CoolPreviews

Needs lots of work… Rated 2 out of 5 stars

I wanted to like this but I don't. It is a good idea, just not implemented very well. The BIG problem is that it invades your entire browsing experience instead of sitting quietly in the background until you need it. The tail wagging the dog. First of all there's that annoying little magnifying glass that is everywhere whenever you hover over a link. Then the only choice you have if you don't want previews popping up whenever you hover over a link is ctrl-click when hovering over a link. This is a HUGE problem in OS X since ctrl-click is a built-in shortcut for bringing up the contextual menu. So whenever I use ctrl-click on a link, I get the preview popup AND if it's a link to a file, the danged file download menu automatically pops up as well, when I don't want that unless I actually click on the link, and then the contextual menu pops up as well. So I have 3 bloody dialogs open at once when I was expecting only one--the contextual menu. A lot of times I just want to copy the link or open it in another tab or download it directly with DownThemAll. VERY poor choice of a shortcut and there is no way to choose your own shortcut or any alternative ones.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (4.0).

BarTab Heavy

This works with TabMixPlus Session Manager ONLY if you have just ONE window open… Rated 3 out of 5 stars

Update:

I guess I spoke too soon. It worked when I had ONE window open but as soon as I added another window and restarted, the old behavior was back and all tabs loaded. BUT there is a happy ending to this story. I installed Session Manager which takes over TMP's session manager and now the tabs don't load at startup!

Previously:

Wow, I can't believe it. This actually works with TabMixPlus Session Manager which normally disables FF's 'Don't load tabs until selected' option at startup. Before installing this add-on, I had to wait 20-30 minutes for every tab in every window to load at FF startup thanks to TMP's insane overriding of the FF option not to load them. This fixes that problem. Thanks so much!

Tab Grenade

WARNING!!! This add-on will destroy all your tabs' history! Rated 1 out of 5 stars

This add-on is aptly named. It will destroy all your tabs' history. I absolutely can't believe it. I tried this add-on on one page of many I have open, with many tabs in the page and, when I 'restored' all the tabs, only the top page of each tab remained and all the history of every tab was gone! This is no different from bookmarking all tabs. Also, it loads every tab, taking maybe 5 minutes before I can access any tab. I have Suspend Tab set not to load a tab until I visit it but this add-on overrode it. This is horrible. I will never get those tabs' history back. Test it on a small window first if you test it at all. You've been warned.

Space Next

Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Works on FF 30.0. One thing that is annoying is there is no way to go back. This needs to be added to get 5 stars.

nextpage

Rated 1 out of 5 stars

Unfortunately does not work with FF 30.0. 'Space Next', however, does work.

Showcase

This is no replacement for Chrome's Tabs Outliner Rated 1 out of 5 stars

I was using Chrome for a while until I got tired of it opening dozens of separate processes, one for each tab. I switched back to FF and one thing I sorely missed from Chrome was their Tabs Outliner extension. It was fantastic. It had tons of options and the one I used was to display all tabs in all windows as a list of page titles with icons in a separate window. It was arranged by window with a subtree of tabs for each one. I could browse all my tabs in a couple of page downs. Nothing could be simpler or more useful for me as I have hundreds of tabs open in dozens of windows. This FF add-on is the closest thing I could find to Tabs Outliner but it is nothing like it. No option to display as list so you get a grid of thumbnails, occupying huge open spaces on the page, with the first word of the title for all hibernating tabs (I use Suspend Tabs to save on memory usage), which are the majority. So you can't tell what the thumbnails are referring to. Nothing could be more useless or occupy more page real estate. Huge disappointment. I think at the very least, the author should implement the tree list idea of Tabs Outliner as an option. That's the only way this could be salvaged.

Easy Youtube Video Downloader Express

Some caveats but overall very good add-on Rated 1 out of 5 stars

I just changed my rating and my opinion.

I enabled this add-on to download one 1080p video and after 10-15 minutes of f###ing around, I still have no video. First the damned add-on updates itself without telling me or asking my persmission. It opens a page exclaiming that it has been successfully updated. Then, after I solve a Captcha, it tells me it was wrong and I have to solve another one. I had to temporarily enable javascript 3 times with Noscript before the bloody barred circle disapperaed, and even after that the Captcha required flash to be enabled. I clicked the 'f' several times but no Captcha appeared. At this point I uninstalled the damned add-on. Ignore previous review below, or read it for clarification of just what this add-on does/did at the time.

Summary:

WARNING: For 1080p content, this add-on requires you to solve a Captcha and to enable javascript for an external website that downloads and converts 1080p content. (Less than 1080p content downloads immediately without these restrictions.)

- Inital setup was unnerving. It took several minutes for Youtube page to reload--I thought it would always be this way and was almost about to remove the add-on, but after trying it on several 1080p videos, I found that this happens only the first time you use it. I guess it is 'learning' the first time (I hope it is not adding malware in the background but Sophos didn't detect anything). Read details for more on this.

- The add-on does work well. It downloads and converts 1080p videos to MP4s and renames them to their proper title. Videos are true 1080p and download at maximum speed on my connection.

- One thing though, it makes loading of Youtube page take at least two to three times longer. I have to disable it except when there is 1080p content. It would be great if there were a hot-key to toggle it on and off. For non-1080p content, 'MP4 Downloader' add-on, and 'Download YouTube Videos as MP4' Greasemonkey script are better/faster.

Now for the details:

<span>I use the Greasemonkey script 'YouTube Download Button' to download up to 2160p! videos, however one thing I don't like about it is it does not rename the video to its proper title. Instead, it downloads it as 'videoplayback' and I have to rename it myself which is ridiculous IMO. So I was happy to find this add-on as an alternative for up to 1080p content anyway. No restart. That's always nice and should be a requirement for all new versions of add-ons IMO, but I'm sure there are technical reasons why some add-ons can't do that. So here are my impressions of this add-on. I immediately tried downloading a 1080p video. First thing I noticed is reloading the Youtube page took several minutes, where the page loaded in 30 seconds before I added this add-on! When I clicked on the 1080p link, I was assaulted with a Captcha. A very easy one with real words but I wasn't expecting one at all… Next I was told that I had to enable javascript for an external site, <a href="http://videodroid.org">videodroid.org</a>. I use NoScript for security and don't enable JS unless absolutely necessary to view a site that I trust. I know nothing about this site so I didn't trust it. I immediately scanned the site with the VirusTotal toolbar and, much to my amazement, it reported 0/52 suspects, all 'Clean site' ratings except for a few 'Unrated site' ones. OK so I think I can trust them now and I temporarily enabled their site. I solved the Captcha and had to wait while the video was downloaded and converted to mp4 format--didn't take long--and then I was able to download the 2.37 GB video with DownThemAll at maximum bandwidth for my connection, so it was fast. I tried another video, with much faster loading this time, but conversion took quite a while even though this was a much smaller video (263 MB). The download failed in DTA so I had to reload the page and try again. This time it worked. The videos are properly renamed to the page title and they are true 1080p so this aspect of the add-on makes it better than the Greasemonkey script even though it does not use an external website. </span>

<span>I still think that the author should warn that you have to solve a Captcha and that the video will be downloaded through a third-party site that requires javascript. Other than these two caveats, this is a very good add-on. BTW, other video resolutions download immediately without requiring a Captcha. I don't know if they're going through <a href="http://videodroid.org">videodroid.org</a> or not.</span>

Focus Regainer

Rated 1 out of 5 stars

I have had the Flash-cursor-hijacking-problem for years so I had great expectations for this add-on. Unfortunately it does not work at all with Ustream flash videos--the main reason I sought out an add-on like this. I tried every key combination and none work. BTW it would be nice if the user could choose a new keyboard shortcut--this add-on does not show up in Keyconfig. OK, it does work with Youtube flash but I always download Youtube videos since flash players, in general, really really suck. The only reason I don't download Ustream content is because it is live and I can't. Very disappointed…

FF 29.0.1 on OS X 10.8.5

MP4 YouTube Downloader

Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Wow, just what I have been looking for. No other Youtube downloader can allow you to download from embedded videos on other sites without going to Youtube first. This one can! It even has a setting to find HD videos if available. Kudos!

DejaClick

Rated 1 out of 5 stars

DO NOT INSTALL THIS ON FF 29.0.1!!!

This add-on should be banned until author updates it for FF 29.0.1.

Installed, restarted, got:

Exception encountered in DejaOverlay.init()
nextwin.DejaClick is undefined (TypeError) (360)

Popup was unclosable. Had to force quit FF. Had to start FF in safe mode to remove it. Had to restore session manually. I have never had this happen when installing any add-on.

You've been warned.

iMacros for Firefox

Rated 1 out of 5 stars

It sounds great. It isn't. Not only does the recorded macro not work at all, but every time you click Record, it asks you if you want to close all tabs! What!!!??? I can't imagine any situation where you would want ANY add-on to close all your tabs so it can work better. You could easily just hit enter and lose all your tabs as the default is Yes. Unbelievable.

Picture Zoom Plus(+)

It works but… Rated 2 out of 5 stars

OK this does work but it gets in the way of normal viewing. It imposes an annoying magnifying glass whenever the cursor hovers over a link or image. Recently, an enlarged image just sat there on top of the page, blocking all underneath it, on every tab of the window. It was impossible to get rid of so I had to restart FF with many open windows and tabs--the last thing I need to do because it takes so long…

Classic Theme Restorer (Customize Australis)

Works great but why is there a need for this add-on?! Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I immediately got this add-on when I learned, to my horror, that FF had updated itself without my permission and all my hundreds of tabs in dozens of windows were gone. FF devs have gone too far this time. I no longer respect them. Thanks for this interim work-around-not-solution.

Search Tab

Rated 3 out of 5 stars

It searches page titles only of pages within the window. Not very useful to me. I can faster click the pull-down list from TabMix Plus. No typing. I thought it searched tabs in all open windows. That would be more useful.

Youtube Video and Audio Downloader

Rated 3 out of 5 stars

I see a lot of work went into this. It can do a lot of things, including separating/combining audio and video components. The drop-down menu has a lot of choices--too many. And they are divided into pages instead of being presented in one long list--way too annoying and slow. All I want to do is download the original quality of the video and I have to wade through 4 pages to find it. Why isn't it at the top of the list on the first page? Another thing, the highest quality video was available as 'video only' and the add-on can download the audio from another available file and combine it using ffmpeg, which is all fine except that I have no way of pointing the add-on to my installed ffmpeg because apparently Firefox doesn't allow access to /usr/local/Cellar/ffmpeg/2.1.3/bin/ffmpeg, which is the Homebrew version I installed. I won't bother downloading another version and keep it somewhere else as this could easily cause conflicts. So this feature is useless to me. About the only advantage that this add-on has over greasemonkey script 'YouTube Download Button' is that it renames the file for your (sort of--it adds stuff like '-DASH' to the end of the file name). It's too bad because I really hoped that this would work better.

Download YouTube Videos as MP4

Rated 2 out of 5 stars

This is identical to the Greasemonkey script of the same name. Needs update.

This only gives me a choice of up to 720p, even when there is 2160p available, which BTW 'YouTube Download Button' handles no problem. The only thing I like about this script is, it names the file from the page title, which YDB does not. Another thing that is annoying is, when I click the drop-down button, the keyboard does not work to select the link I want. Other downloaders allow keyboard interaction.

AutoPager

Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Updated review:

Since writing this review, I have discovered that removing all the sites in the 'Manage Setting' dialog fixed all problems. Now it works as before. The Site Wizard is still just as hard to use as ever but fortunately the add-on usually discovers rules on its own.

One more note. I copied my default profile to a new profile and that again broke this add-on. I could not remove the sites from the manager so I uninstalled/reinstalled the add-on. I had difficulty uninstalling it though. When I reinstalled it, the sites were still there and I could not remove them. So I deleted autopager@mozilla.org.xpi from the extensions directory and the autopager directory from the profile directory and reinstalled and now everything is fine. There really should be a way to uninstall everything directly from the add-on.

Previous review (2 stars):

Nice WHEN it works automatically, about maybe 5-10% of sites, BUT if you have to use the Site Wizard to discover rules, forget it. You have to be the author to understand how to use it. I just spent over an hour on a site that had a Next button. There were about 10 different choices in the wizard and I had to try each one before I guessed the right one. After finally getting it to work, I clicked another link on the site and it no longer worked. After using the wizard and failing, now it doesn't work on the original page. So the wizard is all but impossible to use and it only works on one particular page, not the entire site. Ridiculous. When I switched to Lite mode, it opened 10 new identical tabs that had useless information about Lite mode. I don't have the time to fuss with such a complicated add-on. Please simplify the 'discovery' process.
