It WAS brilliant. It worked excellently for my previous versions of Firefox.
I could choose any page I wanted to open automatically when I opened a new tab.
Unfortunately, it is incompatible with Firefox 59 (the one they call quantum).
So I have no choice but to put up with firefox's chice of page.
new tab shows like 15 thumbnails - all I want is a clean google search page - tried several times - restarting etc. SUCKS
I am using Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; WOW64; rv:53.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/53.0
Doesn't work(I think since the new nightly update, because it doesn't work now to change the new tab page using about:config) and has big bug.
When I enable always keep new tab open it opens tabs automatically, really fast and with no stop.
I've set URL to open as Google. New tab opens and all I get is a blank page.
Installed in May of 2016 and it never functioned in any way. Finally switched to "New Tab Override" when I grew sick of blank tabs always opening. I can't comprehend why anyone would ever want a blank page? What can you do with a blank webpage exactly? At least have it default to a cat picture or something, what a waste of clicks in my life.
It's been over 60 days so it seems this is dead...sucks because this is one functionality that FF is seriously lacking.
I am on FF42, and still with no forward traction on re-instating the lost functionality.
I guess we should just morn the loss and move on.
This was working prior to FF41
Someone said to install New Tab Override to make this add on work properly in FF41, however unless I'm missing something, that add on simply replaces this one and gives no ability to open a new tab to the current web page which is the appeal of newtaburl for me.
The behavior I'm getting in FF41 is, having installed NewTabToolbarbutton, when I click that button I get a new tab opened to the current page which is what I have newtaburl set to do. When I type Ctrl-T, I get this list of suggested webpages or having installed NewTabOverride and entered about:home in it's options, I get a webpage opened to google which isn't my home page.
Maybe if there was readily accessible documentation about what those newtab options in about:config do we could have some chance of making this work. I'm pretty sick of firefox breaking stuff constantly.
Isn't there a code for "current webpage" that we can put in New Tab override?
Just updated. Shows a panel of recently open pages and not the homepage. Add on is set to homepage.
I have removed and reinstalled the add on. Restarted. No joy.
To get this to work in FF41 and above you simply install the "New Tab Override" addon. In this add-on, in preferences, change URL from "about:newtab" to "about:home". Now NewTabURL will work as before. Then register with mozilla.org and give this add-on a 5 star rating to offset the many 1 star ratings from people who are currently confused about what is going on. Also, please do not comment on this addon unless you include info on "New Tab Override" or a similar addon for completeness. Let's end the confusion!
This is very good software, doing exactly what it should - opening specific URL in a new tab, and when there's HTTP address in clipboard, opens that one. Using that for years.
Unfortunatelly, stopped working after upgrading to FF41, and haven't found working steps to fix that. So stay on FF40 if you wish to use this, until a fix is released.
Not working with firefox 41.0
The about:config do not working anymore
Used this for years, never had a problem, lately nothing but problems. Installed it again after reading review by "dypsis" who said it worked for him but it did NOT work for me in Firefox 41. I open a new tab and get a blank page.
I am not sure why some people are reporting it not working for Firefox 41.
It is working for me. I have Google set as my home page and this addon set as home page for the default URL. My new tab opens with Google and the cursor focused in the Google search field.
Unfortunately it no longer works in FF 41. Unable to override the newly introduced Firefox tiles. Always used the Home page as my new tab but even the about:config setting is blocked.
Works, but often brings up an URL on a tab when you don't want it to. I think this add-on should only insert a URL when the new tab is blank.
In current behaviour, say you have it set to bring up your homepage on new tabs, it will go to your homepage when restoring a closed tab from history, and when restarting Firefox it will put your homepage over one of your tabs in one of your windows.
It's easy enough to hit "back" to get back to the proper page, but there's a risk you'll mistake it for an unused tab and just close it, losing whatever you were doing.
Does not work. Does not redirect tab to new specified address.
And yes I followed the instructions to the letter (several attempts) to modify the about:config settings for newtab entries, as per appended instructions here
Waste of time
It works fine!
Nice useful addon working well in Ff 31.0
Ever since upgrading to Firefox 26, a lot of my add-ons disappeared. I reinstalled NewTabURL, but it's not functioning properly. I want it to load new tabs with Google, but new tabs load a Top Sites kind of page instead. Frustrating.
Nálam semmit nem csinál. Beállítottam, újraindítottam, de az új lapnál nincs semmi.
You think this should have been a built in function of FF.
Howto: Fixing NewTabURL Rated 5 out of 5 stars
by GGITech on September 23, 2012
If you have done any of the about:config / browser.newtaburl changes, then undo them.
browser.newtab.url - should be blank
browser.newtabpage.enabled - should be true
Now the Add-On works as expected, including the "URL from Clipboard"
Very simple extension, but essential for me...
Newtaburl did not work any more in Firefox 17. I followed the procedure given by GGITech and that works now.
