, if the options popup is opened you have shortcuts to quickly enable/disable filter options: Alt+U for toggle 'unread/read-only'. You don't need use quickfilter bar at all (mm.. only there are an option not available in Unified Search Widget: quick filter per specific tags, is on my 'to-do' list).

Thanks for the feedback,

This is a great add-on, and a must-have for those of us who enjoy the vertical view. The built-in search filters become invisible in this mode, but this provides a nifty work-around that even improves the functionality of my searches!

Great for Searching and Filtering Across Multiple Accounts Bewertet mit 5 von 5 Sternen

This add-on does just what I was looking for! I needed the ability find and see in one place all emails that I had starred regardless of account, and by using the Unified Folders view, then selecting the "Star" Quick Filter, all of the emails showed up in one pane. This has made Thunderbird so much more useful!

Hi lagoSRL. With regards the option to clear the search bar...

'Mouse Click / Keyboard 'hot-keys'...very subjective and each to their own. IMHO I think providing mouse click options has a higher priority than keyboard hot-keys with 'the modern average user' in mind. So your point about not being intuitive is really the issue, not the preference. Personally I would really like to see the 'clear button' - just habit! Thanks though, it's very useful.

Much better! Bewertet mit 4 von 5 Sternen

Much better than the TB 3.1 implementation
Bascally it puts the Quick Filter bar functionality up on the Mail Toolbar so it is always accessible without having to open it up or without it taking up more vertical screen space.

Nicely improved search functions Bewertet mit 5 von 5 Sternen

I have been hoping for improvements in TB's search function for quite a while. The is a significant improvement in search usability. THANK YOU!

A nice cosmetic improvement would be a searchbar that expands as you type, similar to the function of the Firefox extension "Searchbar Autosizer".

Diese Bewertung wurde für eine vorherige Version des Add-ons (0.4.3) abgegeben.

First, thanks for the feedback. The extension "Searchbar autosizer" seems good for Firefox but Thunderbird have a built-in autosizer behavior (different to that extension): when more icons are added to the toolbar, searchbox size decrease; when more space available, searchbox is bigger. I think this behavior is enough and works good, but if you know some cases in that this fail or is have problems please tell me!

Great first help for frustrated TB 2 lovers who dislike the new search stuff in 3.1. Thank you very much! Makes TB 3.1 at least usuable after all!

I just wonder if it would be possible to add an option to turn the global search box into the old quick search box, i.e., bring back the feature to select filters with a drop down menu from the search field itself,i.e., dismissing the search bar completely.
Because when it jumps in now it still takes a lot of space and this is not so good on small laptop screen (we disabled the tab bar for that reason).

Do you think this could be done as an additional option? I've no idea how difficult it is to write such an extension, so maybe I'm asking for sth. impossible...

I will try to implement the Bug 570815 mockup

Thanks Frank, I read your comments at bugzilla also about your experience with my extension, and your replies to another users trying to explain how 'Unified Search' works. I appreciate it (and specially because I express myself badly in English ;-)
Note that in release 0.4.3 I solved one bug commented at bugzilla: the global search box must be hidden if Thunderbird option 'Enable global search and indexing' is disabled plus Unified Search option 'Enable filtering from search box' is disabled too (this two features disabled means that search box is not needed), and two bugs more about persistent filters (more info in the release notes).

Currently, I don't want modify the current global search with more functionality (like the TB2-style drop-down list) for simplicity, and the 'Auto-show filter bar' option was an easy&quickly mode to allow use the extra filtering features (you can disable the 'auto-show' and open it manually only when needed) but I'm thinking in create another standalone 'box' in the toolbar like proposed in mockups of Bug 570815, with both global search and filtering features; and the 'standard' global search box and filter box&bar may be hidden. I think is the best solution.

Thanks for the feedback,
