Dear developer, when are you reviving this useful extension for new versions of Thunderbird?

the best addon where was ever in thunderbird, it should be updated !
thank you for this nice addon !

The original "Contacts Sidebar" does not work anymore on TB 52. There is a new similar addon called "Custom Address Sidebar" with the same functions!

for thunderbird52 and linux, remove the old extension of contact sidebar and go to add-ons manager window.
Now drag-drop contactssidebar-1.7.1.zip file to this window and appears the option to install the new extension.

Un grand merci à Stéphane qui a donné une solution (ci-dessous le 1 septembre). J'étais resté sur la version de Thunderbird 51 pour continuer à utiliser Contacts Sidebar. J'ai ENFIN pu passer à la dernière version 56
Merci

Stephane I just read I could download contatcssidebar-1.7.1.zip. I've done it.
But how should I install it? It's not an add-on for Thunderbird. I've still got:
XML-parse error: undefined entity
Location: chrome://contactssidebar content/contactsPanel
xul nr 250 col. 9
<label value="&searchInput.label;">
Please note I'm not a Win user, I'm an Ubuntu Linux user. But I don't there's much difference. Pls advise how to install everything in the zip-file.

Love the add-on, have been using it for years. And I'm very sorry it's not being taken care of. Can maybe some coder buy it from the owner. Love live my hopes for an updated version.

There is a solution to use it after Thunderbird 52:
follow this http://www.mozbrowser.nl/forum/viewtopic.php?t=23983
or download it here: http://www.meteo.be/resources/misc/contactSideBar/contactssidebar-1.7.1.zip

In reply to gmeades's post, the reason we need a contacts sidebar is that it is stupid to have to create a dummy email simply in order to be able to look up someone's telephone number, or postal address, or to see the notes in their contact record. The logical place for a contact sidebar that contains all of the above information is to the left of the inbox, not within an email, and that's why the Contacts sidebar transformed Thunderbird from a decent but flawed email client into an excellent one. Why Thunderbird's developers haven't made this functionality available in the core product is beyond my understanding. I hope the developer of the add-on makes it work with TB 52 soon, as I am greatly missing having it's functionality.

I have no idea why anyone would want to go through the time and trouble to create this, as Thunderbird has always had a Contacts Sidebar built into it.

In any new email window, just press the F9 key and the address book sidebar appears... This has been a feature of Thunderbird like.... forever....

Press "Write" to bring up a new email window, press F9, and the Contacts sidebar appears. You can right click on an item in the sidebar and a context menu will come up showing you different options that are available, like "create a new address book" or "add contact", etc.

This is not to rate the original developer's work (he seems long gone :-( ) but Sparky's effort to bring this invaluable add-on forward to newer versions of TB!
The revised add-on works flawlessly under 38.3. That is one fine job you did here! One can find the download here: http://sparkyio.com/cs/

I'm new to Thunderbird (days old) and why are all the extensions here SO OLD? I'm concerned about security. Maybe Thunderbird is an obsolete client?
