Thank you for the support Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I was having trouble with the converter since the last update, but thanks to your step by step instructions it's now working fine again.

Much appreciated.

Rated 1 out of 5 stars

I used to use this for a while only for very rare occasions. So now even in those occasions this has become pretty uselss since it wants me to download soething suddenly ?!

Doesn't really matter I will download something else now.

I created this acc because I saw the provider now accusing everyone of being a secret agent or some sort of..

But no i am just a general user who's pretty upset.

I used to like this for while.

No integration with DownloadThemAll is deal breaker Rated 1 out of 5 stars

DTA integration was an awesome feature. Don't need this addon if that's not going to be there.

Here's the catch... Rated 1 out of 5 stars

You CAN'T download certain videos when using this add-on, unless you install the ConvertHelper program that you will automatically be linked to when the failure occurs.

Couple of examples: Sia's "Big Girls Cry" Official Video, and Boyce Avenue's "Thinking Out Loud" cover.

In other words, anything with "ADP" in front of it in the DLH dropdown listing. (Both those videos have only ADP choices.) Read up on the ADP thing if you wish, and good luck with that.

So, you install the program, then what? The video downloads, but you discover that it has an annoying watermark on it.

So this developer is basically holding your videos hostage unless you cough up $28.50 to free the videos from this encumbrance.

This is analogous to a car maker giving you a "free" car, but then you discover that the annoying seat belt warning chime sounds continuously, regardless of whether the belt is fastened or not, and you must pay the car maker a "ransom" fee to remove the problem.

Actually, to me (since I have absolutely no intention of coughing up the "ransom"), the most irksome thing about this is the attitude this guy has adopted in these comment rebuttals. I wonder if he thinks people are buying into his logic. Just downright laughable.

"They're still free...blah, blah..." - yeah, they're free (at least for the time being), if you don't mind your vids being gunked up with a watermark. And he KNOWS that we DO mind.

Either make this a free FF add-on, but don't pull a stunt like this - it's really rude and displays bad taste. Just be totally transparent UP FRONT and tell people what the deal is from the get-go ("It's gonna cost you MONEY, folks"), because a lot of these vids (I'm discovering) won't download any more - this isn't a rare, isolated phenomenon, in other words.

Of course, what I'm doing (along with a lot of others), is seeking out solutions (Read: other programs) to get the job done. And where this add-on is concerned, it just leaves me with a sour taste in my mouth.

Rest in Piece DownloadHelper... Rated 1 out of 5 stars

I've used and loved it in the past but I'm certainly NOT going to pay for something I can get for free!
Goodbye DownloadHelper and hello JDownloader!
JDownloader does it all FOR FREE and even more...
A shame what happened to this add-on..

What exactly would you have to pay that used to be free ?
You can continue to use this add-on as you did, for free.

Nuts reviews ??!!

I have been using this add-on for many years, maybe since 2008 or something and i always liked it. Simple, efficient, doing the job. With a few imperfections I could easily live with.
I was disappointed when it stopped working with the release of firefox 36. In fact i stepped back to firefox 35 just to keep this add-on in action.

Then the developers came with the new version 5. Everything was back to normal and even better than what it used to be: now I know where the detected videos come from and why and how they disappear after some time.

Now I've been reading a number of highly negative reviews and I cannot disagree more with what is being written there. The facts that are being stated are simply false. I've had no problem installing the converter and I use it when necessary but generally it is simply not used.

Could it be a same user posting those lies ? I hope it is. Knowing that so many people are, in good faith, so stupid, would destroy my faith in humanity.

Keep up the good work developers !

What a waste of a great addon. Rated 1 out of 5 stars

I've been using Mozilla addons for years, but I've only just registered, and for one reason - to express my disgust and dismay at the writer of this addon, for turning what was a perfectly useable, accessible utility into a malware-baiting cash-cow. "You need to download this malware (converter) in order to do what you've been able to do for years without any such requirement, before I decided to milk it dry".

I hope you fail in whatever endeavour you pursue, you parasite.

Then you shouldn't have a problem mentioning one single thing you could do with the previous version for free and not with the new one for the same price :)

Difference in functionality Rated 1 out of 5 stars

The developer asked for URLs, which are downloadable with v4 but not downloadable in v5. Here are two of those: and

On FF37 with VDH 5.1.2 (the latest available) it didn't allowed me download the clips, unless I install some converter - which turned out to be an out-dated version of LibAV, packaged with InnoSetup (probably that's why some AVs reported it as malware - there are lot of those out there, mostly of russian origin, packaged with InnoSetup).

On FF ESR31 with VDH 4.9.24 the same URLs were downloaded without problem in MP4 format (and no converter).

mig, care to elaborate this difference in behaviour?

P.S. I'd rate the old v4 with 5 stars.

First link: downloads ok on both VDH5.1.2 (ADP and non-ADP variants) and VDH 4.9.24
Second link: download ok on VDH5.1.2 (ADP only), generates an empty file on VDH 4.9.24/Fx33

The converter in Windows version is based on the latest Libav 11.3. It cannot be less outdated.

The false positive on the converter has been fixed by avast less than 24 hours after being reported. And no, this was not due to the InnoSetup packaging, but the Libav executable:

So basically, everything you wrote is your review is just wrong. What's the problem here ?

Feel free to continue the discussion on the support forum if you want and can sustain your statements.

I overall think its a great tool and i havent had any problems with having to convert anything and it's mostly been working how it always has, so this is a pretty good tool for the average user.

i was having issues with bulk downloads, but they seem to work if you select from inside playlists (next to video 1, for example) instead of clicking in the area above that and dragging down.

Everything else is working how i expect it to, so im very happy, also with the quick and prompt advice from the developer.

Humm, bulk downloads are supposed to work. Can you share details in the support forum ?

Watermarks Rated 3 out of 5 stars

And what about the watermarks? Or the pay requests?

This user has a previous review of this add-on.

Watermark and donation encouragements is the way VDH has been funded since 2008. Where you have to worry is when software "looks" totally free. Since their developers need to eat, they sell your information. We don't.

Such a shame Rated 1 out of 5 stars

This has gone from the best video downloader for Firefox to one of the worst. It used to be simple and intuitive, now that's changed, and there's a popup asking to install a converter if you want to download in high quality. The developer insists you don't need to install it, so... why have it? Other apps don't require it, the previous version didn't need it, just let us download in the native format "as default". If you do install the converter (against the warnings of antivirus software!) you get an ugly QR code water mark on all your videos.
The reason V-DH used to be so good, was that it just worked, every time, and now it doesn't. So unfortunately like so many other users I'll be uninstalling, and moving to one of the many alternatives.
This is a great case study for students on what not to do as a developer, and looking at some of the replies on the support forum, how not to treat your users. Such a shame.

Bad new update Rated 3 out of 5 stars

This last update is bad, so bad; you can't even download any videos, even from youtube!
No, instead, it asks you to download a stupid converter that I never needed and that I won't be downloading anyway. The Download Helper add-on, when you'll use it, will ask you to choose in which definition you want to download it; but instead of giving you the regular ones, it forces you to take ones like 1920p instead of 1080p and 640 instead of 480, which requieres a converter. It used to give you the choice between regular and those "new" definition (The regular didn't need a conversion, which was nice) . But now, with this last update, you can't! It won't download it until you take the converter.
To summarise, it's useless. Unless if you love having the new icon that takes about 50% more space than it should.. I hope this will get fixed quickly because right now, it's nothing more than a "go download something else" add-on, which is a shame considering how much it used to be useful and easy to use :( ...

I don't recommend it, until there's a new version to come out.
Thanks for reading, and I really hope this software will be useful again in a new GOOD update.
PS: I may have made few mistake because English isn't my native language. My apologies if I did so.

Thanks for reading and have a wonderful day!

Edit (04/17/2015): In fact, it works for few videos (So yes, it's right, you still can download some videos from youtube, my mistake. But many other (Even if they don't have copyrights) don't, and can't be downloaded via this new download helper.
Still thanks for your answer tho'.

No. Whatever you can download from youtube as a single file, you DO NOT NEED a converter. Converter is only for variants that comes from YouTube (and not from us) as separate audio/video.
For other sites, you do not need the converter unless you want to convert the downloaded video !

went back to 4.9.24 Rated 1 out of 5 stars

sorry went back to 4.9.24 as 5.1.2 no longer supports downthemall.

Rated 2 out of 5 stars

Pretty much useless with the recent update, FlashGot got me covered thou.
I can't even download a single video from YouTube without the proprietary converter what the actual f***? I don't need you to mux videos for me thank you very much.

You only need the converter (not proprietary but open source) for variants you could not download with VDH4. All you could download with VDH4 is still downloadable without the converter !

Works just fine Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I don't know why the past reviewers have been complaining, because the new version 5.1.2 works just as good as always for me. I've been able to download every single streamed content I want, just as well as before. In fact, this is the second best add-on for Firefox I've ever used, after AdBlock Plus. Been looking to donate to this, but can't find a button for that :(
Only thing I miss is an option to change the interface language.

Non Adaptive formats not shown on YouTube! Rated 4 out of 5 stars

V. 5.1.2 : Youtube : Although I pushed the adaptive formats right down to the bottom of the preferred formats list, the downloading list shows ONLY adaptive formats. Verified this on many videos. I know that non-adaptive formats are available for all those videos, because I can list them and download them using youtube-dl.exe!

I am very disappointed with this latest incarnation of a once wonderful utility.

This seems to be an intermittent problem; it is working fine at this moment. I'll post back when I have more info. Meanwhile, I'm upping the rating to '4' :)

Can you share some of the youtube URLs in the support forum ?

The latest Video DownloadHelper Rated 1 out of 5 stars

This version is pretty poor. The dependence on yet another third party bit of software (this one commercial) to do what used to just work is painful. If I want a conversion, I'll do it myself.

Too bad. Only minimally usable.

The open source third-party dependence to perform operations that a browser add-on cannot do has been the same since 2008 !

The last version sucks.

Useless Rated 1 out of 5 stars

The new version of Video DownloadHelper is useless, I'll miss the old addon. Time to switch on another one. Farewell old friend.
