107 trillion of emails have been sent over the Internet in 2010. The 89,1% of those were Spam. It means an average of 262 billion of Spam emails per day.
Email Security Plus lets you to take back control over your inbox, providing to Mozilla Thunderbird a set of additional tools for the email security.
NB: Email Security Plus is not a full, complete AntiSpam solution. It does NOT detect all the Spam, it is not perfect and it will never be. However, it is a useful set of tools that gives you more control on your inbox.
Please also note that, since Email Security Plus scan all the incoming emails using sync-stream-listener, you may have problems using it with IMAP (e.g. Thunderbird locked up...).
As you probably know, Mozilla Thunderbird uses a bayesian filter. This is one of the latest and more efficient content filtering approach that recognizes Spam by looking at the percentage ratio of individual words inside both the legitimate and junk emails. It is impressively effective, but it needs to be “trained” — it needs that some emails are flag as Spam before starts to work properly.
Email Security Plus provides two rule-based filters that train the bayesian filter of Mozilla Thunderbird, by marking automatically the junk emails. These two different filters control respectively emails coming from unknown senders (looking for: Spam, Scam, Phishing, …) and from senders that are in your Address Book (looking for Hoax emails).
The AntiSpam and AntiHoax filters are activated by default. However, if you do not want that incoming emails are automatically scanned, you can always disable the automatic scans. At any time, also if you have disabled the automatic scans, you can always scan one or more emails manually.
NB: If, using Email Security Plus, you continue to receive a lot of Spam and/or Hoax, or if a lot of legitimate emails are marked as junk, you can try to change the Spam/Hoax score threshold or the values of the Spam/Hoax words in order to improve the performances of the filters.
"X-Spam-Status" and "Received" headers:
In addition, Email Security Plus gives to the users the possibility to easily check how much Spam-like a message is, thanks to the email Spam score reported in the "X-Spam-Status" header.
The Spam score is shown: in the scan window, in a custom column of the thread tree and, optionally, in the extended header view. This "Spam Rate" column lets you to keep an eye on how much Spam-like your emails are. You can also sort the messages by Spam Rate.
To view the Spam Rate in the messages that were received before the installation of Email Security Plus, you need to right click on folders, than click on “Properties…”, in the context menu, and finally click on the “Repair Folder” button.
Blacklist and Whitelist:
Email Security Plus also provides a Blacklist and a Whitelist.
Both the Blacklist and the Whitelist are activated by default. All the incoming emails from blocked senders — senders that are in the Blacklist — are automatically moved into the Trash folder, while all the incoming emails from trusted senders — senders that are in the Whitelist — are not scanned. However, if you do not want to use them, you can always disable them at any time.
Users can add the senders’ email address or domain to the Blacklist or to the Whitelist in one-click.
Email Security Plus is a cross-platform add-on. It works (out of the box) under Apple Mac OS X, Linux distributions and Microsoft Windows as well.
