Developer: This is a great add-on, I use it every day. However, it appears FF is going to end support for add-ons in May. I use Pale Moon, which is a fork of FF that's gone in a different direction, and this extension works with the older version but not the newer one. That's the only thing that's keeping me from upgrading (or using FF). Could you possibly port it to Pale Moon? They don't have any kind of Wiki lookup in their add-ons list ( https://addons.palemoon.org/extensions ). It might require some customization, but they intend to continue compatibility with add-ons in future versions. Thanks.
It just works fine for me. I wanted something like [ctrl]+click or right-click option and that's it.
4 stars because think it can be better. IMO, there is no use to have "quick lookup in" near each option. and it would be nicer to have flags for languages just near options but not as separate option. + ability to add more languages into menu and ability to choose the level and amount of that options would be great.
But thanks a lot to developer.
PS. If it's possible to find the source, please, sent a link to repo. would be happy to collaborate
which makes it nearly unreadable because it mixes with the text behind the popup window. Should be an easy fix. Possibly add an option in the options to set a specific background color?
I was able to fix this by extracting the xpi and modifying the js code by removing the transparency line setting in the css. Unfortunately firefox 55.03x64 eventually complained saying that the extension couldn't be verified. Seems like that line was the problem though, must be setting the transparency always to 100%. (was only a problem for the background... I could change the foreground text color in the options without issue)
Can you please share device name and operating system name you are using and a screenshot of the transparent background? We gave it as a white background with black text.
The quick lookup never loads further than "Looking up word in Wikipedia/Wikitionary..." and opening in a new page results in server not found.
Hello Victor, the addon is updated to make it compatible with the latest versions of Firefox
Issue #1: Select and right-click a word > then QuickWiki > Quick lookup in Wikipedia. The Dialogue appears saying "Looking up Semantic Web in Wikipedia...". I waited over a minute; nothing happened. If I clicked the word Semantic Web it then loads the page. This happens regardless which word I select.
Upon initial install then restarting when right-clicking a word the icons/word for the language was not visible. The menu just looked like there was duplicate entries.
Icons for toolbar there was a space for one but without image. However, there is two icons that perform the same function. After restarting the icon appeared. One has no verbiage attached the other says QuickWiki
The mere mention of "eliminate the small popup window" is absurd. Taking that feature away negates the title QuickWiki.
This is exactly the add-on I was looking for. When I am researching I don't need the distraction of being taken away from the page I am working on. Having the quick pop up allows me to get the info I need and move on.
Thanks for the detailed info. The plugin is udpated to make it work with the latest versions of Firefox. give it a try and give feedback, if any.
Thanks for your efforts, it makes my work easier. I would suggest that you eliminate the small popup window and open the wiktionary page directly. The problem with the popup that it's very small and often it contains nothing more that broken HTML code. I would gladly send you a screenshot if only I know where to mail it to. Also, please consider to adapt the the software to Thunderbird as well.
When using the lookup function for Wikipedia, it gets stuck on "Looking up x on Wikipedia." When clicking the keyword, it gives an error message about being unable to access .m.Wikipedia.org. Basically unusable right now.
Non funziona più Wikipedia, aggiornare per favore.
Sorry!! I confused this with another add-on. Somebody please delete the "report" I posted earlier, which was a mistake! Thanks!
Very useful :)
Works quite well (FF29, Ubuntu); I expect to use this quite a bit. The only downside is the tiny default window size.
It worked very well, but stopped with Firefox 29 and still the same with version 30. When the Wikipedia or Wiktionary window should open only a small window shows a message "Looking up xxxxxxx on Wikipedia". I removed and reinstalled, but no way.
The developer does not offer any contact, but only a way to donate... strange. Not possible to give this add-on a 5 star, as it might deserve, because this seems to be permanent.
I'm using ff 29.0 version, and it doesn't work
- failed to activate the function by pressing alt/shift button (yes it works using ctrl button)
- it is still faster looking up the definition in new tab instead of using this addons because its endless loading
Useful extension but few improvements will be great, like wiktionary in other languages and ability to use context-menu
Unfortunately, Wiktionary definitions don't show most of the the time.
Wikipedia lookup works well, but the "floating window" should be moveable, and there should be a "open in new tab" button to pop out the content onto a full page.
Links within the floating window also do not function, which is a big minus for functionality.
An interesting solution for a common problem. Definitely saves time
First, to comment on some nice things in this add-on.
-Useful and functional add-on, while also providing a clean look
-I like the bar at the top. I also really like how when using the back and forward buttons, the page changes instantly. Faster than it does through the web browser. This might be because of the many add-ons I have installed and they are not enabled within your add-on.
I don't like how it opens in its own type of window.
-This is not preferable for me because I am reverted to the default smooth scrolling in Firefox, and I like using my SmoothWheel add-on.
-By opening Wikipedia in it's own type of window, it is not saved in the history of Firefox. So there could be options for the user in the settings to do this (for people who like choice), I think it would good for there to be an option to save the Wikipedia results by default, and not the dictionary results by default.
I'm saying "it's own window" because I don't know how else to describe it. But another add-on that I use called FoxLingo that functions similarly to QuickWiki and opens in a window that does not look like a Firefox window, does not have the problem that it does with the SmoothWheel add-on.
And personally, I prefer the FoxLingo add-on for wiktionary lookup because it provides me with other dictionary results as well, since I see others have commented on that. This is useful because FoxLingo puts a different dictionary result at the top when there is no dictionary entry for wiktionary, which is also when QuickWiki does not work.
I (used to) love love love this add-on. More recently, however, the Wiktionary function frequently doesn't work. If not for that, I'd certainly give it a 5-star rating...
Useful and for me indispensible. Somehow i have a feeling the previous versions were more reliable and quicker. Perhaps others would disagree. Firefox 26.0, Acer Aspire 2.3 GHz laptop.
Love, love, love this add-on! Great extension and it works just fine! However, I was wondering whether you could make one small arrangement so that you are able to put the window wherever you want. Right now the text field cannot be moved...Anyway- thank you for a fanstastic add-on!
Love this add-on. Really simple and handy, but sometimes it can't parse wiktionary pages. For example, it shows blank page for "framework". Hope it might be fixed.
