I don't see how to tell this add-on to reload a DIFFERENT icon for a given site if you don't like the BRIGHT YELLOW one it already generated for a site.
Great concept though.
You should allow us to recreate icons for a given site until we like one.
You can't. The shape and color of the icon is determined by an algorithm from the website's name, as explained in the add-on description. If you don't like the icon generated for a particular site, you can disable icon generation for that site in the preferences window of the add-on, and use another add-on (e.g. FavIcon Picker) to manually set a favicon for that site.
I got to my office PC with Waterfox x64 and IdentFavicon worked fine. Same add-ons. It must have been an old add-on left behind in the about:config junk of Waterfox.
Don't know why Google Chrome users put up with crappy favicon support. I suppose they have eagle eyes for text rather than the favicons (Chrome loses even the assigned site favicons - and people keep complaining to no effect).
I'm glad we got that sorted out! :-)
I'm not sure whey it doesn't work on my PC. I've disabled all other add-ons and IdentFavicon is the only one enabled. There's no Favicon generated for sites without one. I'm using Windows 7, FF 8.0.
You could try setting the extensions.identfavicon.debug config value to true (in the about:config dialog). Then identfavicon logs its activity in the error console. Please check its output there and post an error report in email. Thanks!
Thank you for your fast response, but then i don't know the Problem either. I use multiple Plugins and doesnt have the time to check all of them. But it is an cool addon, thanks for that good piece of software.
Greetings from Germany,

this is a really nice and well written addon. which makes tabbar much more interesting.
works with nightly as well, wonder why amo failed to mark it as compatible.
I was so glad to have found this "add on". It is so easy to use. I am enjoying having a "favicon" so that I can easily identify my bookmark tabs. It starts working after you go to the website. And, if on a page, you can right click and reload the "favicon". I find it very useful. I love it! Thank you for creating it!
How hard would it be to allow for custom icons to be set manually? It's nice having autogenerated ones, but for sites and servers that I use regularly that have either no icon, a confusing icon or an ugly one, I would prefer to specify my own.
I've used Favicon Picker, and now Bookmark Favicon Changer to set icons for single pages, but I'd also like to be able to set icons for entire sites.
This should be a relatively straightforward to do, and I've made the same suggestion to the developer of Bookmark Favicon Changer to suggest that you two team up and merge your code together to allow for site-wide custom icons. The hash-based ones would be used as a secondary measure, although I may revert to the add-on that just uses coloured squares as it's easier on the eye. But I definitely want to be able to use my hand-drawn icons across whole sites :)
Hello Daniel! The suggestion to allow manual picking of favicons has been made several times. I might do it eventually, however, I have very little time to spend on this add-on - most of this goes into keeping it up to date with the most recent firefox versions, and recently also into adding locales. Development of various new features is on my to do list.
Eye candy and helps to identify tabs and bookmarks.
Very simple and surprisingly effective solution to an annoying problem.
Simple and elegant solution to iconless bookmark & tabs.
Love it! Adds color & shape where there wasn't before! Makes my favorite sites that don't have a favicon that much easier to identify in my favorites bar! love it!
... except when it randomly generated a swastika symbol as a favicon. I know it's random, but is there ANY way to block that shape or swap it for something else if that happens?
Detecting swastikas in general is not easy. I added some code to block the generation of certain shapes that look like swastikas, but other combinations might also result a similar shape. Besides, except for the most trivial cases, what in your opinion "looks like a swastika" might not look like one at all for others. In my opinion, for example, it is pretty far fetched to say that your link resembles a nazi swastika. (Not any more than it resembles a green cross.) Anyway, if you don't like the icon for a particular site for any reason, you can always add that site to your exception list in the add-on preferences.
Easily recognizable? Well, all the generated icons have the same style. Only colors change. Better than nothing, but not really satisfying.
I like it. The designs remind me of flowers or something, but it makes it easy to identify websites that don't use a favicon
Perhaps you should add a link or a short summary of what an identicon actually is to the addon's page. You seem to be getting some feature requests that people wouldn't make if they knew what an identicon was.
Does what it says, and seems to work with some of the tab coloring extensions. Does not support offline files for some reason.
Hmm, I'm not sure what you mean by offline files. If you mean html pages saved locally and accessed via the file:// protocol, than sure, no favicons are generated for those, since the seed of the icon is the domain name. No domain name, no icon, its that simple. (Localhost, however, does get a favicon.)
It really resolved the problem of needed change the icon everytime you don't find a page with one. The color are great.
Would be nice if this allowed for user-specified icons.
For instance, my banks website has a favicon, which works fine. Their 'online banking' website is at a subdomain, and they forgot to put a favicon. I used another extension to manually choose the icon for the bookmark (copied it from their main site,) but would love to have it use the same icon when it was open in a tab. I found this and thought it would let me, and didn't realize it always used auto-generated one with no way to manually set an icon until after I installed it. Rather disappointed - I don't want a 'random' icon. I want to specify it.
I intentionally do not want to complicate this add-on with such features. Especially since other extensions, such as Favicon Picker, already do what you ask for.
Would you add first letter of the domain name too.
That would make it even more interesting.
Add the first letter to what? I'm sorry, but you need to be more specific.
I love having icons in my bookmarks and this generates them very nicely for site without. I have 15 ext and works great with all of them with no performance issues. Great work!
Thanks, very useful. I have a few sites I love but I hate the plain favicon. This addon actually chooses favicons that match the sites color scheme (I hope this was intentional and not just a coincidence). I also love that it does it's job automatically for sites without a favicon. Anyway, thanks a lot, I needed this.
I'm glad you like it. I'm afraid the choice of color is a coincidence, since all aspects of the icon are chosen pseudo-randomly based on the site's domain name. In this case, it seems the site's name and its color scheme harmonize :-)
I see no way to remove the icons. I've uninstalled the add-on and removed the bookmark, restarted firefox and add the bookmark again and it creates the favicon again. I would expect that icons created by this add-on will be removed when you do the above. I got tired of the fake icons that didn't really mean enough to me so I've removed it.
This feature is on my todo list. The problem is that Firefox API does not trivially support this. Anyway, your problem is that favicons are not only stored in the bookmarks but also in the BROWSING HISTORY. So in order to completely discard identfavicons, first delete the affected bookmarks, then wipe the browsing history (from "clear private data"), and then recreate the bookmark. (I think browser restart is not necessary.)
This AddOn seems to loop endless and very fast sending requests to favicons to web servers.
As we deactivated it, the logging stopped, as we reactivated it, the logging was running again. Fast, 10 or 20 times per second.
Just like a DOS attack ;-)
I'm aware of the problem. This is an unfortunate bug, occuring on some sites. It has been fixed in version 0.3 (pending review, downloadable from the add-on homepage), please upgrade.
I've uninstalled this program because it was creating favicons for sites that already had them, and even though i've removed it, it is still creating favicons for some sites. How do i get it to stop working?!?
This is a fantastic idea
Pity it doesn't work with Mac!
Could you please be more specific than "does not work"? The extension does not have any platform-specific features, it definitely should work on Mac (and considering that according to usage statistics, about 500 hundred users installed on a Mac OS X, it probably does). Perhaps the problem is caused by something else, perhaps a conflicting add-on (e.g., Favicon Picker). Could you please try the add-on with a fresh profile?
