Very useful addon, minimizes routine work Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Very useful addon. I have been using it for a couple of years. It helps me to add greeting with first name (e.g. Hi %from(firstname)%) when replying to mails which avoids name misspell. I am also using it to configure the body with a font of my interest.

Thanks for the good support.

It would be useful to have a support to fetch nickname from the local address book such as %from(nickname)% but I hope it is not that easy to provide.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (0.9.1).

thanks for your review

thanks for your review.
It's not easy to fetch the Datas from local address book his content is stored in binary files and such files you can't read with javascript and SmartTemplate4 is javascript only.
Maybe we will find an solution in the future but without any guarantee

Allows me to use Linux at the office! Rated 5 out of 5 stars

This is simply the best extension if you want to continue to use Linux at the office. Most businesses seem to have custom email stationery set up in Outlook and Thunderbird just isn't well equipped for it when run through Linux. SmartTemplate4 means that I can 'use' Calibri and other fonts when sending emails out so that I am inline with the company email style guide.

I have one little bugbear since upgrading to TB 13: It seems to append an extra newline to the beginning of emails above my template. I use the templates as the body of my emails as I need to be inside the template to use the custom styles that my company requires. Is there an obvious configuration option that I can tick somewhere?

EDIT: Marky - amazing! Thanks so much, that has just made my day!

Wonderful. Note : a little bug with [[..]] Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Excellent add-on. I love it !

Just a little bug to work on. Here it is :
- An optional script (with square brackets) isn't understood when written with indented lines.
- Example:
This works :
[[<tr><td>Copy</td><td align="center">:</td><td>%cc%</td></tr>]]
But this doesn't work :
<td align="center">

I think that you exit the procedure in a premature way by encounting an "end of line" (EOL) although ONLY the detection of a "]]" should induce the exit of the optional phrase regardless the number of coded lines.

A little bug which is certainly very easy to correct.

thanks for your review

thank you for your review.
We are happy that you enjoy our work and our addon!

What you mentioned isn't an BUG, the expression inner [[...]] works only if all content is in the same line (result by design)!
You can make an Feature Request on our support page and maybe we will change this behaviour in the future

BTW: i'm really long the developer of ST4 and i don't have see such formatting before

5* now as the 2 bugs have been fixed in 0.9.2-pre51 Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Thanks for making Thunderbird as flexible as KMail ;)

What doesn't work for me:
1. Choosing "Start my reply below the quote" in account settings places
the SmartTemplate4 text at the end of the message.
2. Choosing "Start my reply above the quote" leaves 2 lines of space
between the SmartTemplate4 text and the quoted message.

I'd gladly give a 5 star review if those things would work (either I'm
doing something wrong or it's due to bugs).

Much thanks.

Working Hard on Bugs..

Thanks for the four stars; indeed we have a new development team and we are fixing (and tracking) a lot of bugs on bugzilla:

1. this is [Bug 25099], you can find a fixed version here (0.9.2 prerelease 42):

2. This is [Bug 25103], with the prerelease from above you can set it but we haven't written a global settings page yet.

There is a new setting in about:config

which is currently boolean (true / false). We might change this to be a numeral instead so you can choose to insert 0,1,2 or more <BR> at the top. Default is false and this completely removes all line breaks on the top.

excellent addon, easy to use even I know only a little about html, exatly what I need. There are some little problems with the new version, maybe it's just me. After automatically updated to the latest version, my old templates are gone and I had to write them again.......and for the forward quote, the original quote can't be completely hidden, you can still see "original message" behind your own made quote. If you can remove that too, it'll be great. But I'm happy with this addon, so 5 stars.

edit: Thanks for the answer, did what you asked for, please check bug ID 25089, error console descriptions are within.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (0.9.1).

thanks for *****!

First of all thanks for the great review - however when updating, Thunderbird should have prompted you with a conversion window:

this would have made sure to migrate all your old settings. As regards the other problem, could you please raise a bug with a little more details here:

I would be very interested whether you get any warnings or error messages in tools > error console when opening the message composer window.

Thanks, but... Rated 4 out of 5 stars

The new version fixes the compatibility with TB13, but the unexpected signature behaviour I reported in the pre118 version is still here.
Whenever there is some text in the signature textbox in the account parameters, the signature is added in replies and forwards.
That's even if you chose not to add signature in replies and/or if you checked the "add signature from file" box (which is supposed to disable the signature you typed in the dedicated textbox).

Please have a look at it and propose a workaround, it's quite annoying to have to delete my signature each time I answer an email...

Anyway thanks for the time you spent making it work again ;-)

Edit : Thanks for your answer ! I'm not angry at all, I'm actually very thankful for your hard work. I just wanted to report that this bug is still here, but it's no major issue, it's just annoying ;-)

work in progress :)

Hi, we are still hard at work to make this version work, you can expect a new version shortly. In the meantime I have also set up a new support site, and hopefully we will have bugzilla support online shortly!

pretty much working day and night on this :o)

Excellent add-on, exactly what I was looking for, inserting the e-mail ID in the reply header.
It was affected by the passage to Thunderbird 13, an e-mail to the author (with all required technical information) was answered within less than 12 hours, with a beta release that solved the problem. This is worthy of praise, appreciation and KUDOS,

new version is nearly ready

Thanks for your kind words!

I have just joined the project last weekend and I have put in a considerable amount of time to fix the problems that Tb13 compatibility has brought. We are currently in the process of finalizing and testing the changes and are hoping to submit a new version for review by the weekend.

Thanks for your patience,

Problem with Thunderbird 13.0 Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Good addon. Unfortunately suppressing of standard quote header by checking "[X] Use instead of standard quote header" stopped to work after update from Thunderbird 12.0.1 to 13.0. Currently there are both headers in the reply.

you are right

EDIT at June 8, 2012

Hello Petr,

yes you are right.

Current we work with high pressure on an fixed Version but this is little complicated, sorry for the trouble!
We hope that we can publish this fixed Version in the next few days

error at sending replies at emails with attachment Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Since today I realized that it is not possible to answer at emails with attachment. The reply-header appears for a second, than the message-window and the "to:"-line are empty.
Thank you for fixing this Problem nearly.
Good work!

Please contact me if you like to translate ST4 from en-US into your language (zh-TW) .. only if you like ;-).
I will send you the new locale en-US for translation, this we need for the next version of ST4 (new structure).
My Mail is smarttemplate4{at}gmx{dot}de or register an account on babelzilla for free and start the translation for your language.
Thank you!

Finally! Rated 5 out of 5 stars

For a long time, I've been searching for an extension that will allow me to set custom introductions in Usenet replies. SmartTemplate4 does exactly what I want, enabling me to insert any header information, and format it as desired. Now, instead of just: "On date, Author wrote", you can have it put just about anything you want. This is the first extension I've donated to. Thanks!

A fantastic add-on that does just what it should - gives the writer the chance to modify the reply header. Thanks very much too for the great templates available on your site! I've made a contribution for this great time saver.

Excellent Addon Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Was very happy with SmartTemplate and was disappointed when updating to TB9 when I found it wasn't supported. Good news about SmartTemplate4 then!!

This addon almost totally covers my need for "outlook-style" quoting at my work. The only slight issue is that the TB quote-bars remain in the message - in a long thread this can start to look ugly as my replies mix with those who are actually using Outlook.

I've ended up making a small mod to the extension to remove these bars. I'm sending the code to the developer, so maybe it'll appear as an option in a future release :-)

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (0.7.9).

thanks for your review

thanks for your review and we are glad that you find ST4 helpful.

Your whish we will not add to change/remove the quote bars will not be an job from ST4 please use e.g. ReFwdFormatter.

Here is the answer to your e mail and review from tool8:

"I understand that a majority of our users are mostly interested in removing the default reply header that TB inserts and replacing it with an MS Outlook style header. However, the greater intent of SmartTemplate4 is to be a 'template' that is 'smart'. It is content that is automatically inserted for you upon new composition of a message (new, reply, or forward). Modifying any other part of the message is outside of ST4's job scope.
My suggestion is that you would use an add-on that addressees the express purpose that you need e.g. ReFwdFormatter."

Need help Rated 5 out of 5 stars

SmartTemplate 4 is just what I was looking for. I have been using it for some time now and it has been working very well. However, recently (maybe due to a thunderbird update, but I'm not sure), I starting having trouble where if I try to reply to an email that has attachments, my reply template is NOT used, and thunderbird hangs until I kill it with task manager.

I looked for a support to ask for help, but the link to the support site did not have any place to report bugs or problems. I am hoping someone here can offer some help.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (0.7.8).

I added a support email address, thanks for pointing that out! One way to determine if ST4 is causing a problem is to disable it and restart Thunderbird.

(Almost) perfect Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Damn good work. I wish it had better support for more advanced users (complex html templates).
For now I am almost satisfied with the Stationary addon and SmartTemplate4. Both lack the functionality of each other to be really powerfull.
Keep up the good work. Maybe some day I'll finally can use complex html templates and the power of variables :)

Thanks for your review.
What do you mean with "complex" html templates?
You can work with SmartTemplate4 really comfortable and creative!

Must-have in bussiness environment Rated 5 out of 5 stars

The only reason why I moved from Seamonkey to Thunderbird is this excellent extension! I so missed this functionality in Seamonkey (Bug 218258)... Thank you very much.

Edit: bugs/suggestions reported directly to the developer.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (0.7.7).

Thank you for the feedback. I am asking everyone to send bugs or other suggestions by emailing me. I only get 1 chance to respond to reviews and that is rarely enough to fix a problem. I would like to help with your concerns but I will need much more information and the review system doesn't allow us to dialog back and forth.

Must-have Extension at Work Rated 5 out of 5 stars

This is an awesome extension for Thunderbird. It's a must-have if you use Thunderbird at work and you want your replies to look just like Outlook's reply format.

I do have one issue, however, with version 0.7.7. When I reply to a message, it adds a couple of blank lines above my reply. Worse yet, when I manually delete those blank lines, it removes the formatting from the first line of my reply text. For example, I have the first line of my reply text in blue, but after I delete the blank lines above it, my text turns black. I have reverted to version 0.7.6 and I don't experience the issue with the older version. (I'm running Thunderbird 7.0.1 on Linux.)

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (0.7.7).

Yes, we automatically added two lines in version 0.7.7 to help new users and simplify making a template. Several users who use smarttemplate4 in a more advanced fashion are experiencing problems with this feature. This has been removed in version 0.7.8. New users should be aware that if you need some space to type your reply in, simply add some line-breaks to the top of your template!
