Lightning

Cannot Import CSV Files Bewertet mit 3 von 5 Sternen

Lightning 5.4 will not import CSV files into Thunderbird 52. I encountered the most verbose and incomprehensible error message ever.

As a test, I manually created some events in Lightning and then exported them as a CSV file. When I deleted the calendar and then tried to re-import the saved CSV file, Lightning would not even import the file it just created!

Had to roll back to TBird 45.8 and Lightning 4.7.8. All is well once again.

This site claims that Lightning 5.4 works with Thunderbird 52.0, but in practice, they do not seem to play well together yet. More work needed.

Curses on Comcast Bewertet mit 4 von 5 Sternen

Earlier this week, Comcast made changes to its email server. As usual with Comcast, the changes produced little or no apparent benefit to users. Not only did the changes wreak havoc with certain email clients like Thunderbird and SeaMonkey by causing massive duplicate downloads, but X-notifier no longer provides alerts or displays Comcast email counts. Fortunately, clicking on X-notifier's Comcast link does still [sometimes] open the Comcast server.

However, I notice with alarm that the Comcast script (2014-05-16) is no longer present on the X-notifier site. I hope that means only that someone is working on a new replacement script and not that X-notifier will terminate Comcast support altogether.

Looking for reassurance that a new Comcast script will soon be forthcoming. Sure would like to see notification and email count restored for Comcast.

Walnut for Thunderbird

Where to begin? Bewertet mit 3 von 5 Sternen

Walnut for Thunderbird 2.0.32 is a step backward. The Add-ons Manager window is inexplicably now much too narrow. As a result, the printed description of each item is all scrunched up such that the content of each field intrudes on the columns of other fields. Had to shake my head at the claim of "improved main window styling." Certainly not the case with the add-ons manager window. And there is now so much wasted space to the right of the add-ons window. Please restore the full width display of previous versions.

Furthermore, this theme no longer plays nicely with the add-on T-Bird Titlebar Tweaker. The minimize button, close button, and other buttons in the upper right corner no longer function. I suppose the author of that add-on will be responsible for fixing that problem with a subsequent release, but I cannot help but ask: why is all this necessary? So many additional problems for so little net gain.

Unfortunately, this is becoming all too common with Mozilla products. After many years, I have finally dumped Mozilla's Firefox for Opera and Chrome. Guess I'll now have to start looking for an email alternative to replace Thunderbird. Sigh...

Gmail Problem Fixed! Bewertet mit 5 von 5 Sternen

No G-mail Notifications Bewertet mit 4 von 5 Sternen

Beginning with Firefox version 43, X-Notifier 3.5.18 no longer provides notification or counts of incoming Google mail. [OS: MS Windows 7 Professional 64-bit]

Access to each account still works fine: when I click on each account's icon, the account opens up just as it should. However, accounts with unread mail used to appear in the list in bold letters with the pending count to the right. Unfortunately, such features no longer appear for G-mail. I must now remind myself to manually visit each account periodically to check for new mail.

Option "Show labels" is checked and "Notify inbox only" unchecked for each account, same as always. Has worked fine for years, but there now appears to be a glitch with FF 43 (32-bit version). Bold lettering and numerical counts for Yahoo mail, Comcast mail, Twitter, and Facebook still show, just not for G-mail.

Thinking the problem might be the degree to which I have locked down Firefox, I tried three other browsers which I allow to function without limits. SeaMonkey behaved the same as Firefox: access fine, but no notifications. Interestingly, Avant browser (set to Firefox engine) worked fine on both counts. In fact, hovering the mouse over each link also displays the number of messages in both the Spam and Trash folders, a real plus. But in a perverse twist of irony, X-notifier in Google's own Chrome browser failed miserably in all functions for G-mail accounts!

X-notifier is still highly useful in providing access to all accounts under one umbrella. However, the lack of G-mail notifications in Firefox reduces X-notifier to a merely good add-on instead of the extraordinarily excellent add-on that it has been.

X-notifier has long been my most valued Firefox addon. Even with these new limitations, I will continue to use it often — but it sure would be nice if the full display features for G-mail could somehow be restored.

Lightning

No longer works with latest SeaMonkey release Bewertet mit 4 von 5 Sternen

I am a long-time user of Sunbird, so adoption of Lightning was a natural. I especially love the calendar file import feature that allows me to import calendar events downloaded from my children's school web site.

Alas, Lightning 4.0.2.1 does not work in the latest release of Sunbird 2.38. Even the usual trick of editing the install.rdf file within Lightning's .xpi file to increase the SeaMonkey maxVersion parameter failed to work. I had to roll back to SeaMonkey 2.35 to restore Lightning. Looking forward to an update to Lightning soon that works with latest SeaMonkey release.

Actually, this problem highlights the primary reason I still use Sunbird even though it has been discontinued: it is a stand-alone app independent of any parent framework like Thunderbird or SeaMonkey but has almost all of the same features as Lightning.

Facebook Misbehaving Bewertet mit 4 von 5 Sternen

Starting this past Monday, whenever I open Firefox v39.0, the Facebook entry in X-Notifier v3.5.9 is grayed out. If I click on that gray link, it throws me to the FB log-in page. If I then provide my user name and password, I am able to access Facebook.

If I then log out of Facebook, return to X-Notifier's menu, and click the "Check Now" option, lo and behold: the Facebook link becomes active again. Indeed, if I click on the newly active link, I am thrown into Facebook directly without the need to manually enter my user ID or password again. The Facebook link can be made to work, but only with a lot of rigmarole.

Something is obviously not quite right. Any chance of a new Facebook script to fix whatever quirk Facebook seems to have introduced to their sign-in process? Thanks in advance.

Aeon Clouds

Foiled by Firefox 38, Part Deux Bewertet mit 4 von 5 Sternen

Eureka! After much research and experimentation, I found that using about:config to set the value of "browser.preferences.InContent" to false displays Options in the old floating window and allows them to work in Aeon Clouds. False was apparently the default before Firefox v38, but FF 38 changes the default value to true and thus opens Options in a fixed tab that does not presently work in Aeon Clouds.

The new default value of true (tab) in FF 38 does work with Firefox's default theme and several other themes, but not Aeon Clouds. For those of us willing to accept Options in the old floating window (false), Aeon Clouds can be made to work in Firefox 38. Alas, users who want Options in a tab (true) must either switch to a new theme to stay in FF 38 or else roll back to FF 37 in order to keep Aeon Clouds.

Because of this shortcoming, I award Aeon Clouds four stars for now. If and when Aeon Clouds is modified to also allow Options to function in a tab (true), then it will get the five-star rating it so richly deserves.

Aeon Clouds

Foiled by Firefox 38 Bewertet mit 3 von 5 Sternen

I, too, encountered the failed Options menu with Aeon Clouds under Firefox v38. Default Firefox theme works fine. However, I rolled back to v37 just to preserve Aeon Clouds because I love it so much. Were it not for this glitch, I would award six stars!

Hope Aeon Clouds can be modified to work with versions of Firefox beyond v37. Would also love to know from "curmudgeon" or anyone else the details of exactly how to tweak about:config to restore old style (floating window) "Options" feature.

Flash Video Downloader - YouTube HD Download [4K]

Another reason to despise Mozilla's 6-week rapid release program Bewertet mit 1 von 5 Sternen

Concur with Sachin's post of 27 February 2015: Flash Video Downloader v7.1.2 operating in Firefox v36.0 no longer downloads videos. Rolled back to version 7.1.1 with same bad results. This is a terrific add-on when it works, but Flash Video Downloader in any version does not seem to play nicely with the latest Firefox v36.

Firefox's continual updates always seem to have adverse affects on add-ons by making it too hard for developers to keep up with changes. Fortunately, for anyone looking for alternatives, the add-on called DownloadHelper does still work in FF36.

Aeon Clouds

It's Baaack! Bewertet mit 4 von 5 Sternen

I had been using Aeon Clouds exclusively since January 2010 (v3.6) and quickly grew to love its calm, classy appearance. I was crushed when Firefox 29 was released and Aeon Clouds no longer displayed the tabs properly with Classic Theme Restorer installed and the "Tabs not on top" option selected. Much to my delight, the tabs have miraculously re-appeared with Aeon Clouds v7.2. Many thanks to the developer!

The only lingering deficiency: I would like to see the blue cloud pattern applied to the Add-on Bar at the bottom, but that's just nitpicking. So glad to have the basics back!

Comcast upsets the apple cart Bewertet mit 4 von 5 Sternen

I can access my Comcast e-mail by logging on directly to the Comcast site. I can download Comcast mail using my e-mail clients. However, beginning 12 May 2014, I can no longer access Comcast using X-notifier: not on Firefox, SeaMonkey, or Google Chrome.

Comcast has apparently done something that interferes with X-notifier. Probably time for an update to Comcast script 2013-05-13.

Cannot help but marvel at how the developer is able to monitor so many different software sites. Keep up the good work.

X-notifier (for Gmail,Hotmail,Yahoo,AOL ...)

About Face for Facebook Bewertet mit 4 von 5 Sternen

X-Notifier (v3.3.12) remains my single most essential Firefox add-on. Unfortunately, Facebook must have recently changed something to upset the apple cart. Facebook script 2013-10-28 no longer notifies users like it has for so long.

Hovering the mouse over the X-notifier button shows "Facebook (account-name): not checked" in red ink. Right-clicking the X-notifier button shows all Facebook accounts as grayed-out listings. Fortunately, clicking on those account names does successfully open each account, so X-notifier still has substantial value. However, the add-on no longer notifies users when unread Facebook postings are available.

Facebook has apparently done something that requires another tweak to the Facebook script. I can only shake my head in amazement and admiration at how the developer is able to keep abreast of so many different applications and the programming techniques required to access them. Hope this Facebook problem can be solved.

Varnished Chrome Bewertet mit 4 von 5 Sternen

I am thrilled that version 3.3.8 did indeed fix the Gmail 2-step verification in Firefox. Ironically, however, v3.3.8 still does not open Gmail in Google's own Chrome web browser. Sure would like to see that fixed, too.

A Truly Joyful Yahoo! Bewertet mit 5 von 5 Sternen

Yippee kay yay! Version 3.3.3 fixes all of the Yahoo problems. X-notifier now successfully scans Yahoo both on initial startup and with a manual scan (menu option "Check Now"). And everything works even for those of us who chose to stick with basic Yahoo instead of the new "full-featured" Yahoo. Can't ask for much more. Well done!

Not-So-Joyful Yahoo! Bewertet mit 4 von 5 Sternen

I read CPrebble's review of 16 June with great interest because I, too, am having problems with Yahoo, although of a slightly different nature. When I open Firefox, all the initial automatic scans in X-notifier work fine, except Yahoo's. Yahoo accounts remain grayed out, and no e-mail counts appear.

While a minor annoyance, it is not a fatal flaw. If I then run a manual check by clicking the "Check Now" menu entry, lo and behold: the Yahoo accounts are no longer grayed out, and the counts for unread mail suddenly appear.

So for new users who depend on Yahoo, don't give up on X-notifier if initial startup fails. Just run a manual scan; you should then be good to go.

For the benefit of RpD:
As I have stated before, this is a marvelous add-on. It must be a monumental chore to keep current with all the changes made by the numerous service providers, and I have nothing but admiration for the developer of X-notifier.

However, the first three or four times I had problems in the distant past, I did use the forum. Alas: I never had a single reply to any of my posts. In my experience, the forum simply has not produced results.

Since then, I have instead chosen to post reviews so that new users contemplating this add-on might become aware of the types of problems they might encounter so that they can make an informed decision. Sorry if that offends your delicate sensibilities.
