Why was EHTip created?
Probably the first incentive to search for a similar add-on was frequent questions from my father about meaning of English words on web sites. There was no such add-on for English⟷Croatian so I made one (EnHrDict) that used an online service to retrieve translations. At beginning it worked nicely but soon that online service was unable to handle all users. After some searches I found an dictionary in text format (EH.txt) and decided to adapt and integrate it inside a new extension (EHTip). Having local dictionaries have other several benefits, like declinations, speed, no need of internet connection, and privacy. Also I wanted a tool to help me on writing in English, so I implemented/invented the "click to replace" feature. That was great, but also I wanted to use a similar feature by using keyboard only instead of the mouse, so I implemented "suggestions" that unfortunately still works optimally only on Windows.
What's next for EHTip
I intend to rewrite entire EHTip, implementing new features like the ability to add/remove definitions, an more easy/proper way to install/manage user dictionaries, support for Thunderbird, and more.
Please, fill free to suggest improvements for EHTip 3 on http://groups.google.com/group/ehtip.
