Highlighter v0.1.4 can be made to work in v29.0.1 of Firefox. The only issue I've seen happens when you right-click the "Highlight" toolbar icon to change color. The background is transparent and the text appears to float in space. Despite this minor issue, you can still change the color from the list.
In the "About this Add-on" section it states that this add-on "requires Firefox 14 or later". This is not entirely correct. While I cannot speak to other earlier versions of Firefox, as of this review, "Download YouTube Videos as MP4" v1.6.5 works without issue in Firefox v3.6.28 when the minimum version restriction is removed.
I did not remove any stars from my review because despite the artificial restriction, the author has done a superb job of creating and maintaining this add-on. I see no reason why I can't spend 1 minute removing the restriction so that it works in my choice of browser. Yet, if possible, I would like to see the minimum version restriction lifted so that future updates automatically appear within Firefox.
After reading many recent "Download Statusbar" reviews, I decided to look into some of the claims presented here for myself. I went to the history page and downloaded v0.9.8 and v0.9.10. This is what I found:
1. User "m98432" claims, "the file sizes between (clean) version 0.9.8 and new reverted version 0.9.10 are different by 18kb".
You can't measure differences by just looking at the on disk archive (container) size. While the archive difference is 17KB (ie: v0.9.8 is 408KB vs v0.9.10 is 425KB (most likely due to different compression)), the unpacked contents difference is 3 bytes. All differences are contained into one file, the "install.rdf". Here are all of the differences:
The differences are "Version", "MaxVersion", "Creator" and "Homepage". These differences are trivial. If v0.9.8 worked before, I see no reason why v0.9.10 wouldn't work now.
2. User "Mat" claims, "now that it pops up the about box on every startup".
I see no such behavior here with v0.9.10 installed. I have restarted FireFox numerous times before and after rebooting. Unless you are still using the no longer available v0.9.9.
3. User "Cloudkiller" claims, "This 'feature' even when you disable it will turn itself back on in 7 days".
Since the v0.9.10 code is nearly identical to the v0.9.8 code, with the exceptions listed above, that is highly unlikely to happen. Unless you are still using the no longer available v0.9.9.
4. User "Jayster46" claims, "I'm not sure how the code in this version could affect page renders, but it does".
IMO, it can't. Certainly not on it's own. Perhaps you have something else going on there?
5. User "davolente" claims, "I now seem to be having trouble downloading zip files through the program".
Went to SourceForge and downloaded several ZIP files. I had no issues with v0.9.10 and ZIP files.
A couple of final notes. I am not claiming to be an expert on the matter, I could be wrong and I can't predict what future versions will contain. I'm not trying to change anyone's opinion, only to present some facts into the discussion.
I'm using WinXP (SP2) and have FireFox v3.6.23 installed. I have many add-ons installed, including v0.9.10 of "Download Statusbar". I never had v0.9.9 installed, skipped it. Whether any of this makes a difference I don't know. Based on the above, I see no important differences between v0.9.8 and v0.9.10.
YMMV and best of luck to you.
