My favorite/most useful Thunderbird extension!

I had reason to move to Postbox almost a year ago, and I still have not adjusted to the loss of Close-Tab-On-Esc functionality. (Like another reviewer, I have also been a longtime Outlook and Noes user).

Please consider porting this to Postbox!

Just Perfect!
As a heavy users of both Outlook and Lotus Notes at work, escape to close an email is now almost part of my DNA. It was my biggest gripe with using Thunderbird for personal use.
This add-in bring back the simple joy of "things just working right"
Thanks a mill to the developer!

Thank you

Thank you so much for this file. Works perfect. I spent way too much time trying to map the keyboard to replace Cntrl+F4 with the escape key, but could not figure out KEYCONFIG add on. This app save me a lot of time, frustration, and is a must have for keyboard intensive people.

Very useful, couldn't work without it Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Brings back old behaviour of Thunderbird 2.0.0.24 and makes live much easier.

Giving only four stars though, because pressing Escape not only closes the message window but does also reset quick filter (if string had been entered in quick search form before) or hide quick filter bar (if currently no string in search form).

I fixed this in my installation of the add-on by adding the following line after line 20 in file "messenger-overlay.js":
e.preventDefault();

I hope the author will also apply this simple one-line-patch patch in the near future to make it available even to those who do not know how to alter the installation files.

Thanks for the hint

New version is on its way :)

Excellent, just an improvement needed Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Excellent add-on if you want like me to be able to close emails with ESC. Just one request to make it even better: when you hit ESC and got back to the mailbox, any quick filter that was set disappears. It would be good to preserve it. Thanks a lot!

Exactly what it promises Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Does exactly what it promises, and what I needed. Small and simple.
Working on Thunderbird v12.0.
Also works on messages opened in a new window (as opposed to just in a tab).

What makes it so special is, that the focus doesn't go to the tab to the left of the closed tab as Thunderbird normally does, but to the folder view to the very left.
It would be fantastic if this feature could be added for deleted tabs also.

Nice add-on. Can't do without it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Nice Add-on. Have been used to using the Esc key like this since DOS days and find it very helpful.

Like "Click-Click" (in review below) I also experienced an add-on compatibility issue with latest Thunderbird update. I followed the same process that he did in order to resolve things.

If anyone else needs to do this, Google-search for the "How-To Geek" article using the following search terms (complete with quotes) "Hack Extension Files to Make Them Version-Compatible for Firefox". Ignore the "Firefox" references as instructions are the same for Thunderbird.

Instsall.rdf needs updating Rated 4 out of 5 stars

A minor update to TB 6.0.1 says this addon is no longer compatible. Can the install.rdf be changed so that it doesn't have to be changed with each new update?

I manually changed the maxVersion to "6.* although 7.0 will be out soon and will need changing again.

Thanks

Well done! Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Thank you very much! I am used to press ESC to leave, because I am using Lotus Notes in my company.

much needed Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Thanks for providing this add on. I can't understand why this feature is not part of Thunderbird itself.

I've been using this for quite awhile, and love it. Recently updated to TB 6.0, and this add-on is not supported. When will the add-on be rev'd so it works with TB 6.0? Thx!

Sometimes it's the little details... Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Thank you so much for the fix (and thanks to the original author as well!). The fix works for Thunderbird 6.

Just a little detail like not being able to use the Esc key can be a deal-breaker. Thank God for those who write fixes like this.

Brilliant! This solves a long standing shortcoming in Thunderbird. Many thanks to the author.

It works fine with Thunderbird 6. Until the author makes an update you can tweek it yourself. Open the xpi file with an archive program like 7zip, extract install.rdf and edit the file to change maxVersion to 6.0, then update the xpi archive and proceed with installing the add-on.

Close tab of ESC for 6.0? Rated 5 out of 5 stars

It is a great feature that makes working with Thunderbird much faster: there is no need anymore to use the mouse solely to close a tab.
Disappointing that it is not available for Thunderbird 6.0. Can someone tell me if this will become available soon?
The other option is to downgrade to 5.0...

Great add on to Thunderbird Rated 5 out of 5 stars

This is a great add on to Thunderbird. I needed an easy way to close all open tabs. Surprisingly there is no such feature in TBird, or at least, I never found it. This add on does the trick. Just point to any open tab, hit ESC, and it's gone. Good job.
