Geiriadur Cymraeg

Welsh MySpell Dictionary - The word-list was created as part of the Cysill software, developed by Canolfan Bedwyr, University of Wales, Bangor.

The Mozilla addon is a separate piece of work simply to connect the dictionary to Mozilla products.

WHOIS

Doesn't work in FF6 Bewertet mit 1 von 5 Sternen

Like the last couple of reviewers, I found that this broke a few things in FF6. Specifically:
- I couldn't find the advertised WHOIS button next to the address bar
- Some icons relating to some of my other extensions have disappeared as well!
- Had problems launching the add-ons manager, and the only way I could uninstall was to launch FF in safe-mode

Seems that this used to be a great add-on in FF3, but my guess is that it hasn't been changed to integrate with the add-ons bar.

iMacros for Firefox

Good - but what's the point? Bewertet mit 3 von 5 Sternen

Honest question: What time-consuming, repetitive tasks does anyone do in web browsers?

Log into an e-mail account? Fill forms? I have specialised tools which fill forms and passwords for me, and they're much more secure than saving your details as a macro.

Open multiple tabs? But I can just the "Open all in Tabs" options from my bookmarks bar.

Some of the advertised functionality says that I can export my form data to CSV files. Okay, err... But form data is generally quite sensitive data, and I don't want such things saved in plain text.

Don't get me wrong - I do see the potential power that this tool provides, but I just don't do time-consuming repetitive stuff in Web browsers that I tend to do in spreadsheets, word-processors and other "do-something" apps.

Very eager to hear of practical examples from others, if you have any!

LastPass

Bewertet mit 4 von 5 Sternen

The best cross-platform, cross-browser, independently-accessible-from-internet-cafes password manager that I've ever found.

To be honest - it's a bit difficult to review this as an add-on. It's more of a service offered in the cloud, and the "add-on" is merely a means of accessing that service. It's possible to access the service without using the add-on too, through any browswer.

My only qualm with it, is that it occasionally corrupts a few entries in my "vault" (as LastPass refer to it), at a frequency of one website every couple of months or so. This means that I have to maintain my keepass file in synch with LastPass just for backup purposes, which is a bit of a maintenance overhead.

Still, it's well worth using, because the time it saves in logging into websites when it does work, far outweighs the few minutes of maintenance required for managing the backups.

Edit: For those who have mentioned that you like to store your passwords locally, and don't trust the cloud for managing them, I can only assume that you don't use your password manager in the way they've been designed to work! KeePass (and others) are great in what they are, but you need to have the application installed to access them (which I don't at the office and at my friend's house), and you also need to keep the encrypted file synchronized between PCs. Some might reply that they can memorize their passwords, so they don't need to access passwords at the office. But that only begs the question of why you are using password managers at all?
@Matt Sayler: In case you haven't noticed, this is a web-browser addon you're reviewing. Seems unfair to mark it down on account of you wanting a desktop-app!

Drag & DropZones

I'd love to say that I like this addon, because it's a very good idea in principle. Truth is though, it's about as useful as Internet Explorer's "accelerators". Slows me down by forcing me to use the mouse, and doesn't do anything that I can't do in half the time with shortcut keys and bookmark keywords.

Geiriadur Cymraeg - Welsh dictionary

New version pending review... Bewertet mit 4 von 5 Sternen

Unfortunately, this addon has been dead for a while. Thomas no longer seems to be keeping it up to date.

I've therefore uploaded a new addon under the ID: cy-GB-1@dictionaries.addons.mozilla.org

Please find it on the following link. It's still pending review from Mozilla, but I hope that they will be able to replace Thomas' version with this one when they get round to it.

Let me know if there are any problems (find my mail on the "meet the developer" link on the right).

Xmarks Sync

It can't end like this! Bewertet mit 5 von 5 Sternen

Such a complete product can't come to such a cruel end! It just isn't right.

I've played around with other synch tools (mainly the in-built browser ones of Opera, Chrome and Firefox), but they're not as complete. They don't give the manageability that Xmarks does, and of course they're all lacking in cross-browser synch. It's simply no good, having to export and import all the time. The death of Xmakrs means that I'm going to have to choose one browser or the other, rather than flick between them on a whim as I currently do. That's a horrible horrible prospect. :-(

Can't W3C define a new bookmarking standards as part of HTML5 or something? I'm desperate here!
