Thanks to the developers for this one. Combined with Adblock Plus it makes surfing the web a much more pleasant experience.

Keep up the good work, and thanks!

I really love it, but I have discovered an issue after using it for a little while: the pop-up bubble in the lower left-hand corner (at least that's where I put it) is covered up by flash animations. This makes it not appear at all on flash sites like Grooveshark. A fix for this would really be appreciated.

i really liked this addon, it's cute and makes you aware of how many things are tracking you, but i have since moved on to TACO because it has more features and does the same thing. but this is still a great app for defeating those damn advertising trackers!

This is a really great add-on to Firefox! It lets you know, right there and then, on the screen in a small window, all of the intrusions that are tagging along with every page you visit!
And even better; you can block them when you do not want them around!
Thanks David and Felix for a VERY helpful and useful browser add-on!!

It just Tells you what Trackers are on the webpage And not *Actually* Block them? WTH? Waste of time.

Blocking With Ghostery

Hi ShadowBrite,

Thanks for giving Ghostery a whirl! Ghostery does, in fact, block trackers and delete various tracking components on browser exit... All you need to do is go to Options > Blocking and then customize your block list. If you have any suggestions or comments, I'm always happy to include them in our new releases, especially if you're finding new trackers that can be added to our database! Check out our support page: http://getsatisfaction.com/ghostery

Cheers,
Adam

Ghostery SUPER slow on google images Bewertet mit 3 von 5 Sternen

On almost every site, ghostery is fine but on google images ( http://www.google.com/images? ), it's very, very slow. It literally takes 40-70 seconds to finish loading. If I turn off ghostery, it's super fast.

Dear previous review,

Read the privacy policy of Ghostery by following the link on this page, next to "add to firefox" (and not the privacy policy that does not have to do with Ghostery on the Better Advertising website). I'm going to install Ghostery now and see if I like it.

Nice program, easy interface.
I would NOT opt in for the GhostRank - if you read the privacy policies of Ghostery and Better Advertising, which Ghostery is a part of, there is a lot of wording that isn't quite clear as to what they do with the data they collect, and too many "in most cases" or most instances". They leave too many back doors. They are adamant that the data isn't used for "advertising purposes" however there is no mention of marketing purposes, and they are completely different.

In one of the posts here someone asked if Better Advertising collects IP addresses, to which the answer is no, however their was no mention if Ghostery collects them and forwards them on.

Short blurb from Better Advertising's "principles"
"“PERSONALLY IDENTIFIABLE INFORMATION” (“PII”) — PII includes the following
information about a specific individual: name, address, telephone number, and email
address — when used to identify a particular individual. For the limited purposes for
which PII is used in these Principles and Commentary, a functional definition of PII
is used that is intended to apply to the various business models most directly involved
in Online Behavioral Advertising.

PII is a term used primarily in two areas in the Principles and Commentary. First,
PII is used in the Transparency principle so that consumers are informed specifically
about the collection and use of PII for Online Behavioral Advertising purposes.
Second, PII is used in this Commentary to describe a specific example of a “material”
change that would require Consent from the consumer under Principle V.

Another interesting remark from Better Advertising
"Better Advertising also publicly pledges never to use any data it collects for advertising."
Better Advertising doesn't use if for those purposes but what a third party does with them isn't a part of BA's concern.
Another excerpt:
“THIRD PARTY” — A Third Party is defined as an entity that engages in Online Behavioral
Advertising at a non-Affiliate’s Web site. This term recognizes that at the center of
these Principles are the entities that collect and use data for Online Behavioral Advertising
purposes.
In some instances, entities that are Affiliates under the Principles may also be Third
Parties and subject to the respective Third Party obligations including, without limitation,
transparency and providing choice for Online Behavioral Advertising. For example,
if a Web portal and an ad network are under common ownership and the Web
portal collects and uses data from non-Affiliate Web sites for delivery of ads, or the
Web portal collects and uses data on Web sites owned by its Affiliates for delivery of
advertisements on any non-Affiliate Web site, the Web portal would be a Third Party.
In instances where data is being collected and used solely among Affiliates, then the
Third Party obligations would not apply.
An advertiser (i.e. that entity whose product or service is being promoted in the
advertisement) is a Third Party to the extent that it is collecting data over time and
across non-Affiliate Web sites in order to predict consumer preferences or interests to
deliver advertising online on non-Affiliate sites. Where the advertiser is instead using
an ad network, Service Provider, or other entity to collect the data over time and
across non-Affiliate Web sites in order to predict consumer preferences or interests to
deliver its advertisement, and such entity is not providing such data to the advertiser
for its independent use, the advertiser is not a Third Party and not, in such instances,
subject to the Principles for such Online Behavioral Advertising. In such instances,
the ad network, Service Provider or other entity’s practices would be covered by the
Principles. If, however, the advertiser collects or receives the data and uses the data for
its own Online Behavioral Advertising purposes, the advertiser would be a Third Party
and subject to the obligations on Third Parties in the Principles.

Data is not considered PII under the Principles if the data is not used in an identifiable
manner. For example, in situations where an IP address is not linked with other PII,
the IP address itself would not in most instances be PII for purposes of these Principles.
In instances where an IP address is in fact linked to an individual in its collection and
use, in most instances the IP address would be PII for purposes of these Principles.
A similar analysis would apply for other persistent identifiers such as a customer
number held in a cookie or processor serial number. When such identifier is in fact
coupled with an individual identifier within the definition of PII, such as first and last
name, such information would be PII for purposes of the Principles. When such data
is not coupled with an individual identifier within the PII definition, the data would
not be PII.

Hi jpl

Thanks for using Ghostery.

Ghostery, GhostRank, data that's sent to us, and what we actually do with it is explained here: http://www.ghostery.com/privacy. There are actually 2 privacy policies here, one specific to Ghostery installation and one specific to Ghostery website. We understand that sometimes its possible to misunderstand or mis-explain what we actually mean, so please feel free to post on our GetSatisfaction (http://getsatisfaction.com/ghostery) page any questions you might have.

With regards to IP addresses. What our privacy policy tries to explain is that your IP address is forwarded to any server on the internet via the underlying technology (that includes ghostery.com when you open it up in your browser). Our policy reflects that, and beyond we explain what we do to get rid of this PII. In specific, our servers have all logging off, so your IP address is never stored with us, regardless of the product or platform.

With regards to GhostRank data. At this point, there are 2 uses for it. Its certainly is not used for any marketing purposes. First use is to collect comprehensive proliferation statistics for the web-bugs Ghostery tracks. Here is a sample: http://www.ghostery.com/apps/google_analytics or http://www.ghostery.com/apps/advertising.com or http://www.ghostery.com/apps/doubleclick. As you can see, GhostRank data allows us to create the right hand box that contains web-site listing. Second use is a bit subtler -- we use GhostRank data to identify, refine, and add new trackers into the detection pattern.

I hope I shed some light on the murkiness you found. If you have any other questions, please feel free to leave us a message.
