How to turn your household pet into a Firefox theme

Themes are a fun way to change the visual appearance of Firefox and give the browser a look that’s all your own. You’re free to explore more than a half-million community created themes on addons.mozilla.org (AMO), or better yet, create your own custom theme. Best of all — create a theme featuring a beloved pet! Then you can take your little buddy with you wherever you go on the web.

(You’ll need a Mozilla account to create and publish Firefox themes on AMO.)

Prepare your pet pic for upload

I find it helpful to first size my image properly. For Firefox themes, we recommend images with a height between 100 – 200 pixels. So I might first prepare an image with a couple of sizing options, perhaps one at 100 pixel height and another at 200, and see what works best. (Note: as you resize an image, be sure its height and width parameters change in sync so your image maintains proper dimensions.)

Depending on what type of image editing software you have on your computer (PC users can resize pics with the standard Photo or Paint apps, while Mac users may be familiar with Preview), find the controls to resize and save your images in the recommended range. Supported file formats include PNG, JPG, APNG, SVG, or GIF (not animated) and can be up to 6.9MB.

Upload your pet pic & select custom colors

Go to AMO’s Theme Generator page and…

Select colors for the header background, text and icons

Point-and-click color palettes make it easy to create complementary color combinations.

Once you like the way your new theme looks in the preview display, click Finish Theme and you’re done! All new theme submissions must first pass a review process, but that usually only takes a day or two, after which you’ll receive an email notifying you that your personalized pet theme is ready to install on Firefox. Now Tootsie accompanies me everywhere online, although sometimes she just stares at me.

Roblox browser extensions for better gaming

Every day, more than 50 million people play among millions of user-created games on Roblox. Very easy to use extension. Just select your preferred number of players with the slider and hit Smart Search. You’re good to go!

Friend Removal Button

This feature isn’t as sad as it sounds! Roblox puts a cap on the number of “friends” you’re allowed to connect with. But over time Roblox players come and go, accounts get abandoned, things happen. Then you’re left with a bunch of meaningless “friends” that clog your ability to form new Roblox connections. Friend Removal Button can help.

The extension adds a red-mark button to each friend card so you can easily prune your friend list anytime.

How Firefox’s Total Cookie Protection and container extensions work together

When we recently announced the full public roll-out of Firefox Total Cookie Protection — a new default browser feature that automatically confines cookies to the websites that created them, thus eliminating the most common method that sites use to track you around the web — it raised a question: Do container extensions like Mozilla’s Facebook Container and Multi-Account Containers still serve a purpose, since they similarly perform anti-tracking functions by suppressing cookie trails?

In short, yes. Container extensions offer additional benefits even beyond the sweeping new privacy enhancements introduced with Firefox Total Cookie Protection.

Total Cookie Protection + container extensions = enhanced anti-tracking

Total Cookie Protection isolates cookies from each website you visit, so Firefox users now receive comprehensive cookie suppression wherever they go on the web.

However, Total Cookie Protection does not isolate cookies from different open tabs under the same domain. So for instance, if you have Google Shopping open in one tab, Gmail in another, and Google News in a third, Google will know you have all three pages open and connect their cookie trails.

But with a container extension, you can isolate cookies even within parts or pages of the same domain. You could have Gmail open in one container tab and Google Shopping and News in other containers (for instance, under different accounts) and Google will be oblivious to their relation.

Beyond this added privacy protection, container extensions are most useful as an easy means of separating different parts of your online life (e.g. personal, work) within the same browser.

A couple reasons you might want Multi-Account Containers installed on Firefox…

Avoid logging in and out of different accounts under the same web platform; for example, with containers you could have separate instances of Slack open at the same time — one for work, another for friends.
If multiple family members or roommates share Firefox on one computer, each person can easily access their own container with a couple clicks.

While, technically, you can create a Facebook container within Multi-Account Containers, the Facebook Container extension is intended to provide a simple, targeted solution for so many Facebook users concerned about the pervasive ways the social media behemoth tracks you around the web.

Facebook tracks your online moves outside of Facebook through the various widgets you find embedded ubiquitously around the web (e.g. “Like” buttons or Facebook comments on articles, social share features, etc.). The convenience of automatic sign-in when you visit Facebook is because of cookies. However, this convenience comes at a steep privacy cost — those same cookies can tell Facebook about any page you visit associated with one of its embedded features.

But with Facebook Container installed on Firefox, you maintaIn the convenience of automatic Facebook sign-in while cutting off the cookie trail to other sites you visit outside of Facebook.

So if you want superior anti-tracking built right into your browser, plus the enhanced privacy protections and organizational convenience of containers, install a container extension on Firefox and rest easy knowing your cookie trails aren’t exposed.

uBlock Origin

Works beautifully “right out of the box.” Just add it to Firefox and uBlock Origin will automatically start blocking all types of advertising — display ads, banners, video pre-rolls, pop-ups — you name it.

Of course, if you prefer deeper content blocking customization, uBlock Origin allows for fine control as well, like the ability to import your own custom block filters or access a data display that shows how much of a web page was blocked by the extension. More than just an ad blocker, uBlock Origin also effectively thwarts some websites that may be infected with malware.

What a handy tool for designers and developers — Measure-it lets you draw a ruler across any web page to get precise dimensions in pixels.

The pandemic changed everything — even the way we use browser extensions

On March 11, 2020 the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic. Within days, practically the entire planet was on lockdown. We went indoors and online.

So how did the sudden mass migration online impact browser extension usage? Pretty dramatically, it turns out. On this two-year mark of the start of the pandemic we looked back at Firefox extension installs and usage data to discover several compelling trends.

We wanted to see the types of extensions Firefox users were drawn to during the early days of the lockdown, so we compared average monthly installs for three months at the start of the lockdown (March – May ‘20) to average monthly installs for the three months prior (Dec. ‘19 – Feb. ‘20). For this exercise we only looked at Firefox extensions with a minimum of 10,000 users. Here are some things we found…

We need all the help we can get working and educating from home

As much of the world suddenly transitioned their work and schooling to home computers in March 2020, Firefox users flocked to a handful of notable extensions to make life a little easier.

Which extension got the biggest install boost during the first few months of lockdown?

Zoom Scheduler

Of course it’s a Zoom extension. Zoom Scheduler installs increased 1,522%.

Created by Zoom, their extension integrates Google Calendar with the Zoom app so you can conveniently schedule or start Zoom meetings directly from your Google Calendar on Firefox.

Dark Background and Light Text

When you’re suddenly doing everything on a computer, you need to take care of those precious peepers. Dark Background and Light Text installs jumped an eye-popping 351%.

Tree Style Tab

Apparently we suffered from too many open tabs at the start of the pandemic (work tabs! school tabs! breaking news!). Tree Style Tab (+126%) gives Firefox users a great way to cope with tab overload.

The extension helps you organize all of your open tabs into a cascading “tree” format, so you can group tabs by topic and get a clean visual layout of everything.

To Google Translate

This translation tool was already very popular when the lockdown started, so it’s curious its install rate still climbed a whopping 126%, going from 222,000 installs/month to more than 504,000.

To Google Translate provides easy right-click mouse access to the Google Translate service, eliminating the nuisance of copying text and navigating away from the page you’re on just to translate.

We can only speculate why Firefox users wanted translation extensions when the pandemic started (To Google Translate wasn’t an aberration; all of the top translation extensions had install increases), but it’s worth wondering if a big factor wasn’t a common desire to get broader perspectives, news and information about the emerging virus. Privacy Badger installs lept 80% globally during those first few months of lockdown, with particularly keen interest from Italy (+135%) and Brazil (+119%).

BetterTTV

Installs of this top Twitch extension were up 46% as we turned to each other for live streaming entertainment. BetterTTV can radically alter the look and feel of Twitch with new emoticons, a more focused interface, content filters, and a reimagined chat experience (including Anonymous Chat so you can join a channel without drawing attention).

BetterTTV was particularly popular in Germany, where installs soared 76%.

Watch2gether extension

A lot of people became “watch party” animals during lockdown. If you haven’t tried social streaming, it’s a fun way to enjoy synced videos while chatting with friends online. Watch2gether extension became a popular choice for social stream parties (+82%).

You don’t need the extension to use the web-based Watch2gether platform, but the extension provides a few added perks when used in conjunction with the web service, such as easy browser access to your watch rooms and the ability stream videos that aren’t directly supported by the Watch2gether website (e.g. the video source doesn’t offer an embeddable version).

YouTube Non-Stop

A 45% install increase means we started listening to a lot more music on YouTube when the lockdown hit. YouTube Non-Stop solves the problem of that annoying “Video paused. Continue watching?” prompt by automatically clicking it in the background so your groove never comes to a grinding halt.

Two ad blockers vie for most popular in 2021

2021 has two clear contenders for top extension, both of which happen to be ad blockers: Adblock Plus averaged 6,134,231 daily users while uBlock Origin averaged 5,011,974 over the course of the year.

As 2021 progressed, however, uBlock Origin gradually closed the gap and if current usage trends continue, may take the top spot sometime in early 2022.

Privacy Badger

Cookie AutoDelete

Take control of your cookie trail with Cookie AutoDelete. Set it so cookies are automatically deleted every time you close a tab, or create safelists for select sites you want to preserve cookies.

After installation, you must enable “Auto-clean” for the extension to automatically wipe away cookies. This is so you first have an opportunity to create a custom safelist, should you choose, before accidentally clearing away cookies you might want to keep.

There’s not much you have to do once you’ve got your safelist set, but clicking the extension’s toolbar button opens a pop-up menu with a few convenient options, like the ability to wipe away cookies from open tabs or clear cookies for just a particular domain.

Firefox Multi-Account Containers

Do you need to be simultaneously logged in to multiple accounts on the same platform, say for instance juggling various accounts on Google, Twitter, or Reddit? Facebook Container

Does it come as a surprise that Facebook tries to track your online behavior beyond the confines of just Facebook? If so, I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Facebook definitely tries to track you outside of Facebook. But with Facebook Container you can put a privacy barrier between the social media giant and your online life outside of it.

Facebook primarily investigates your interests outside of Facebook through their various widgets you find embedded ubiquitously about the web (e.g. “Like” buttons or Facebook comments on articles, social share features, etc.)

Social widgets like these give Facebook and other platforms a sneaky means of tracking your interests around the web.

The privacy trade we make for the convenience of not needing to sign in to Facebook each time we visit the site (because it recognizes your browser as yours) is we give Facebook a potent way to track our moves around the web, since it can tell when you visit any web page embedded with its widgets.

Facebook Container basically allows you the best of both worlds—you can preserve the convenience of not needing to sign in/out of Facebook, while placing a “container” around your Facebook profile so the company can’t follow you around the web anymore.

CanvasBlocker

Stop websites from using JavaScript APIs to “fingerprint” you when you visit. CanvasBlocker prevents a uniquely common way websites try to track your web moves.

Best suited for more technical users, CanvasBlocker lets you customize which API’s should be protected from fingerprinting — on some or all websites. The extension can even be configured to alter your API identity to further obfuscate your online identity.

Disconnect

Strong privacy tool that fares well against hidden trackers used by some of the biggest data trackers in the game like Google, Facebook, Twitter and others, Disconnect also provides the benefit of significantly speeding up page loads simply by virtue of blocking all the unwanted tracking traffic.

uBlock Origin—everything you need to know about the ad blocker

Rare is the browser extension that can satisfy both passive and power users. But that’s an essential part of uBlock Origin’s brilliance—it is an ad blocker you could recommend to your most tech forward friend as easily as you could to someone who’s just emerged from the jungle lost for the past 20 years.

If you install uBlock Origin and do nothing else, right out of the box it will block nearly all types of internet advertising—everything from big blinking banners to search ads and video pre-rolls and all the rest. However if you want extremely granular levels of content control, uBlock Origin can accommodate via advanced settings.

We’ll try to split the middle here and walk through a few of the extension’s most intriguing features and options…

Does using uBlock Origin actually speed up my web experience?

Yes. Not only do web pages load faster because the extension blocks unwanted ads from loading, but uBlock Origin utilizes a uniquely lightweight approach to content filtering so it imposes minimal impact on memory consumption. It is generally accepted that uBlock Origin offers the most performative speed boost among top ad blockers.

But don’t ad blockers also break pages?

Occasionally that can occur, where a page breaks if certain content is blocked or some websites will even detect the presence of an ad blocker and halt passage.

Fortunately this doesn’t happen as frequently with uBlock Origin as it might with other ad blockers and the extension is also extremely effective at bypassing anti-ad blockers (yes, an ongoing battle rages between ad tech and content blocking software). But if uBlock Origin does happen to break a page you want to access it’s easy to turn off content blocking for specific pages you trust or perhaps even want to see their ads.

Let’s take a look at some high level settings and what you can do with them.

Lightning bolt button enables Element Zapper, which lets you temporarily remove page elements by simply mousing over them and clicking. For example, this is convenient for removing embedded gifs or for hiding disturbing images you may encounter in some news articles.
Eye dropper button enables Element Picker, which lets you permanently remove page elements. For example, if you find Facebook Stories a complete waste of time, just activate Element Picker, mouse over/click the Stories section of the page, select “Create” and presto—The End of Facebook Stories.

The five buttons on this row will only affect the page you’re on.

Pop-up button blocks—you guessed it—pop-ups
Film button blocks large media elements like embedded video, audio, or images
Eye slash button disables cosmetic filtering, which is on by default and elegantly reformats your pages when ads are removed, but if you’d prefer to see pages laid out as they were intended (with just empty spaces instead of ads) then you have that option
“Aa” button blocks remote fonts from loading on the page
“</>” button disables JavaScript on the page

Does uBlock Origin protect against malware?

If you’re missing the fun of watching movies and other entertainment with friends in real time, try a browser extension like Metastream Remote or Watch2gether to host private online watch parties.

Metastream Remote

Install Metastream Remote and host a watch party within minutes. It works with most common video streaming sites like YouTube, Twitch, Vimeo, Dailymotion—even audio sites like SoundCloud. So you’ve decided to do something about all those annoying ads you’re barraged with online. What pushed you over the edge? Auto-play video ads? Blaring banners? Tired of your music interrupted by a sudden sponsorship? Was it the realization they intentionally make the ‘Close’ buttons [x] on ads super tiny so you accidentally click the very thing you’re trying to avoid?

There are a number of approaches you can take to blocking ads with a browser extension—it just depends on what you’re trying to achieve. Here are some of the best ad blockers based on different goals…

I just want an awesome, all-purpose ad blocker.

Keep in mind a benefit of any decent ad blocker is that you should experience a faster web, since fewer ads means there’s less content for your browser to load. It’s a win-win: ditch awful ads while speeding up your experience.

Also know, however, that ad blockers can occasionally break web pages when innocent content gets caught in the ad blocking crossfire. Some websites will even detect ad blockers and restrict access until you disable the blocker.

uBlock Origin

By any measure uBlock Origin is one of the gold standards in ad blocking. Not only an elite ad blocker that stops nearly every type of ad by default—including video and pop-ups—uBlock Origin is lightweight, so it doesn’t consume much CPU and memory.

Works brilliantly out of the box with a matrix of built-in filters (though you can import your own), including a few that block more than just ads but hidden malware sources, as well. Clicking its toolbar icon activates the extension’s minimalist pop-up menu where at a glance you can see blocked tracking sources and how much of the overall page was nearly impacted by advertising.

Unlike some ad blockers that allow what they consider “non-intrusive” ads through their filters, uBlock Origin has no advertising whitelist by default and tries to block all ads, unless you tell it otherwise.

AdBlock for Firefox

Refined extension design and strong content filters make AdBlock for Firefox a solid choice for people who don’t necessarily despise all ads (just the super annoying, invasive kind) and perhaps recognize that advertising, however imperfect it may be, provides essential compensation for your favorite content creators and platforms.

AdBlock blocks all types of ads by default, but lets users opt in to Acceptable Ads by choice. Acceptable Ads is an independent vetting program where advertisers can participate to have their ads pass through content filters if they meet certain criteria, like only allowing display ads that fit within strict size parameters, or text ads that adhere to tight aesthetic restrictions.

AdBlock also makes it easy for you to elect to accept certain niche types of advertising, like ads that don’t use third party tracking, or ads on your favorite YouTube and Twitch channels.

AdGuard AdBlocker

Highly effective ad blocker and anti-tracker that even works well on Facebook and YouTube. AdGuard also smartly allows certain types of ads by default—like search ads (since you might be looking for a specific product or service) and “self promotion” ads (e.g. special deals on site-specific shopping platforms like “50% off today only!” sales, etc.)

At Mozilla, of course we’re fans of Firefox’s built-in, privacy-focused translation feature, but the beauty of browser extensions is the vast array of niche tools and customization features they can provide. Sometimes finding the right extension for your personal needs can profoundly change the way you interact with the web.
