Transmaker

This is by far the best way to translate selected text! Bewertet mit 5 von 5 Sternen

I'm using this older add-on because I can't get it's successor to operate at all for me.

These are the only add-ons I've seen that preserve the markup (thus structure, format, links, etc.) while translating the selected text itself!

If you want to translate an entire page instead, you can use S3.Google Translator or gTranslator, which also preserve the markup while replacing the text inline within the page (not making you go to the google translate site).

Now if we could only have a single add-on that can do both in this way (selected text and full page).

Google Translator for Firefox

Bewertet mit 3 von 5 Sternen

Works as advertised. Auto-detects the original language. I like the fact that it translates the selected text in place by replacing it with its translation (although this loses all formatting of that text). The whole-page translate feature sends you to the google translate site just like a dozen other translation bookmarklets and add-ons do.

S3.Google Translator

the best translation add-on, period Bewertet mit 5 von 5 Sternen

By far the best translation add-on among quite a quite a few that I've tried. When translating the entire page, it does so in place, like Google Chrome does, rather than redirecting you to the google translate site where your page is framed and may lose functionality. It even automatically translates any new text that appears dynamically on the page (ajax etc.). And you can hover to get original text where you can see alternative translations of the pieces, just like in Google Chrome or in the translate-some-text feature on google translate site.

If you want a simpler add-on for similar page translation only, try gTranslator by GHR, which, however, requires that you explicity click to translate each page. There's a bookmarklet that does similar to gTranslator (from http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2009/11/google-translation-bar.html ).

All appear to be based on the old google toolbar translate feature and invoke similar code from the google translate api site. All of these use the unsupported google translate public api, so they may stop working at some point, but in the meantime they're great.

I would love an option to invoke this automatically on *every* site except those specifically excluded, but if they are detected as already being in the target language then do nothing.

Unfortunately, the page translate feature of this add-on is blocked by Flashblock.

gTranslator

great add-on Bewertet mit 5 von 5 Sternen

Awesome. It still translates entire page in-place better than almost any other translation add-on. It doesn't redirect you to the google translate site where your page would be framed and may lose functionality.

It even automatically translates new text that appears dynamically on the page (ajax etc.). And you can hover to get original text where you can see alternative translations of the pieces, just like in Google Chrome or in the translate-some-text feature on google translate site.

S3 Google Translate add-on is similar but has more features (such as automatic translation of sites you've visited before, and text snippet translation features) and has been updated more recently. Still, they both deserve 5 stars.

There's a bookmarklet that does something similar to this add-on (from http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2009/11/google-translation-bar.html ).

All appear to be based on the old google toolbar translate feature and invoke similar code from the google translate api site. All of these use the unsupported google translate public api, so they may stop working at some point, but in the meantime they're great.

Unfortunately, translation by this extension is blocked by Flashblock.

I would love to see an option to invoke this automatically on *every* site, but when it's detected as already being in the target language then do nothing.

BTW to nirvin, go into the add-on's options to enable toolbar icon, add-on bar icon, and/or context menu option. For toolbar icon you might have to right-click-->Customize and drag it from the tool palette to a toolbar.

Online Translator Toolbar

Bewertet mit 2 von 5 Sternen

No language detection, page translation simply sends you to the usual translation site with your page framed and semi-functional (unlike S3.Google Translator or gTranslator or Google Chrome which translate the current page in place). PROMT service broken for page translation. Too complicated to set translation (from and to) separately for the 4 tools (page, selection, clipboard, and entry). On the plus side the choice of translation services and the ability to move the buttons to another toolbar are nice.

Youtube Video and Audio Downloader

good for video but not convenient for audio download Bewertet mit 3 von 5 Sternen

good for downloading the full raw quality files. but the unconverted aac/m4a will not always play in itunes. audio conversion (e.g. to mp3) is a separate step.

Facebook Disconnect

prevents sign-in on pcworld.com Bewertet mit 3 von 5 Sternen

Good idea and good add-on. But while Facebook Disconnect 2.1.3 is enabled, I can't login to pcworld.com. All their social media icons are missing on the login overlay, which I understand, and of course I can't login using my facebook id. But the problem is that I can't even login using my pcworld.com ID which should be independent of facebook or the others. I looked at support site but I'm not willing to register there to post on the forum so I had no choice but to post this yere.

Tab notifier

amazing: works great, even for my non-standard chat client Bewertet mit 5 von 5 Sternen

I didn't think it would work for a web-based custom chat client developed internally in my company, but it did! I think this is a better solution than Tab Badge because you don't have to have tabs or windows open or visible in order to be notified.

VTzilla

Very useful security addon for downloads; has some limitations Bewertet mit 4 von 5 Sternen

Very useful for pre-screening downloads. Initially it just gives you information based on the site. But if you're sending the actual download file URL, you can then click "Downloaded File Analysis" in the result to get an actual multi-engine antivirus scan of the file itself before you download it yourself!

Aside from the obvious benefits of not having to download and then upload a file to VirusTotal, this also avoids the possibility that you might inadvertently upload a private file to VirusTotal. For example a file with your personal information that you were able to download from a site while logged into your account. By sending such a file to virustotal, you are in effect releasing it to a couple of dozen antimalware companies, which you might want to do. If using this extension, VirusTotal will only be able to access public URLs so you don't have that risk.

Sometimes it doesn't work if the "download" URL merely redirects to the actual file URL, or if it uses parameters and/or no explicit file extension. It would be nice if it could be smarter about those.

I hide the annoying toolbar. Unfortunately you can't drag its buttons or fields onto another toolbar, but I get the same functionality with two bookmarklets.

It would be nice if we could right-click on an existing download in the download manager and send its original URL directly to VirusTotal. In the meantime we can right-click on the download and Copy Download Link and paste it into the vtzilla toolbar field or an equivalent bookmarklet prompt field.

Also it would be nice if we could automatically send every download URL to virustotal while downloading it, if we don't choose to explicitly send it to virustotal before downloading. Better for virustotal to check it while or just after downloading than not at all.

How about checking the current page URL automatically in the background?

Maybe checking a link URL automatically while hovering over it for a bit? Or at least automatically checking every distinct *site* linked to on the current page (check with a site-level URL).

RefControl

slows down firefox & makes it unresponsive for several seconds at a time Bewertet mit 1 von 5 Sternen

Yikes, even changing the options of other add-ons took a long time so long as this one was installed. Also what I was really hoping for was the ability to blacklist the "from" site from sending the referrer. For example I don't want google to send the referrer (especially the search terms!) when I follow a result link (I can't find a way to do this other than to use https google).

Side Tabs

great, except where are the buttons I'd dragged onto my tab bar? Bewertet mit 4 von 5 Sternen

I like this because it can co-exist with Vertical Toolbar together on the left side, unlike some other vertical tab bar add-ons. Great that it's restartless! But I've dragged some buttons onto my tab bar and, just as with Vertical Tabs (by philiKON) they are hidden while using this extension. Most other extensions of these types display the additional buttons, although what I'd *really* like is if the extra buttons (non-tabs) could be displayed side-by-side horizontally within one or more rows within the side tab bar rather than one above the other.

Vertical Tabs

nice but hides other buttons i've dragged onto the tab bar Bewertet mit 3 von 5 Sternen

I like this because it can co-exist with Vertical Toolbar together on the left side, unlike some other vertical tab bar add-ons. But I've dragged some buttons onto my tab bar and they are hidden while using this extension. I see them at the bottom only temporarily while doing Customize. I love the fact that these extra buttons appear next to each other horizontally within the vertical tab bar, but now if I could only get them not to disappear! I'd like to see them at the top. Side Tabs is very similar to this add-on, but Restartless.

Compact Menu 2

this addon blocks editing a bookmark while adding it Bewertet mit 2 von 5 Sternen

This was a great addon, but it breaks bookmarking in recent versions of Firefox (15 & probably many others). I even made a brand new empty profile with *only* this single addon (no conflicts possible) and it still won't put up the bookmark editing dialog. A bookmark gets set but no dialog to edit it. See the Support site -- this issue has been open for 7 months without comment from the developer.

Is there anyone out there who can please make a new version of this addon that doesn't break bookmarking?

FireDownload

not working at all (ff 18) Bewertet mit 1 von 5 Sternen

sounded like a great idea, but seems not to download anything at all when enabled. somebody please fix this addon or make a new one similar to it!? also often tries to give the file an invalid name (contains '?') when you try to download. Why isn't this sort of transparent download acceleration built into firefox?

PayPal Instant Transfer Zapper

not working Bewertet mit 1 von 5 Sternen

doesn't seem to do a thing on current v. of firefox. my paypal still defaults to checking account and no dialog box ever appears.

SSL Button

nice but red button too alarming... Bewertet mit 4 von 5 Sternen

[MY APOLOGIES: when I foolishly tried to consolidate my original review with my later comments replying to developer, this apparently deleted the the developer's reply as well!]

Having a RED icon just because an https version of the site exists is too alarming for some users, and we don't want to numb them to red icons so that they ignore it when WOT, LinkExtend, Webutation, or other addons show a red icon.

Maybe use red only if the user has previously visited the https site, which indicates that he may have intended to do so this time. If I've never used the https version of google, I don't want to be so strongly told that it exists, though some less-alarming indication would be useful.

I do like the idea that it identifies an https alternative version of the site without automatically redirecting you there like Find Https(?).

Actually the feature I like best is that the add-on helps warn you when you're on an https site with certificate problems even when you've already entered an exception for it into firefox. As soon as you add the exception, most other ssl addons treat it as being just as safe as a site with no issues at all. Calomel (?) also warns of similar, but it is even more alarmist in displaying a huge blood-red icon even when the site merely isn't using the latest and greatest cryptographic strength, which isn't nearly as dangerous as a potential phishing site.

EDIT: THE REST OF MY REVIEW HERE IS MY RESPONSE to developer's reply down below.I've added a star for your prompt response and explanation.

Andrew, good points. But it isn't necessarily *less* dangerous to submit information insecurely just because there is *no* obvious ssl version of the page, so why "panic" only when there is an ssl version of the page. To me, a red icon should indicate whether there's unusual danger that you should look at carefully before doing *anything* on that site.

If the danger specifically relates to submitting sensitive information, I think any indication of this should ideally be at the input fields instead -- where did I see a browser that makes the field background a different color when it's secure? It would also be nice to know whether a secure version *exists*, but this part should look too alarming or it just desensitizes us to bigger dangers.

Certainly if you aren't on an open wifi hotspot, the biggest danger isn't that someone is going to steal the information that you're submitting to a legitimate site (and if it's a reputable site and there's no ssl version, they shouldn't be asking you for sensitive information anyway). The biggest danger is that you aren't on the site you think you're on, in which case switching to the ssl version of the same phony site isn't going to solve this problem! I would say that if you got there by following a link in email for example, why would the phisher have created an ssl version but directed you to the non-ssl one?

I wasn't suggesting that the add-on *store* any history, but only that you *read* history (if any exists) that's already been stored in the browser, to determine whether the user has visited the ssl version in recent months.

Also, how about trying to guess whether information is sensitive, like a password field or if the user is trying to submit a six-to-twelve digit (numeric) ID which may be an account number or social security/tax id or a date (possible birth date)?

I do like it to be obvious that one has a choice; maybe another option could be to automatically redirect to the https version the first time, or only when you've been to the ssl version before, but provide a button to go back to the non-ssl version (and remove the just-added ssl version from history so you won't go there automatically next time.)

[MY APOLOGIES: see my note all the way at the top above.]

Minimize On Start and Close

works great Bewertet mit 5 von 5 Sternen

This is better than minimize-to-tray because with minimize-to-tray we always have to look in 2 places to see whether we have firefox windows: the taskbar and the system tray. Mac OS-X made a combined bar and windows 7 (& vista) partly followed suit.

It would be nice if we had the option to allow us to close any windows normally *except the last remaining window* which would normally cause us to exit.

Another thing I'd love to see is a Restart-on-Close. When you close all your windows and firefox would normally exit, this is a perfect time to Restart firefox and when it comes back up I'd want it to start minimized so in effect it looks like you've simply minimized it but in fact it restarted first. The benefit is that it clears out unneeded memory from firefox and it often runs more smoothly than if you've been keeping it running continuously. It should be the session-preserving restart like the one offered by the add-on manager (or by justin Ƨullivan's "Restart Firefox" addon but not most others), so it preserves tabs and also session cookies, etc.

Togglify Add-on Toggler

good idea that works as advertised, but a little untidy Bewertet mit 4 von 5 Sternen

It's good to have a way to toggle "restartless" addons off-and-on, on the fly without having to go to the addons manager page. This add-on creates a separate toggle button for each such add-on that you have, and you can drag some (or all) of these to a toolbar using "Customize". If you have a lot of addons it sort of clutters-up the Customize Toolbar button collection that you drag from. And if you drag more than a couple of them then it might clutter up your toolbar, too. Maybe better would be a button with a dropdown menu of add-ons that you can toggle. Or a submenu of the firefox main app button.

Website Standort + Länderinfo

useful add-on although it takes up too much space on the toolbar Bewertet mit 4 von 5 Sternen

This can help you see whether you're on the site you think you are by showing its country, organization, city, etc.

+ can show lots of useful info about this site at once
+ fast lookup (from NY, US anyway)
+ can drag it off the add-on bar onto another toolbar
- can't hide the big labels like "Country Name: " which take up way too much room on toolbar
- the info not being shown can't be viewed "on demand" (hover or click)
- doesn't show the "real" (reverse dns or canonical?) hostname of the site like the WorldIP or ShowIP add-ons.

This add-on is in my Collection "recommended security & privacy add-ons that are minimally-invasive" addons.mozilla.org/firefox/collections/dabruro/security
