Why was Afrikaans spell checker created?
I can't spell and neither can many other people it seems. Afrikaans is also not my first language so I struggle to make correct spelling decisions. Fortunately spell checkers come to my rescue.
I can't claim to have built this spell checker, although I've put a lot of time into it. The spell checker was built by Translate.org.za and a number of volunteers over the years. People have collected Afrikaans words and added them to our wordlists. Others have helped to build the checker for OpenOffice.org. Still others have tested, told us about missing words: "want" and "of" believe it or not!
The bottom line motivation is that we at Translate.org.za want to make sure that everyone has a free spell checker. Why should anyone have to pay for a fundamental part of using a computer. When we say free we mean free. Free to use, free to install, free to share.
You can help us by joining the team and classifying words. If that sounds too hard, then tell all your friends to use this checker. If even that sounds too hard then please donate so that we can continue to give you the best free spell checker.
What's next for Afrikaans spell checker
Next up for the spell checker is to add features that will allow us to better handle aglutenation. This will mostly involve classifying our current wordlists based on their part of speech.
