Garbage since v6.x Bewertet mit 1 von 5 Sternen

It seems that AMO ist a very user unfriendly platform.
For 4-5 months Ghostery had 150 one star reviews now are 15! This is a joke!

@Yynxs
Thanks for the information
Unfortunately on Firefox mobile you have no control about addon updates, so I deinstal this garbage from Firefox mobile.

Using Ghostery Defeating the Tracking Bewertet mit 1 von 5 Sternen

This is SIXTH posting. 24 Jun 16. The earlier ones were deleted by person's unknown. Since this is a "mozilla.org" forum, I am curious who gets to delete my reviews without notifying me as to why and what the review violated. So, I took a look at the review guidelines. I had them posted below before, but it is obvious they are being ignored.

For those of you keeping count. You will also notice the number of reviews is being adjusted to keep the percentages the same. I have screen snagits of 1141 and 1145 respectively.

Herewith I include a link to ghostery.com https://www.ghostery.com/about-us/press-releases/. Please read the press releases for an indication of why what you are seeing here and in ghostery is occurring.

From my interpretation, it is now an integrated web product designed to work with other ghostery web page products and compliance with EU privacy laws to allow some advertising and tracking. If you feel you should support web sites with allowable advertising dollars, you can probably continue to use it. If you feel, as I do, that Ghostery, in congress with Oracle Marketing Cloud and IBM Digital Analytics has betrayed their core function you should probably not install it.

(Summer 2015: Ghostery announces partnerships and integrations with Oracle Marketing Cloud and IBM Digital Analytics.)

Below is my original review deleted 6 times and in full compliance with mozilla.org posting guidelines as published by mozilla.org.
---------------------------------

Ghostery continuously tries to connect to:

52.71.231.124 IP address location:
IP address [?]: 52.71.231.124
Organization: Amazon.com
Host of this IP: [?]: ec2-52-71-231-124.compute-1.amazonaws.com [Whois] [Trace]
Local time in United States: 2016-06-15 11:18

upon starting Firefox.

This pretty much constitutes tracking my use and time on the internet and reporting it to unknown parties.

I have turned off automatic updating and all features on the new website tracking mechanism that are user available.

Disabling Ghostery stops these automatic connection attempts so it is not another addon.

I can and have this address blocked in my firewall but the goal is not to play cat and mouse with programmers on connections and connection attempts. The goal is to stop all connections unless specifically authorized.

If Ghostery in its new iteration as a wholly owned subsidiary of Oracle has changed it’s company vision, and more specifically, its methodology on Firefox, we users need to be informed so we can make appropriate decisions as to it’s efficacy in real privacy protection compared to its stated privacy protection.

I just read the reviews on Mozilla.org and the firestorm made me want to stop using Ghostery. I haven't yet but I did write my own review on how to stop the reporting back and still get use out of it.

Blocking Ghostery reporting is quite trivial and it would be easy to offer an addon to Mozilla that simply blocks their ranges until clicked to pass for updating. The only non-trivial part would be keeping track of Ghostery's adaptations as it jumped to the cloud to spread the address range into common use areas.

For those that don't write addons I recommend a desktop firewall like Peerblock from Peerblock.com and adding a set of personal blocking rules that block all Amazon, Akamai, Microsoft, and Google ranges in their entirety. The first couple days after writing the ruleset, browsing is slow as individual web addresses must be allowed to use your favorite sites, but the work involved becomes more valuable over time because companies jumping to cloud based common addresses are foiled from using tracking mechanisms like Ghostery is using now to an Amazon address.

Ghostery did and still does an effective job of blocking tracking. The inability of the user to control Ghostery's phone home is why I rated it two (now 1) instead of the 5 it used to carry with me.

No way Bewertet mit 1 von 5 Sternen

Deceivers deleted my review more than 10 times! No way.

I must admit that this addon, with disabled ghostrank, was quite decent before version 6. But with enabled ghostrank it becomes just another tracker, gathering data even from sites without trackers, i.e. all your browsing data. And this was a fraud, because they heavily imposed you to enable ghostrank, pretending that they gathering data only for tracker sites.

Today new version of this addon won't operate without connection to their site, consider you have ghostrank tracker tightly nailed.

Also I'm posting other deleted reviews

It is staggering to recognize that your privacy protection software actually notifies Google, the most offensive, intrusive, privacy violating corp on the planet, of the identifiable information about every user of your product.

Discovering that your browser based configuration program uses fonts.googleapis.com, and by doing so provides Google the IP address of every user using your software to minimize the amount of digital stalking they're subjected to, just goes to show how much Ghostery 6 deserves all the recent 1-star ratings (even if you do delete them on a daily basis).

What… Did Google buy Ghostery recently? Is this part of some nefarious scheme you agreed to upon becoming partners with Oracle and IBM? Or are the programmers there just too lazy to write a few extra lines of code to enable their tracking blocking software in blocking the tracking of users?

New 6.0+ interface seems designed to confuse users into accepting certain trackers, and fundamental features, while still present, are now buried in a convoluted user interface. Given the evidence I have no choice but to think this is purposeful.

To start, social media trackers are whitelisted by default. After installation of the extension, the user is shown a list of tracker types, and asked what they would like to block. Social media trackers are excluded from this set. Digging into the settings reveals that these trackers (92 as of today) are still active. Given the omission of these from the setup dialog, and how difficult it is to find these advanced settings (at least 4 clicks) feels purposefully deceitful, and intended to make people believe they are blocking all known trackers when they are not.

Next, updating tracker libraries, and blocking new trackers in those libraries are different settings. In the initial setup dialog one may choose to update their tracker library automatically. Unfortunately, even if your extension knows of these new trackers, actually blocking new trackers is disabled by default, and not part of the setup dialog. Again, this could lead one to believe that they are protected when they are not.

Finally, the user interface is just plain badly designed, and Ghostery seemed to be missing certain trackers anyway. With these changes Ublock Origin and Privacy Badger are now the only extensions on this front worth using.

Losing focus Bewertet mit 2 von 5 Sternen

This extension used to be about blocking trackers; now, the first thing it does after installation is open a new tab that goes to a webpage to configure it (why not offline like before?), with Google Analytics, Google Fonts, and a "Cookie Consent". It gets harder and harder to configure as 99% of the users want with each revision, with dubious UI choices like removing the "select all" options.

It feels like a bait-and-switch for a long-time user like me. I cannot recommend it anymore.

Apart from that, it still works as advertised... I think...

Not a fan of the new UI (ver6 +). Bewertet mit 1 von 5 Sternen

Since the new V6 has come out I do not care for it or recommend it. If you are going to use I would recommend an older version of ghostery.

Helpful & Easy to Install Bewertet mit 4 von 5 Sternen

Thanks Ghostery for providing a quick and effective browser protection solution. I was looking for something to stop me being bombarded by irrelevant ads and pop-ups, without paying through the nose. You're it!

Notification Bubble Bewertet mit 3 von 5 Sternen

Seemed like an okay addon however the inability to disable the oversized icon in the bottom right of my mobile screen was a deal breaker. Noticing other people have this issue without resolution forced my had to uninstall. Might reconsider installing again should this issue be revolved.

Slowing the browsing experience a lot ! Bewertet mit 3 von 5 Sternen

The goal of Ghostery is really interesting, but the way it turns these last months is horrible: it is slowing my browsing experience on all my computers, even with a Core™ i5-4430 i can see a huge difference with and without ghostery !
I can't remember when it began, but for sure as soon as I uninstalled it today on all my devices, i rediscovered my Firefox !

Either this code is seriously weak or there are an unusual clog of hate trolls on this review... I do not know which.

But dropping a steady feed of turds in punch bowls, as Ghostery Sucks is committed to do, doesn't nothing to illuminate proper use of Ghostery ( assuming there is any )

If he/ she would graciously provide additional instructional text (type in the keystroke sequence, lets say.

Better usability than completely blocking cookies Bewertet mit 4 von 5 Sternen

I have a great deal of redundant security/anonymity plugins, and this one fits in nicely.
The categories available help to make quicker decisions (I, for instance, like to leave comment trackers enabled) and help me to not break so many sites.
For me, it's especially nice to see that it continues to block things that I enable in the more aggressive NoScript in order to make a site load.

Pretty Solid App Bewertet mit 5 von 5 Sternen

This app works really well. I use it along with adblocker, and I hardly see ads and junk that everyone wants to throw my way. Being able to restrict a page is a great feature

Very useful Bewertet mit 5 von 5 Sternen

Decent app Bewertet mit 4 von 5 Sternen

I like it fine enough and it usually doesn't break pages. I use it along with an ad blocker [currently ublockOrigin] and Disconnect. You have to remember that when a page isn't working right to temp-pause the blocking on this app and reload the page. A lot of folks can't seem to manage that.

Ghostery used to be a very helpful, usable add-on. I no longer recommend it to my users because it no longer tells you what you need to know. I manage IT for small businesses.
